After a frustrating week at the UN General Assembly, HRH the Emir calls for armed intervention in Syria to halt conflict.

There's another major problem in Aleppo - the threats of disease as garbage trucks, save for a few brave ones, do not go in to the city to clear the rubbish any more due to the dangers and as such, the people are suffering even more.

Can I just ask how big the FSA is ? What percentage of the population ?

By one_shot• 28 Aug 2012 21:50

we hope so , but why till now the FSA didn't receive the anti-airplanes weapons even it has declared in media since 1 month back and we know that planes are causing a lot of damage to civilians and cities, plus the free army said they didn't receive any money, plus 15 days ago a toddler died of hunger in Homs, plus in Al-Za'atari camp in jordan 2 kids (months in ages) dies of bad enviroment.

.

.

these are most of the aspects that people out syria can do for harmed syrians, what i am trying to say is what a lot of syrians in & out are feeling these days.

.

.

and i want to clear a point here, they don't blame "the people " who really donated supported and felt the pain of syrians but they blame governments who try to delay it as much as it can so it will end a destroyed powerless country in the area except few arab governments.

Perhaps there's some hope with NAM with Iran commencing its 3 year presidency? Any window of opportunity should be seriously considered and proactive, committed action taken for the sake of the Syrian people. Qatar had a hand in helping to soothe ruffled feathers in Sunday's talks, hope the disagreements can be ironed out.

http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2012/8/27/business/20120827082505&sec=business

"... Iran expected to consult with countries on the sidelines of the summit on a "comprehensive package" to resolve the Syria crisis.

In a possible sign of things to come, a senior official presiding over Sunday's talks, Mohammad Mehdi Akhundzadeh, indicated discussions had thrown up disagreements but that Iran and Qatar had helped to resolve differences of opinion, Fars news agency said..."

/Btw, while NAM was set up to counter big power domination of international relations, but hope that the powers that be remember that we are not here to compete with each other to be numero uno but should collaborate for the greater good.

TFS, One Shot. She said all those things in 2009 because it suited her to do so at that time, appearing to be socially responsible First Lady and "as a human and as a mother". It's all just fluff that politicians spew to gain support. But these past 17 months have shown her true colours, as actions (or lack thereof) always speak louder than mere words.

Btw, the violence is spilling into Lebanon as well with supporters and opponents of Assad taking it out on each other in the northern city of Tripoli.

Actually I would slightly disagree. Getting UN approval is unlikely as you say as the Russians and Chinese would shoot it down. However Turkey is a NATO country and already has a US airforce base, plus flights could be run from Qatar and other European countries easily. The sir defences of Syria would be a bit more difficult to roll over than say Libya but a couple of ships bashing installations with cruise missiles would take care of that

It would be good to have a no fly zone over Syria now but that would not happen anytime soon as it really takes a long time to set up no fly zones over Syria, a sovereign country (just like in Libya). First, they have to get UN Security Council to pass a resolution or else the no fly zone could be regarded as illegal. This resolution would most likely be shot down by Russia and China (both using veto powers). Secondly, they would have to get permission to set up bases or to use bases (in neighbouring countries to Syria), coordinate supplies and start dealing with the complexity of integrating the joint multinational forces to enforce a no fly zone over Syria. In the meantime, other than moral support here for the Syrian people and the refugees from this war, I'm sure donations to Qatar Charity or Qatar Red Crescent funds for Syrian relief to provide food, medicine and other living essentials would be highly appreciated.

The pictures coming out and this is from a varied number of news providers so they cannot all be working to a western back conspiracy are awful. Kids dying on the floors of hospitals, people in pieces, women screaming for help for their kids.

So to those people who think its a conspiracy against the Syrian govt, should realise that Assad is using tanks and jets against cities and villages. Over wheeling firepower to take out some people with rifles and maybe RPGs if they are lucky.

If the FSA get air support they could do a Libya and roll the govt back. If that did happen you would also see more defections as they would know the game is up.

Following from my earlier post today before I got interrupted - the SNC representative, Mr. Louay Safi was very calm and collected in his answers and quite impressive in his ability to get his point across succinctly. He did say that the Russian claim in pushing for a negotiated settlement doesn't quite hold water as it clearly supported Assad in the UNSC and constant supply of weapons to Assad's forces also indicates otherwise. He hopes that Russia will re-calculate.

Mr. Louay also made it clear that the revolution started out as only a peaceful call for reform, not regime change. It escalated into what it is now and it is still not a level playing field.

Hope and prayers for the Syrian people, that resolution of the conflict will come swiftly, for the sake of innocent lives.

