FIFA voter Ricardo Teixeira's secret account held Qatari cash

A police investigation in Brazil found evidence of payments made by Qatari construction companies into the secret bank account of a key FIFA voter.

The payments were allegedly made to Ricardo Teixeira, the disgraced former head of Brazilian football who was one of the 14 FIFA executive committee members who voted for Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup.

At the same time, Swiss police have raided the offices of a company in Zurich as part of a wider inquiry into allegations about a friendly football match that was financed by a Qatari construction firm with close links to the emir.

While the payments were not from the official Qatar 2022 bid, they raise questions about whether the companies were seeking favour from their country’s royal family by influencing voters.

Mr Teixeira’s name crops up in both inquiries.

A judge in Monaco has accessed his secret bank account in the principality and passed its transaction details to Brazilian police who were already investigating him for money laundering and tax evasion.

Brazilian prosecution sources say the account included money from Qatari companies that stood to benefit from World Cup building projects.

An Brazilian indictment against Mr Teixeira stated the account contained €30 million ($43m).

Mr Teixeira denied his vote had been influenced.

He claimed his Monaco account was set up two years after Qatar won the right to host the World Cup and contained only funds that had come from Brazil.

"I voted for Qatar, but I did not receive a penny for this," he said. (The Sunday Times)

Nothing will happen. The legal and financial implications for FIFA and Europe are too daunting

The attacks began just after Qatar was awarded rights to hold the World Cup 2022. The West has still not been able to digest this fact. Attacks continue people after people, one media followed by another, with organizations trying to out beat other organizations in tarnishing the image of Qatar. The attacks appear coordinated and timed, sending a clear message of some unhealthy plans in the minds of the West. Qatar needs to stand firm. It doing just that, and doing it quite well.
