Being the maid

By volleygirl5

If you had to work as a maid (or if you are one now) what sort of family would you want to work--nationality, professions, kids/no kids, etc.?

By Xena• 27 Apr 2011 12:32
Xena

and jjj75, I couldn't agree more.... espcially with the QAWS vet bill recently been more than most maids get in 10 years of working in Qatar - and that was over a span of 8months;-p

Qatar.Suger said Frenchman answer my question; who is exploiting?

Is that a rhetorical question? It's obvious to me when someone pays a servant less that it costs to kennel a cat (excellent example btw guys).

jjj75

Fubar

Quite, last time I took my cat to the vets she required treatment - 2 nights at the vet and more than 3000QAR later, felt like I had been wallet raped.

And I don't think I will be surprised to find out which nationality is the local partner - greedy and again a sense of entitlement

By fubar• 26 Apr 2011 16:06
fubar

I think it’s amusing that you have to pay the vet more to have your cat stay in a kennel for a week than what a Qatari would pay a nanny to look after their child.

I guess you reap what you sow when it comes to childcare. Everything that a parent, or nanny, does to a small child will resonate with them for the rest of their lives. And leaving a small child in the care of someone who hates their job and resents their employers… well, that’s just a recipe for disaster.

But fine if you value money over the welfare of your child.

"Why did slave labor become so entrenched in certain families here?"

Because there is an ugly sense of entitlement that has crept over this land which has led to the situation in respect to maids and many other foreign nationals being treated and kept in the most awful circumstances.

It was not always thus so. Money has brought power and also the power to corrupt

This thread has got to be a joke, right?

People seriously think it's okay to pay their maids less than 1000QR/month?

Wow, I'd never want to work for you.

All my western friends pay their maids AT LEAST 1500/month, generally more. They work only 6 days, get Friday totally off to do anything they want, and only work 8 hours a day.

Why did slave labor become so entrenched in certain families here?

It is criminal that certain people think that their culture is equal to, or better than, the western culture, when they demonstrate no concern or caring for their fellow human. They just treat them like slaves.

Disgusting.

i am just an average paid professional, and i paid my nanny $400 a month with free to use our internet. we bought her mobile phone, pay her kids tuition fees and extra monthly allowances, she can freely watch movies during non-busy hours, with free time on weekends, she keeps her passport, she eat with us during meals, and we treat her as a family member. she is happy.

My family can sleep so well at night. And this what matters most. Frenchieman is so right...

are you aware, that when in their own countries, maids are showed contracts that detail a monthly salary of more than QR2000? and that they pay money for this privilige of being given a job overseas? - money that can amount to thousands of Riyals, just to come to another country for a better life!

Are you aware, that once they are here, they are given a contract that by far understates their salaries, and don't have any option but to sign, since going back to their own country will mean they have to find another way to pay off the debt they made to get here in the first place...

Have you ever spoken to your maid and asked her what her original contract stated?

By Qatari.Suger• 26 Apr 2011 14:36
Qatari.Suger

totally seeking for problems about Qatari who just went to the Working Desk, where is providing workers with a salary mentioned in the contract and done dealing with the employee itself.

The requester can not do anything with the salary since it is came from a company and the "maid" has idea about that.

Since yesterday judging about this issue running in a cycle just to provide wrong idea and "slaving" people working here.

we all treated our maid.

She is having her own T.V at her room and satellite. Mobile phone. Friends. can freely watch movies and come with us to the cinema paying her the tickets. she keeps her passport, she eat with us during meals and come with me to the grocery to buy whatever she needs and I m paying for her and she is loved. Paying her advanced salary if she request and she doesn't have to wait till the end of the month to get paid.

BTW I work in the HR in the biggest company in Doha that I don't want to mention abd I SEE !

I agree with all Frenchiman has said, could not have put it better.

Qatari Suger, you typify all that I think is wrong with the sponsorship system and how certain (and I am not being specific) nationalities treat their domestic helpers.

