Beggars coming to the office

timebandit
By timebandit

Yesterday I had a woman walk into my office. She was dressed in hijab, and spoke no English. Except the words "Give me money" and "Mother sick". I gave her some money and then watched her walk into every office on my floor. She was well dressed with a quality looking bag. Now I know you don't have to be dressed in rags to be in need of money, but after she had left a couple of things crossed my mind. Had I just been scammed? Isn't health care free here? How much can she make in a day (she just left with a reasonable amount of money from my floor)?

Who else on QL has experienced this?

may still be a big problem in Abu Dhabi in offices with poor security although if you call the police they quickly disappear (not the police the beggars).

2020 Olympics...that is what I was wondering about...people can just walk into offices here? Not possible in the offices here that I have been to.

They have to pass security .

About an hour ago was waiting outside my apt for the pick up to come to pick up a few things to my new place and a Pajero pulls up and two men wearing local dress call me and start narrating that they are from Saudi, the KSA and after completing their stay while returning they broke down the gear box of their other car on Salwa road and though they got it fixed they do not have any money left for fuel....lol...It was funny to see him talk with his leg on the dashboard.... I just said 'la' and turned. And this is not the first time, happened two time earlier while waiting at traffic signal with that sword like thing near Alfardan towers when the car standing next honked and narrated the same story.

Something is not right about these incidences.

I recall a case in Saudi..

A "local" gave her number to a friend. He called and arranged to meet her at a place. He got tarted up, expensive aftershave, polished shoes, teeth brushed, hair combed, nasal hair removed etc etc.

Got to the meeting place and as soon as he met her, he was accosted by a couple of men claiming to be her brothers.

Long story short - they threatened to report him to the police unless he gave them all his money, watch, phone etc.

Came back a very unhappy man :O(

Not too long ago I was stopped by a Saudi man riding in a GMC car with his family. He claimed he was at the Veillagio cinema with his family when someone snatched his wallet in which he had the money and Master/visa cards then asked if I could give him QR.5000 to fuel up the car and buy his family some food o_O! I almost showed him the middle finger!

For my understanding, beggar is people who jobless and indeed need help and support to survive so they need to put down their honor to ask people for money. But for those who acting worthless to scam people money n come out with high end car even driver ...what the point....this sound interesting lol

TB, These type of tramps are visiting the houses and flats asking for alms. One of my friend who is living with his family is always getting cheated with such tramps. You should tell them to approach Qatar Charity. This is the modern style of begging.

I've had enough experience with these con artist scams disguised as beggars that made me resolve to hear after call the numbers mentioned by king the next time I am approached! And the straw that broke the camels back moment was the other day in Lulu's this lady, all clad in a nice clean abayah and niqab, came over, gave me salaams, sat beside my daughter and I and assuming us to be Arabs started rattling off in Arabic tales of woe I barely understood. My daughter acted as translator and as it appeared she was short of cash for medicine. So after much thought I handed her some money and she says says she actually needs 100QR which made me suspicious. I just shrugged my shoulders and said that's all I have to spare. So she walked off. And guess what? Not even a few mins later another one, similarly clad, pops up and tries the same thing!! Man, was I upset...This time I just pretended I knew no Arabic so she slunk off. I mean seriously that's so lame. Like my sister joked, bet the first one called her buddy and said "pssst..sucker over there. See what you can get" Sheeeesh!

I was hearing this news from last year and did not believe until I personally experience it. In my case I was actually rushing my way home and there this beggar approached me and asking for money with etc., reasons. I replied diplomatically and told her. "Would you like me to help you solve your problem?" "I know some Charity Center Near Madinat Khalifa and they helped a lot of in need" "if you can't go there at least show me your QID so I could help you more" She replied? a poker face and walk out! I said to myself Alas! she was a scammer!

Well, it is up to you if you're gonna give money. I remember my egyptian friend who gives money to beggars. I ask him why did he give money to the beggar, maybe its their job to ask for money. My egyptian friend told me, I give it to GOD not to the beggar. Though i have different opinion, i respect his.

They can be found everywhere...even in flats. I used to give before, once I was in a parking and a lady asked me for money. First thought came in my mind was… if they had any other option would they beg?? but I was wrong, after two day I saw her in a different mall there were few other ladies they all got in a good car with a driver.

After few days, I saw a thread on QL with the same issue... I think they don’t have any self esteem... for their extra expenses they beg. I don’t give anything now..