Just viewed "Inside Syria", hosted by Mike Hanna. No link as not yet on the web.

The Russian political analyst, Dimitri Babich, had some interesting points to make:-

a) Russia wrote off Syria's debt of 11 bil (USD?) 3-4 years ago. So he says that they have no $$ to gain from supporting Assad

(- but it's quite obvious that they will try to recover a part of that 11bil)

b) Opposition so fragmented that even if Assad leaves, there will be no guarantee that minority interests eg. Alawite, will be not ridden roughshod over

(-not his words, but a good point, looking at the state of disarray that the opposition is in. And having Brig Gen Manaf Tlas as unifier - will that work? Since he was a close friend of Assad and son of former Defence Munister - while strategically, he will have the relevant intangible knowledge of the situation on the ground and insider information, but what if his loyalty actually lies with Assad?)

to be honest , i don't know the future but the point i am trying to reach is that the first word the system said was a sectarian war when the revolution started in daraa only.

because his people is minority,he even enforced some alawii people to join their crimes by kidnaping their daughters for couple of days ( these stories has been recorded 1 year & 3 months back in Homs.

at the same time (fadwa soliman-actress) from the alawi people ,she joined the revolution and demonstration in Homs but sadley she disappeared and we believe that system threatened her and her family if she didn't stop.

Islamic terrorists are going to use it as their next killing ground. Pity the poor people of Syria. A people's revolution could be diverted by those who want power and to oppress people using religion as their weapon of choice. "... Saudi Arabia dropped demands in the motion calling for Assad to stand down and sanctions against his government because of opposition from countries including India, Brazil and South Africa, diplomats said."

- Even India and South Africa support BA remaining in power.

"... a proxy war, with regional and international players arming one side or the other... Now, with the situation having worsened, they must again find common ground. The immediate interests of the Syrian people must be paramount over any larger rivalries of influence."

- Hope and pray they find that common ground and fast ... before further collateral damage to innocent lives!

Al Jazeera also reported this and showed Russia's UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin blasting the resolution, saying it gave "blatant" support to Syrian rebels and that its backers were the countries providing "mercenaries and arms" to the opposition"

- Isn't this twisting things around? The opposition had no weapons to fight with in the beginning. All diplomatic motions were gone through prior to finally doing what was necessary, as the opposition had nothing much to defend themselves with.

Come to think of it, China, Russia, Catholic church and any other authoritarian regime use the same tactics to suppress any dissent but I guess it happens everywhere in the world, to a lesser or greater degree, that's all.

Update: Kofi Annan has resigned in frustration over the stalemate in the UNSC, led by Russia and China stonewalling. :0(

He'll still be around for a few weeks to try and ensure smooth handover to his successor but ...

Anyway, this report quotes Annan as saying that this time, both parties are at fault ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/blog/2012/aug/03/kofi-annan-syria-fault?newsfeed=true

:) hehehe

he is a pro-government and i challenge him to prove the opposite .

i have a lot of friends who had the same idea and when it reached alleppo city they changed their opinions because their houses bombed by the military.

we have a colleage in the company was toooooooo much progovernment then he suddenly changed .

when we asked about that we knew that his cosin was shot by sniper in damascus , and his house was stolen by the military.

these people you are talking about are very selfish and they will not care until it reaches their families or houses.

I hope what you say is true as Syria is a mess now. I'm hoping for a swift end but I don't see it, this could drag on for a long time. Speaking to a Syria I know he claimed it was all lies spread by the west, (of course it is!) and that everything is fine there.

and believe it moza what broadcasted in media is different from the videos i saw in the internet.

the ethics of a lot of the free army was as expected

the free army after they won the battle they arrange a free and safe path to the women and children to go out from the area of Barri Tribe because they expected that the regime will get crazy and bomb the area by jet planes.

another video i saw , showing the rebels entered a house of one of these "Shabeeha" and they didn't steel anything but they start braking all the pictures of bashar asad inside the house and when they reached the bed room they found a personal picture belongs to the guy with his family and the camera man shouted "hide it , leave it "

i don't know if you are arab or not but if you are u will understand that such a behavior reflect noblesse and manners.

they found also around 130 Kg of meet and they spread it for free on the poor families in the neighborhood.

and the FSA declared that they are not against Barri tribe , they are against any one will help the government in killing people .

Actually one officer from barri separated from the rejime before yesterday.

