700 million voted in THE INDIAN ELECTIONS

no offence to the-birdie but liked this so much have reposted it again...

THE INDIAN ELECTIONS-NEW YORK TIMES

Letter to NEW YORK TIMES, April 15, 2009

It is truly the greatest show on Earth, an ode to a diverse and democratic ethos, where 700 million + of humanity vote, providing their small part in directing their ancient civilization into the future. It is no less impressive when done in a neighborhood which includes de-stabilizing and violent Pakistan, China, and Burma.

Its challenges are immense, more so probably than anywhere else, particularly in development and fending off terrorism -- but considering these challenges and its neighbors, it is even more astounding that the most diverse nation on Earth, with hundreds of languages, all religions and cultures, is not only surviving, but thriving.

The nation where Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism were born, which is the second largest Muslim nation on Earth; where Christianity has existed for 2000 years; where the oldest Jewish synagogues and Jewish communities have resided since the Romans burnt their 2nd temple; where the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government in exile reside; where the Zorostrians from Persia have thrived since being thrown out of their ancient homeland; where Armenians and Syrians and many others have to come live; where the Paris-based OECD said was the largest economy on Earth 1500 of the last 2000 years, including the 2nd largest only 200 years ago; where 3 Muslim Presidents have been elected, where a Sikh is Prime Minister and the head of the ruling party a Catholic Italian woman, where the President is also a women, succeeding a Muslim President who as a rocket scientist was a hero in the nation; where a booming economy is lifting 40 million out of poverty each year and is expected to have the majority of its population in the middle class, already equal to the entire US population, by 2025; where its optimism and vibrancy is manifested in its movies, arts, economic growth, and voting, despite all the incredible challenges and hardships; where all the great powers are vying for influence, as it itself finds its place in the world.

Where all of this is happening, is India, and as greater than 1/10 of humanity gets ready to vote, it is an inspiration to all the World.

Don't get worked up by maz1's comments...

Its only 7am... she hasn't had her pills yet

In a sad way, we all should be sorry for her...

maz1....I would be careful about the type of language u r using against us Indians.....this is a public forum and all ur remarks are insulting towards all Indians.....by displaying ur rudeness....it reflects on ur culture and ideals.....so if ur nature is being rude and racist I suggest u try toning down ur comments on others nationality for the future.

in your defense u may have a problem with individuals but ur posts tend to be addressed to us all indians.

By maz1• 4 Jun 2009 07:00

and what are u indian! hahahahaha

u can take us on, pls u r an indian, u r too far to even think u can be better than us. Ur nationality gets cursed by everyone. Anyways carrying on barking.

Dude, I don't care if you're jealous that I'm going to MIT. I worked my ass of to get accepted to the University and I proved to them that I deserved to be there. So I don't care if a Random person on QL wants to make a mockery of the educational institution I will be attending.

Yes, as I said, I don't think India is better than any other country or is the best country. I love my country and yep there are a LOT of things which to be addressed. I was never critical of that. Its just the way some ppl talk about these problems. Like for example, there's a Filipino on here talking about prostitution in India. I mean WTF?

Secondly, How the hell does it matter

Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT), Pune, India ?

Good educational establishment.

The post is an excellent way of promoting all that is good about india and you should be proud of it. However, there is no shame in also admitting that the country does has some faults which need to be addressed. insulting others does not become you.

These guys just have a stereotypical image of an Indian formed in their minds. And they can never get rid of it.

They have no idea what Indians of capable of, or actually I think she probably does but she cannot face it, is jealous and cannot handle the truth, so decides to go on QL and shell out her anger.

Maybe it isn't that complicated, maybe she's just PMSing.

Once the students completely disassembled a police car and then carried it up the stairs to the very top of the building and then reassembled it there... all in one night!!! and the next day morning they set off the sirens and no one knew how the hell the car got up there!!!

From the pictures I have seen it does seem awesome.

Yea I have heard of the pranks too.

Last yr some MIT seniors went to Stanford and University of Illinois's campus in August (on the first day of college) and distributed free shirts. On the back of the shirts it said "coz everyone can't get into MIT". lol

These 3 univ's are ranked amongst the best for engineering so they keep playing pranks on each other :P

To clear myself,

I have nothing against British or American ppl,

infact most of my friends are either American or British.

