An Italian company The Salini Impregilo Group has signed a contract to build the Al Bayt stadium in Al Khor for FIFA worldcup 2022.The 770m euro deal includes 716m for construction and over 53m for operation and maintenance.

The ‘Al Bayt’ Stadium in Al Khor will seat 70,000 football fans and is set to be one of the venues for the semi-finals, according to The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SCDL), which revealed the plans at a public briefing at Al Khor Sports Club yesterday.

Al Bayt, meaning ‘the house,’ is modeled on the Bayt Al Sha’ar, a black and white tent traditionally used by nomads around the region. For those passing through the desert, the presence of this tent symbolized hospitality. The design responds to the Qatari concept to mark the country’s cultural and historical along with highly innovative technical and engineering aspect.

The group, in joint venture with Galfar and Cimolai, beat rivals from France, Austria, India and Asia in an international competition which lasted several months before  the final choice was made. The project was awarded by Aspire Zone.

The stadium will be built on one million square meter complex which will also include a hospital, a mall, and a park. It is expected to be complete by 2018. After the World Cup, the top tier of seats will be removed and donated to developing countries lacking sports infrastructure.

The Al Bayt stadium’s exterior will be covered in black fabric, with the traditional red and white fabric on the interior, the Supreme Committee said at the time of the design launch over a year ago.

Morever, beacuse of the ongoing international criticisms about the mistreatment of the country’s laborers, the construction of Al Bayt will be done in accordance with the Workers Welfare Standards which were launched in February by the SCDL, officials said.

Salini Impregilo is also working on two other major projects in Qatar. In 2013, it announced it had won the bid for the design and build of Qatar Rail’s Red Line North metro project, worth QR8.4 billion.

comikalalee: Do you want them to carry out the construction work sitting in air conditioned offices? If they replace the workers from third world countries with "skilled" workers from their countries, deaths due to heat-stroke will multiply several times. And an issue of worker casualties for the World Cup in Qatar would then become the topic of the day and a subject of media discussions with some people in Qatar such as Wild Turkey being in the forefront of the attack. Sale of sunblock creams and lotions in Qatar would soar. Their labour force is not made of that mettle needed to do carry out such jobs in the climate of these regions. As for the quality of work you speak of, just turn your head around and all the superb construction work you see around you in Doha and other countries of the Middle East, reflect the skills of workers from third world countries and have their sweat in them. This includes the comfortable bedroom in which you enjoy your night's peaceful sleep!

Then it would cost twice as much.

they should bring their own skilled labour to show the quality. Please don't bring labour from third world countries without skills