Moza ,

The leaders in FSA madea statment that they are against such a behaviors not because of these criminals but because of the information they could get from them plus even criminals deserve a trial even with their ugly record of raping women and turtoring to death and terorising civlians

One Shot, although I support the revolution against the dictator Assad and his cronies, the FSA need to rise above tribal and ethnic rivaliries or they will lose the support of the world.

Even if these people were prisoners released by Assad they should not have executed them. Bad PR for them and the wrong thing to do.

All these crimes by them replies by the goverment by acceptance and these people u saw are responsible of death for more than 1000 syrian and indirect hurting of thousands of syrians

And a lot of peolpe in aleppo show their rejection of this kind of ecexcuting because it is a "mercy justice" as they said

By one_shot• 2 Aug 2012 03:54
one_shot

Justice reached them at last and it is not a murder these people u saw in this video 3 of them are having death panalties and bashar al-asad let them out to help him against the revolution

Al -barri tribe are known in aleppo city with their drug and weapon smugling and traficing in allepo and i still remember when one of them came to a hospital and opened fire killing one ductor and two nurses just because his cousin was shot by other tribe right next to my house

Another guy opened fire in a bus killing 36 people because he was drunk 5 years back

What happened yesterday , is that free army made a truss with this tribe but they broke it by killing housam dienn arsmanazi so the free army attached back

And even though they arranged clear and safe path to women and children

Thanks for asking so i explained

UN observer 90-day mission expired, the mandate was renewed on July 20 for 30 days and Major General Robert Mood has been replaced by Lieutenant General Babacar Gaye, who has already taken up his post in Damascus.

While some people may say that Maj.Gen. Mood did not do a good job leading the mission but this is actually a good move so that the truth from an independent monitor can be out there and no longer be suppressed while the new head of UN Observer mission can monitor afresh to report independently. He may report differently and this his should be the Syrian govt's final opportunity to manage the situation anew. However, from the reports of escalating violence by Govt forces on Aleppo, etc things are pointing in the opposite direction.

Anyway, Major General Robert Mood, the former head of the U.N. monitoring mission in Syria, said yesterday ...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/27/syria-conflict-assad-fall_n_1709194.html?utm_hp_ref=world

"In my opinion it is only a matter of time before a regime that is using such heavy military power and disproportional violence against the civilian population is going to fall ...However, the authoritarian Syrian leader is probably secure in the short term because he has the military capability to hold off the rebels and his eventual fall could be months or even years away ...

Mood, who commanded a 400-strong mission, was unable to stop the escalating violence and said organised groups with artillery, mortars and mechanized formations were responsible for some of the violence in Syrian villages."

- Not sure if this last paragraph is referring to the armed opposition. In any event, what is clear to outsiders is that the Opposition continues to be fragmented and as such, they cannot win the war unless they become united. United they will stand and divided, they will fall, to the detriment of the Syrian people.

Update: There are local Syrians who claim that there is no problem in Damascus but it's external groups who are causing the trouble. Some refugees who had crossed over the Lebanon border have this different point of view. Al Jazeera cannot verify this as their reporters are not allowed to cross the border to do so.

One shot said, "i still remember what was the purpose of the UN inspectors mission in Syria , it was to check if the regime is making crimes against the humanity ... however they agreed to go there and check by their OWN eyes. after 4 months all what they agreed on is to extend their mission 1 more month."

I think that for their own safety, they needed to say the right things to the Govt but discreetly report the truth. This would be a matter of strategy.

Currently, they are held up at their hotels due to the escalating violence, right? I recall there was one observer who earlier fled and spilled the beans on the monitoring that the Govt forces had trained on the UN observers themselves, even in the bathroom ..., on the "pretext of ensuring their safety". At that time, something is always better than nothing thus, the observers bravely continued their mission. At least with their presence there, the Govt was not totally free to act with impunity.

More effective strategies should be able to be formed with the recent defections of the Syrian Ambassadors to UAE and Cyprus and the earlier Ambassador to Iraq. Accurate intelligence of the ground situation in Syria is imperative for effective strategies to be executed.

May God be with the Syrian people.

and all the world agreed on ANNAN plan including Russia & China so what is really ANNAN plan (after modification ):

1-put internal political solutions take into consideration the fears & dreams of the " syrian people "

2-stop all the violence to protect the civilians.

3- providing supplies and helps to civilians who suffer because of this situation.

4-release all the imprisoned people who participated in demonstrations.

5- provide free movement for the media & the journalists in syria.

6- respect the rights of people to express their opinions & demonstrate .

none of the above was achieved till now.