Its just a couple of ppl on QL who aren't really British but declare themselves as British and have a go at other nationalities.

These ppl are actually arabs with British passports who have nothing better to do. Funny how we were discussing a thread about whether ppl here deserve their high salaries and so many ppl are like hell yea. They were posting this during office hours which means they are on QL from work, so they don't deserve shit.

You guys can say what you want about India. I'm proud of my country, I dont think its better than any other country but I take pride in where I am from. You can keep insulting me/my country on QL for as long as you want. I'm off to MIT in a cpl of months to get my degree from the best uni in the world, a place where most of you guys can only dream of going :P (coz ur dumb*****).

If you brits don't have anything to make you proud of the politics in the UK, that's not our problem

That shouldn't stop us Indians from celebrating what we thought was a historic election in India

I didn't see anyone having a problem when everyone was discussing the US elections and celebrating the Democrat's victory...

So why you so many pommies taking exception to the Indian election thread?

First and foremost, the brits haven't created a forum on here and try to advertise their country politics. There are some nice things about Qatar, yet the major downside is, or shall i say demerit (LOL) is the buds in this country. If anyone want to go to a cleaner version of india, i would recommend Doha to them, as they are all over the place. Yet, without u guys, Doha would be an amazing place. Also Uk can not be compared to Qatar or India, we are far too developed.

And so what if samya think she is cool, she has every reason too. If I were in ur shoes, I probably commit suicide by now. Bullocks@wannabe

I may be in Qatar for whatever reason, but its not because Qatar is better than India, its just that Qatar suits ME better... Besides, I don't think any country is better than the other... every place has its merits and demerits...

but from your comment, you seem to imply that people migrate to whichever country because they think its better than their country of origin...

So basically what you are saying is that you think that Qatar is better than the UK?

The same reason everyone else is here, to earn money.

Just because I am in Qatar to earn money instead of India does not make India a third world country.

There are many ppl in Qatar from the UK and USA, working their asses off to earn money, does that make the UK and USA a third world country?

Guys , whats the point in Bashing.

Verm you rock , but you have to be more gentle and polite buddy ,no need to be rude. be like an Indian.

No need to fight, peace. Those who provoked the boys are also not right. :) . India has poor people, India has poverty. Many things to be straightend. But its not far. Give it lil more time. They do bring up few 40 million out of poverty every year, which is more than the population of many countires. It takes time, its not a joke making infrastructure for 1.5 billion people, where others lack people and invite maigrants.

Please Uk, please samya. Accept those positive facts also. Those who get better and getting out of the ditch shouldnt be teased, they will get hurt for sure. dont you think they will. applause them , they will feel good.

End of the day , lets all pray and wait for a world which has no pverty, which has no poor. :) Keep smiling.

India has one of the worlds strongest economies.

The stock market has been rising (on average) for 2-3 months and it didn't bottom out (like the LSE or NYSE). This is because Foreign Institutional Investors started investing in the Indian market rather than the European or American market. This shows the amount of trust they had in our economy, the economy of a third world country right?

Not a single major Indian company has been bailed-out since the world recession began.

Yes, there is poverty in India, no once can deny it, however it is improving. But Slumdog Millionaire was just a film, if you want to see the real India, go there, visit it and then judge it.

After watching Slumdog Millionaire, what have you done about it? Given it oscars? Talk about Pinto's dress? How about you also try and help the poor in India?

India produces more Engineers and Doctors than any country in the world (I'm not sure if that's number wise or percentage wise, but still)

I'd rather live in a country with poverty than in a country where a 7 year old kid get stabbed every couple of days on the way back from school.

They'll avoid it like the plague cos they know they stank up the place... the main article on the thread itself talks about how 40 million people would be lifted out of poverty each year in India... and they just choose to ignore it...

Some people think that watching 'Slumdog Millionaire' automatically makes them an expert on poverty in India...

Its ironic that the antagonists on the thread maz1, ukengqatar and samya are all British... and its the British themselves who are responsible for setting India back by atleast 50 years in development by looting and plundering its riches...

