American teacher killed?

marycatherine
By marycatherine

Doha News has an article posted about an American teacher having been killed in Doha last week. Apparently they have contacted the American Embassy which confirmed an American was killed,

"A spokesman for the US Embassy in Qatar confirmed that a US citizen was killed in Doha last week, but said he could not provide further information.

“The embassy is in contact with the family and providing consular assistance and support,” he added."

Does anyone know what happened?

Update :

The parents of a 40-year-old American teacher who was killed in her Doha home last week will spend this Thanksgiving mourning their daughter.
The woman, who has been identified as Jennifer Browne of Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, was allegedly murdered by a security guard, the Times News reports.
Her father, Robert Brown, told the newspaper that his daughter moved to Qatar in September after attending a job fair:
She was assured Qatar was a safe country and that teachers were needed there…
“I tried to tell her no,” the heartbroken father said. “But she was looking for something to do and liked to travel.”
The investigation into Brown’s death is still ongoing, but her father added that the crime appeared to be “a random act of violence.”
And according to Brown’s employer in Qatar, a suspect has been arrested and confessed to the murder. But a hearing has not yet taken place and the Ministry of Interior has still offered no official comment.
Times News reports that Brown’s family, whose hometown was voted one of the most beautiful small towns in America this year, is waiting for her body to be released from Qatar.
She is survived by her father and mother, Mary Brown, and sisters Heather Shapiro and Trisha Snisky.

Bschus, it is not necessary, even in certain circumstances force an adult to kill if protested badly.

Knowing a few similar cases in my town recently. The major risk is for lonely staying ladies at higher risk, They needs to be exctra alert and never allows a stranger or even known guard/male maids inside the rooms, when they are alone.

Maybe, Brit. But it wasn't anyone, it was a security guard from a third-world country, which raises questions about screening methods and immigration control. In many countries police clearances and passports can be acquired fraudulently very easily. For example, I understand that it is common for underage laborers from some countries simply to travel under an older sibling's name and passport. Maybe this guy was properly vetted and screened, but we would never be told if it turned out he wasn't. After all, someone in adult life doesn't usually suddenly start raping and killing; typically there is a behavior pattern that has long been established.

QDCLover, the murder took place in her apartment in Al Sadd, she worked in Wakra.

That is the second murder in Wakra in the last few years that I know about. Wakra is the murder capital of Qatar! Or it could be the industrial area because no one cares if those people kill each other.

"better"? Rape or Robbery;-p

To be raped and murdered or robbed and murdered.... hmmmm.... which would people prefer to read?

I am not trivialising the matter.. I am just trying to show how words can lesson the actions. (If you understand my drift).

Its been interesting to see how much emphasis has been put on the money that was supposedly taken from her... In one of the articles it was stated that the money she had on her was found in his possession.

How do they know the money was even there or how much it was?

And this is not one of those cases where hiding the facts will protect anybody. I'm sure even the victim's family will not wish that anyone has to go through something like this, hence may very well not mind the details coming out.

Cracydutch: I don't either! And now it's starting to disturb me far more than before. Guess something terrible has to happen for us to realize how lax we may have been all this time, lulled as we are into that false sense of security.

The problem is that we don't know the full or even part of the story..

Xena says that she has it on good authority that it was rape.

the article in her local paper says robbery.

the police is keeping quiet..

Because its the kind of crime we may all be vulnerable to, God forbid, considering most of us stay in either flats or compounds, all manned by security guards, Maintainence guys, etc. knowing the details as to exactly what happened is essential so we all can take the required cautionary steps to prevent such horrors from reoccurring. For example how did he manage to get into her apartment? Did he have a spare key? This doesn't appear to be just a spur of the moment killing..appears very premediated.

Segmund--look at what the workers and servants did in France in 1789, Russia in 1917 and China in 1949.

By Segmund• 23 Nov 2012 08:45

It is indeed a great tragedy. I hope that her parents, and everyone else, would soon see justice done in this case. I hope the law would take no time to drop its punishment of the murderer's life:

Either heavens, by lightning, strike the murderer dead

Or earth, gape open wide and eat him quick!

Somehow I have noticed that generally peoeple tend to trust the security guards more than they can be trusted. Although, I do not intend to do any offense done to anyone on the basis of their occupation; however, it is very important to keep in mind that these security guards, drivers, servants and maids, have a greater potential to harm someone than those who are not related to us directly.

Last year, in Karachi Pakistan, a woman and her two kids were put to death after they resisted the robbery bid of a long-trusted gardener in the house.

One of my forefathers (the brother of my great grand father) was slaughtered at the age of 7 or 8, by a servant, apparently to snatch a gold chain around the child's neck.

It is a lesson for us all. Do not trust the security guards too much. If you are a woman, please do not try to be overfriendly with them. They usually take it in the wrong way, and may develop malicious intentions.

By Bachus• 23 Nov 2012 06:39
Bachus

Careful Brit--people will start posting about how she dressed and should not have been smiling, etc. Unlike the West, such things can be used in Qatar as grounds for a legitimate defense.

I just wonder if this security guard had been properly vetted. So many people here from third-world countries are here on invalid papers are papers that have been received by giving false information.

Perhaps we are trying to read too much into this..

My own perception is that she was young and friendly and in a new world. The idiot probably misinterpreted her friendliness and "assumed" too much. Then things got out of hand and ended up in the murder of the poor young woman.

All we can hope now is that she gets the justice she deserves...

What happened to her is tragic. No one who lives at the complex expected anything like this to ever happen.

This has taught us to always keep up our guard even with those we think have our best interest at heart.

We would rather not have the details of what happened out because we have our families who would worry to the point that they want us home.

It is hard for many of us who work with her to deal with what happened. Please understand that for us we will remember her as a friend and a teacher but most of all a person who's life was tragically taken. She is someone's child who isn't returning home the way she was sent to Qatar.

Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

If the newspapers cannot or will not report the true facts of crimes in Qatar, then the citizens and residents cannot take the right precautions to avoid being a victim. Complacency will set it because Qatar is a 'safe country'

It is time for Qatar to be honest about what goes on here, even if the subjects are difficult.

By Bachus• 22 Nov 2012 11:38

Terrible tragedy. I think it highlights how little some of the foreign labor force is vetted. I've met underage maids and workers who travel and work on older siblings passports; I imagine plenty of criminals are able to falsify their records too in some of these countries.

@My Sense -- I'm curious, what makes you say that? I think jumping to such conclusions can cause dangerous prejudices without fair basis...

The report doesn't indicate any suspicions so far that it was a hate crime, or that it had anything to do with nationality/race/etc. I know the press here is limited in investigative reporting so we probably will never know much more about the case than this. But still.

Frenchies--I don't think anyone is saying her life was more or less important because of her nationality. It's mentioned as a matter of course. Almost all news in Qatar notes the person's nationality, especially news about crime. If the full story is ever known, the murderer's nationality will also be given.

I agree that many crimes are purposely mislabeled or swept under the rug. Criminal prosecutions here are rare and serious prison time even rarer. Most expats are simply deported.
