Alalam walaikum or Good morning?

I'm confused of how to greet Qataries, specially any muslim, which one is the most suitble greeting? Being a non-muslim Sometimes i feel Asalam walikum is some kind of a fake greeting from my side, but i wonder do they really expect that greeting from every body, or else do they upset with terms like good morning/a,noon? how do you guys feel of that?

They use it in Saudi Arabia too. The marhaba/Marhatain greetings.

I was told by a strict Wahhabi when I came some 12 years ago that that greeting, in arabic is plural, and reserved for Muslims. Salaam Aleyk (singular) peace to you is more appropriate. However in the intervening years things have become a lot more tolerant. If unsure say Salaam (peace) or Marhaba.

Salam Alaikum, good morning, marhaba... use any one u want, if u say something arabic, they would get friendly with u. Think of it this way, if an arab goes to states and says salam alaikum, how do u think people will respond? there is a chance that people might think that he's a terrorist lol, even though he said "peace be upon you" which is pretty weird lol.

There is verse in Quran, which obligates to respond on Assalam Alaikum at least the same way.

Greeting: As Salaam Alaikum - Peace be on you

Reply : Wa Alaikum As Salaam - Peace be on you too

Greeting: Sabahal Khair - Good morning

Reply : Sabahan-Noor - Very Bright Morning

You can always greet people saying Hi, Hello in case of having difficulty to pronounce arabic words.

Visit FANAR, you'll get some good info on Islam as well as on Arabic.

going by what I've been taught...salam allykum and the response is basically saying peace be upon you...and upon you too. Its the polite and acceptable greeting in Arabic. If you wish to say good morning, only to closer friends, its sabar al hair..and sabar al noor. Try not to think along english comparisons as you are speaking another language and just respect that language for itself. Good luck with the learning and apologies to anyone if I've gotten this wrong