Now it gets to them that less than a decade from now, India will be a larger economy than the UK...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/6294409.stm

UKEngQatar kept referring to this World Bank report... the nut job did not read the report properly, the report itself talks of how the conventional measure of the poverty line is not applicable to India because Indians have more purchasing power... so the figure gets revised downwards from 42% as UKEng put it to a tolerable 24%... which is actually better than many European countries...

Besides, here is the list of Least Developed Country as published by the UN... India is NOT ON IT

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Least_Developed_Countries

These are people who are stuck on an age old perception of India being a land of elephants and snake charmers... who allow themselves and their perceptions to be swayed easily by sensationalistic news article in tabloids on isolated incidents in the far corners of a country inhabited by over a billion people...

And even when facts are shown to them, they do not have the graciousness to accept their follies and apologize...

Yes, I have been rude to them, but only because that's exactly how they deserve to be treated...

u retard, I am not writing an article for the times, so i dont need to bother with my punctuation. People like u, like to think that ur an expert by expressin and criticising slang english, and dont call me darling, FRESHIE

maz1 is judging the English speaking skills of whoever it is that she is referring to by 'they'... but even in that very comment, she still couldn't manage to put together a sentence without a syntactic, semantic or spelling error... :-))

Darling... ever heard of 'punctuations'?... another 'wannabe'...

verisimi... 3 weeks and 3 days on site and you have already made enough foes to last you a life time. I have been on this site long enough to recognise trolls like you and stop kidding yourself. Like PM calls you vermin. guess that is what your are turning into.

Your reference as mine are both from the internet and stop hiding behind the screen. Wake up and look at the reality. The reality of the poverty in India, There is no doubt that India has come a long way in Economic terms but it is still behind with overcoming the poverty. That was my main point.

Where as I have no problem with India nor Indian some of best friends here in Doha are Indians, but have problem with twisted heads like you. Grow up..

Damn right im very eager to be associated with anything British... Coz I AM BRITISH!! and what hell has that got to do with anything... again if u read my post, i said im not agreeing with UKENG because i dont know enough on the subject but im talking about the way you are posting on this thread... anyways im bored from this thread now..

are the people who are so eager to write off India/Indians... I can see that you are very eager to associate yourself with anything 'British' Samya, but believe me, this is a lost cause... India is NOT a third world country... and UKEngQatar and this joker chadqa saying so are WRONG... even this study that UKengQatar refers to from the World Bank DOES NOT say India is a third world country... the study does however refer to how the coventional definition of poverty line may not be applicable to India as well as the rapid strides that it has made in fighting poverty... So in all counts, he is WRONG... this thread was supposed to be a celebration of the marvel that is Indian democracy and two people were trying to turn it in to an India bashing thread and that is just unfortunate...

THE INDIAN ELECTIONS-NEW YORK TIMES

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been harsh... maybe I have to say it several times before it gets thru your thick skull... this time, take off your yellow helmet and read five times and then think for a while and maybe you might just... GET IT

the number of people living below the poverty line is just one criteria among many to determine whether a country is third world...

No no... wait... don't post a new comment UKEngQatar... go back to the beginning, read it again...

If you still don't get it, drink a glass of milk and go to bed, and tomorrow, ask your teacher to explain it you again...

Here again incase you did not read it correctly the first time.

The World Bank estimates that 456 million Indians (42% of the total Indian population) now live under the global poverty line of $1.25 per day (PPP). This means that a third of the global poor now reside in India.

Good one verisimilitude...

If India is third world country why is the west wooing them to support them to come out of the global crisis at hand now...

Did anyone of you who look down upon India, ever thought that India has such a strong financial system that when the world collapsed it still holds on to its fort...

Indian industrial houses are already finding place in forbes 200 list... there was no bank from the west in first 3 as far as I remember in recent RI's survey.

Grow up you guys... India is going places and while you all go gaga over your status... India will just quitely surpass you...

and dont compare things in percentages... yes its true and there is nothing to hide about... but when you count them in number terms... it equals many countries put together....

Sadly the answer is No.

It could and should make a difference but nobody in the 'supposed' first world takes this serioulsy at all.

Indian elections are way down on their list of priorities, it is who they can bomb next.
