Negative abuse reports on Qatar

We have all been hearing about all the negative press lately about Qatar. Not many of these sources seem to take little effort to look further than their own opinions before taking a stand on the soap box.

May the first ones with no dirt on their shoes take the first step on the white carpet. Yes I have seen abuse and miss treatment of workers here in Qatar.

I see most of the abuse and miss treatment perpetrated by managers and bosses of the workers own nationalities and sometimes of other nationalities. Let’s not forget the high placement fees that bleed these poor workers.

Many companies in the GCC need to contract recruitment agencies in the workers countries to hire employees.

The parasitic practice of charging placement fees are extorted from the workers by many of these agencies in the workers home countries.

Many if not most workers from Asia are faced with this extortion. What are the authorities in these countries doing to stop this practice?

Where are all the media articles and authorities actions in these countries to fight this practice?

Please let us know when they find a Qatari taking placement fees in India, Nepal or the Philippines.

Many of the workers that I have contact with had prior worked in another gulf country.

They chose Qatar over the other gulf country because of poor conditions and abuse there.

As for workers living conditions.  People need to look further than what the first see without finding out why some living conditions are substandard. Many of these workers keep the same habits here as they do back home.

You cannot expect to keep clean living quarters when you have many people that will not clean up after their own selves, respect property and people they are co living with.

Keeping clean and cleaning up after one`s self is not rocket science. I have seen new worker accommodations turn to filth after two months of occupation by workers.

Maybe these facts are be on the scope of certain reporters’ ability to see? Or accidentally left out?

The latest figures show there is approximately 1.8 million expats now working in Qatar. The majority of these expats is able to support their family and loved ones back home as a result of working here in Qatar.

That adds up to much more people than are here working. ? It’s a hell of a lot more than the countries of some of these Qatar bashing news sources have done.

Where are the articles about this livelihood as a result of the work gained here in Qatar?

First of all I would not wait 5 months without salary before doing anything. I am sure you have a signed copy of your work contract with all conditions? If so, why do you not get your embassy involved if you feel so helpless? If you do not, who is to blame? What about the system in your country? Is that not where you have been recruited from? What are they saying or doing? If you signed a contract with your recruitment agency then they are also partly responsible. What is the stand of your government on this?

Don't try to cover up mess in this country. Labor Law implementation in this country in my opinion is very poor. In fact im one of many expats that has been abuse in the country, In fact were running 5 months not receiving our salaries, some of us went to labor for assistance. What happen they were sent home, without having a chance to find another job. Its that what you call humanity. If you want to change and clean the image of this country., they need to amend their KAFALA System.

I am encouraged by Qatari government actions and steps in the right direction. Many other countries in Middle East don't allow workers or any human rights organizations to even speak about these issues. Yes there are issues and challenges in Qatar much like anywhere in the world. But the very fact that you are allowed to speak openly about these issues without fear of retaliation speaks volumes about sincerity of Qatari government and their commitment to making Qatar as a model forward looking nation in the middle east. That is also why everyone here on this website or anywhere else can openly speak about worker issues or any other issues.

I do agree with Acadian that a big part of this problem is enormously corrupt systems in country of origin for these workers. If life was so rosy in the home countries, no one would want to come to Qatar and consequently no one would be faced with harsh working conditions. People come over here to seek better living so they can support themselves and their families better than they could in home countries. No one like to leave their loved ones and places where they grew up. Again, there is a lot more that could be done, is being done, and is needed. But one must recognize steps taken by Qatari government to resolve worker issues. Easiest thing in life is to point fingers at others. And the strange part is, most of the people who are pointing fingers at Qatar are living here and benefiting from good quality of life provided by Qatar. I think there is no bigger hypocrisy than cutting the same branch that you are sitting on.

Thank You Galinda for that enlightening response.

Isn't it hypocritical of you to say that we should stop attacking people, and then you attack people?

You are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Please point the people I am attacking

And by the way it was only YESTERDAY that we read in the Gulf Times that executives in Qatar, both Qataris and Expats, were JAILED for their part in illegal visa trading and human trafficking, so don't try to imply that the problem is just something that is happening in their home countries, and everything here is rosy and perfect.

The Qatar government is working very hard to give these workers a better life. I wish you would also try to give these workers a better life too.

So yes the Qatar Government is working very hard to clamp down on illegal visa trading and human trafficking and that’s Great. I was not talking about visas now was I? I was specifically pointing out placement fees. Why do we not see the above mentioned news in International press?
