The problem is that most African leaders hardly leave power of their own free will. Therefore, since this award is for ex-premiers, the contenders are few .

In my opinion, the real beauty of this is not that he received a cash prize at all. It is that there ARE actually African countries that are governed properly and that could serve as examples for the rest of the continent. (for whatever THAT might be worth ;))

this seems more like an effort to dissuade the rampant corruption that as we know is perpetuated by a number of leaders. Mogae is set for life now. However I dont think many other leaders will be encouraged by this to change their ways, I mean what are the chances of another African leader being picked in the near future...

I think its a good idea because it encourages the "leaders" to perform.

However, does a leader actually need a prize which pays US$200,000 a year. Surely, the money would be better used by setting up a charity in his/her name in their country. Then the leader would be remembered for ever.

In all honesty though, he didn't have much competition did he ??

He deserves it. Its a great award.

But the security system is still african there. Armed robberies and house breaks are almost everyday :(

Yes and I glad at the end of the article that Chissano of Mozambique was cited....

last time i visited Moz it had a lovely buzz about the place... poor but heading in the right direction...

some nations need to be called regressive like Congo... and Mozambique is a refreshing model.

botswana is great and quite prosperous... i was camping at a game lodge there and a Botswanan family took pity on me and invited me into the villa for dinner and to watch TV.... LOL