Plus Kusovo was nearer to russian borders and they didn't care for the russian veto.

what i see is just a game to delay so maybe the revolution will stop and the only good intention from outside is from some of the arabic countries in the gulf who see the pain and they really want some real actions to stop the blood shed.

Let's be honest of what is happening:

i still remember what was the purpose of the UN inspectors mission in Syria , it was to check if the regime is making crimes against the humanity . all these videos and pictures are not enough to prove it. all the satellites which is watching syrian land 24/7 is not enough ,all these wintesses who run away from syria are not enough.

however they agreed to go there and check by their OWN eyes.

after 4 months all what they agreed on is to extend their mission 1 more month.

and everybody knows that only this system has tanks and heavy armory.

check this video today:

Don't think Annan is a "servant of Russia and Iran". He is doing his level best and so are the other UNSC members except for China and Russia who have veto power.

Been following Al Jazeera and also just read this, posted 21 hours ago:-

http://news.yahoo.com/russia-china-veto-u-n-security-council-resolution-143656228.html

"It was the third time that Russia, a key ally of the Syrian government, and China have used their veto power to block resolutions designed to pressure Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and halt the 16-month conflict that has killed thousands."

And oh boy! .. chemical weapons, too "... Rice noted that the escalating violence was sharpening concerns over Syria's undeclared stockpile of chemical weapons, believed to be the largest of its kind in the Middle East.

"As the situation deteriorates, the potential that this regime could consider using chemical weapons against its own people should be a concern for us all," she said."

Until when will the world continue to watch silently without taking any role in ending the killing of innocent souls? Isn't time for the world to intervene to stop the horrific massacres against innocent children?!

The interesting thing for me is it is favourable for Arabs and Muslims to attack America saying it is out to steal the Arab oil and kill all muslims but Russia is left completely alone. They have been figthing in Cheyna and Dagestan against the Muslim sepratists and have quite an agreesive campaign to stamp out political/terrorist Islam in their border regions. They also support Syria and block any attempts at the UN to intervene or tighten sanctions.

Where are the warriors on QL denouncing these infidels? Were are the protest in Iran against the New Great Satan?

Where are the screaming Pakistanis burning Russian flags?

2012 will be the winter of our discontent

Made glorious summer by this sun of Syria;

And all the clouds that lour'd upon our house

In the deep bosom of the ocean buried.

Our brows shall be bound with victorious wreaths;

Our bruised arms shall be hung up for monuments;

Assad will be kicked out during the Winter of 2012...

Only hoping that Iran will not get involved... this Israel is waiting for and then its going to be a slug fest and Qatar will find itself in the Eye of the Storm for no reason...

This time unlike the Iraq war Qatar will find itself in unwanted situation.

Summary of Events

 for today

Regime forces invaded the Damascus suburb of Douma with tanks and armoured units and commenced field execution of all present adult males; none were able to leave their homes to move the bodies fearing executions. Afterwards, regime forces began shelling the inhabited buildings and then raided the Hamdan hospital and executed several nurses.

Regime forces killed at least 91 today; 24 fell in the suburbs of the capital, 12 in the province of Aleppo, and ten in each of the provinces of Daraa, Idlib and Homs where the Syrian army continued to heavily bombard the residential areas.

The regime’s violations continued across the country as its forces shelled the town of Kherbet Ghazaleh, the towns of Qastoun and Hilfaya in the province of Hama, and the Damascus suburbs of Douma and Daraya. It also raided the town of Kafar Shams and the city of Daraa and torched the farms in the villages of Kinda, Rweisa, and Sweide in the province of Idlib.

Massive defections took place in the prisons of Deir Azzour and Tadmor resulting in massive clashes, while revolutionaries destroyed the officers club of Deir Azzour.

According to Syrian Oil Ministry sources, an Iranian tanker arrived in the port of Banyas two days ago with a shipment of gas.

Turkish military sources said that Turkish fighter jets carried out sweeps along the international borders after Syrian helicopters closed in. The Assad regime has shot down a Turkish reconnaissance airplane on international waters after it had allegedly violated Syrian territory. The missing pilots of the shot down plane have not been found yet.

I saw a defecting Syrian general on T.V. He was complaining that the U.S. was not giving enough help to the rebels.

o

Classic.

Americans are hated if they step in, and they are hated if they don't. The problem is not that you give people arms (killing machines are available all over the world. Africans and Carribbeans kill each other with machetes) it is the fact that they WANT to kill each other. Until people learn that ballots and jobs are the way to peace, we will see this to the end of time. The U.S. can't do anything, the EU can't do anything, the AU can't do anything, OxFam can't do anything...... God may help. Go check with Him.