This is modern day slavery, exploiting people who know no better and when they do realise what a bad deal they are getting, in terms of treatment and wages, they can do nothing about it as passports are witheld.I thought this is considered Haraam - obviously not!

BTW, I work in recruitment and US nationals(or any other western expats for that matter)DO NOT get paid more than Qataris.

My criticisms are directed towards you, not an entire nationality.

I pay my maid more than three times what you pay yours. That is why exploited maids such as yours look longingly at my maid's life and run away.

Look at you seeking for anything to blame Qatari Families.

Poor you

and I just came from Paris and it is really high I spent much more than here even the food and the water are really high. Seems you didn't go there for a while and forgot about the cost there.

what I did is writing the truth what you don't want to believe and keep your ideas and things at your mind.

I don't care to change your limited perspective.

However there are many big things such as government, low and human rights that are done dealing with this subject.

I don't know why you don't want to see them as employee and keep talking that as they are slaves and not respecting them !

and yeah you are paying your maid twice your salary I see.

By frenchieman• 25 Apr 2011 21:19

Inflation in Qatar is higher and the cost of living is comparable. What is different are the laws that allow human beings to exploit one another to a degree that is seen as criminal by much of the civilized world. I am just glad that elements of the government in their wisdom are realizing the evils of the system and are taking steps to put an end to what is tantamount to slavery and human trafficking.

But so long as you are able to sleep at night, that is what really matters.

Qatari.Suger--Just because you CAN exploit someone by taking advantage of her poverty does not mean that you SHOULD.

And I would be terrified to leave my child with someone I paid just 750 because you get what you pay for.

And my image of how poorly Qataris view and treat their maids is coming increasingly from your posts on this thread. I do hope you are the exception rather than the rule.

I wonder why r u critiquing that without knowing the facts !

you can research about the income and the outcome of each country and the salaries are given to, based on nationalities in the whole world !

Every job has its qualifications and skills. and there many countries in the world the "maid" can choose from.

Each employee is free to sign a contract and go out.

Honey the salaries are given equal much and it give much. for example it can pay rent of the house, education and health ...etc

As i studied in my business class there is a standard for each country based on its currency and economy.

So answer me .. why Americans got more than Qataris here? while we are at the same grade ??

Nothing to stereotype. Your the one who pays her maid the slave wage and brags about exploiting her. You must be very proud.

Employers are fed up of thieving, lazy, and untrained maids and the maids are sick of their arrogant, nasty and rude masters. I have seen maids who verbally, physically and sexually abusing children every where. If I would want to work as a maid I will expect my master to give due respect and take respect and I will be loyal to him/er. At the end of the day we all are servants of God and for someone at the work place whether we are black or white.

Did you know that the maids too do horrible things? its not always the employer, th employer treats the maid right, what happens? The maid either steals and runs away or hurt the innocent kids left under her supervision...... There is a case just last week in Kenya where a house boy cut a 15 year old girl, stabs the mother and steals valuable property...

Another case is my cousin whose money is stolen from a long time house boy, n its not just pennies its millions.. what do u say to that?

Khattak !

Do not speak of things you do not know about !

I have 2 maids working with me at home. As I, my friends and family do.

We help them ! give a holiday. The are having salary on time and really a good amount of bonus such as 250 extra each month above the 730 !!! with a free phone calls to their countries !

they wear whatever they like "respecting " the culture they are in. As my maid came from her country with one T shirt and pant expecting me to buy her and I did. She requested to wear the uniform and I agree that maid must wear uniforms as we all wear at work ! Do u wear jeans , shorts or t shirt at work ?

They go every week to church with their friends by my own car and driver ! they go shopping with me and I buy them whatever they want without giving any Riyal of the total 980 QR !!

The sleep at 9 pm . No work after 8:30 !

I am an employee and I would dream of a boss treating like that !

Hate to sound racist but no way I'd want to work for an Arab family after reading some of the threads on QL with people's comments when I tried to learn about finding a maid.
