Beware of airplanes in the crosswalk :unusual

Gibraltar Airport is a very unusual airport. To my knowledge, it is the only one where the runway actually intersects with a major highway. When a plane has to take off or land, traffic is shut down.

it is the civilian airport that serves the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar on the Iberian Peninsula. It is owned by the Ministry of Defence for use by the Royal Air Force as RAF Gibraltar. Civilian operators use the airport; currently the only scheduled flights operate to the United Kingdom and Spain.

That's nothing. In Doha they have pedestrians crossing the highways. Imagine!

We have kinda same situation with Peshawar Airport.... where the runway intersects with a railway track.

Gibraltar has looked at a lot of proposals to alleviate its runway problem one was a vehicle underpass but I guess it will never be sorted coz of 1/ Space restrictions. 2 Its Ministry of Defence property and 3/ The land that the airport is on, is disputed ownership with Spain as they say it used to be no-mans land and was not cited in the Treaty of Utrect which ceded the Rock to the UK in Perpetuity.

crapcircle, there are a number of airports in the U.S. that have flyovers (airplane on top of bridge, of course!). It works quite well. http://www.contech-cpi.com/bridges/products/precast/con_span/application_solutions/airport/309

Thanks Zula for the pics, I lived in Gibraltar for many years. And yes the airport is unique in many ways. The road it crosses is the only road in and off the rock to Spain, If you look at the top of the first pic, that is the frontier crossing post. The run way is extremely short and has sea at both ends.Taking off to the east is ok but take off and landing to the west is a ride and a half I can tell you, Its take off then an immediate left bank to avoid Spanish air space and the same on landing but with a hard right bank. It is classified as the third most technically difficult landing in the world by the FAA.But not only cars cross the runway but pedestrians too, and all the tourists coming in loiter on the runway taking photos of the Rock, theres a special crew to clear them all off when a plane comes in! luckily theres only about 3 or 4 day with the civilian stuff but when the forces hold exercices in the med then it can cause major tail backs.

You're about as brilliant as the guys who made this airport in the first place :D

flyover or an underpass for the aircraft, I need that smiley that counter-rotates his eyeys :D

The pilot of that Tornado in one of the pictures is obviously a dolt. He should have FLASHED HIS LIGHTS, and he would have gotten through. Live and Learn :D

Couldn't they make fly over runway or even underground tunnel for these aircraft.

in this case

gosh! hope the plane will miss us!

Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of people know that.
