Anyone pursuing Split-site/Part-time PhD

Hello,

Ramdan Kareem...

Is there anyone out there who has just completed his/her PhD or pursuing a PhD?

I am a split-site PhD student at De Montfort University, Leicester, UK. Since I am based in Doha and working full-time in Oil & Gas sector (Finance function), I chosen part-time mode where I am required to visit the university once or twice a year for a few weeks. My research focus is banking in the Arab Middle East. A major part of my research would be conducted in Qatar.

My PhD project is in its founding stage i.e. I am still reviewing the literature. The problem, being in Qatar is the availability of books and literary material. For a year I have been benefiting from the Qatar Central Bank library but that does not have all the specific research papers/books that are needed in my project. Lately, I have been getting the books and other reading stuff from the UK as and when I visit the university.

Just about my background, I received my MBA from Germany. I’m basically a banker and have worked for more than 8 years in a local commercial bank in Qatar and an investment bank in Hamburg, Germany before switching to Energy sector 2 years ago.

I would appreciate hearing form PhDs or current PhD students—learning from your experience and exchanging some ideas would be great.

Thanks,
Faisal

Hi Aysha,

Manchester Business School offers DBA through their Dubai campus. It's a distance learning programme where you will need to attend workshops/classes on the weekends. The only thing that I did not like about it is the very high tuition fee. It costs you GBP.25,000. I am not aware of any other doctoral progarmme in this region.

ABS DBA has a very good reputation as far as I know. Following link maybe of interest to you.

I am in the process of applying to some universities in the UK for admission in part-time MPhil/PhD in management. I have to admit that submitting a PhD application itslef is a 'big deal'. How is it like doing a research degree part-time? Aston Business School offers a distance learning DBA. What you guys think about it? I feel that DBA would be a lot easier than the PhD as it is more like a taught programme. But, I doubt it has the same prestige as the PhD. I have got my bachelors from Lancaster and MBA from MBS. I am trying to extend my MBA thesis for PhD.

Are there any options in Qatar or the Middle East for a part-time research degree? It's been a few months that I am here so do not know what is being offered by the universities in this region.

Great.. At least there are two people out there with common interests. While I wait to hear from Injinuity about what he is upto, I certainly disagree with Hamlet about not continuing studies; you work full-time and make money and study part-time and earn a higher degree. There is nothing to loose.

Hi,

i am just about to start my Thesis for MBA from UK too and getting research material is very difficult. Usually i buy books online and ship with Aramex's ship and shop. Just as Hamlet said, Its very tough and i do not wish to proceed any further.

I don't think you will find any, people are here for making money and not studying, I did the same thing you are doing in my master thesis and it worked great, but I will not repeat it for the Phd, guess I had enough education for this life time :D
