Australia suffering 'man drought'

An analysis of new census figures has shown that Australia is suffering from an unprecedented "man drought".

The statistics have revealed that there are almost 100,000 more females than males in Australia.

The problem is worse in the coastal cities, where women have moved seeking better jobs and lifestyles, while many men have gone overseas.

Thirty years ago Australia was with flush with men thanks to immigration policies that favoured males.

That position has been reversed because thousands of Australian men in their 20s and early 30s have gone overseas either to travel or to work.

It has caused a gender imbalance that is having far-reaching implications.

Town and country

Major cities in Australia now have concentrated groups of unattached women, along with dwindling numbers of the opposite sex.

Demographer Bernard Salt says the exodus of young men to foreign countries is leaving its mark.

"If you go into the United Arab Emirates census you'll find there is around 12,000 Australians living in Dubai, mostly male, mostly in the 25 to 34-year age group.

"Here is an example of one country that has drawn out a specific age demographic out of Australia which has contributed to the 'man drought'."

But the situation outside of the larger towns and cities is very different.

Vast numbers of women have abandoned the countryside seeking better jobs or education in metropolitan areas. They have left behind communities overloaded with younger males.

In the town of Glenden in the northern state of Queensland there is one single female for every 23 men.

Demographers have compiled a so-called "Love Map" that shows how the various clusters of unattached men and women are distributed across the Australian continent.

QT- "...but in my experience, all terrible kissers!" It's not kissing, it's called 'pashing' down under. :-) Offcourse you won't find good kissers, especially since most have 6 pints in them already when they come around to the pashing part. Ah, and no pashing is complete without a good bum grab.

Glenden is a Drive in/Drive out town, as soon as the guys in the coal mines do their shift they high tail it back to Mackay, not many mugs live in Glenden other than to stay somewhere close to the Newlands Coal mine, Hail Creek mine, I spent 12 months based there on a monday to friday job in the mines, almost went insane with boredom..and no chicks either, worth looking at, at least. NO croc's in Glenden, ie no water for them to live in...

My experience of the Australian female has not been good..

One Sheila was a extreme feminist with more hair than me and the other could drink me under the table....

Perhaps the next one will be more like Nicole Kidman... Swoooooooooooooooooooooooooon..:0)

I have first hand experience in Australian as late the begining of 2008, there are generally ladies available not in relationships, but certainly not a man drought, as the story says. My lad is 19 and is single, meets heaps of ladies his own age, but they're being particular these days, they want the guys with Money, house, and job already in place, and don't intend to work if they find themselves getting married, that is probably why there is a "Man drought", cause the girls want EASY street in the first instance, and won't be satisfied waiting for it..

Latest stats show the population as 1.1m men to 300k women!

(of course that's due to the influx of labourers but still!)

Just reached Australasia after a long flight..Always ready to make a diffrence.. Weather colder than Doha..

Funny that a place whose capital is named "Sydney" should have a male shortage..

Bit worried though. All women are called Sheila..Also, they keep harping on about some parade called a pride or something.. I'm told its a parade for the men to show themselves.. Will probably participate..

Any other ideas ??
