Beware - Scam/fraud in Rental apartments in Qatar Living
Mate,
Just wanted to give you a heads-up about a Scam operating in Qatar Living in the Apartment Rental section. Beware and stay clear of it. Police action awaited against the scamsters. Best way to avoid as the QLiving guidelines say, always deal with local based people and never send any money by WESTERN UNION!! Anyone asking you to send money by WESTERN UNION or Moneygram is just scamming you!!
MODUS OPERANDI -
1. You receive an email from Fatima Al-Mohannadi ( [email protected]) with professional pictures of a so-called Doha Fully furnished apartment with a 3000 Riyal Rental in Umm Ghwailina. (The fully furnished rental for 3000 R itself should make you suscipicious)
2. Fatima tells you she is based in Benin on business, her lawyer from Dubai will come over during your apartment inspection visit. (Sounds like those Nigerian scamsters already!). The Benin phone number given is +229 6121 4600.
3. Fatima asks you to pay security deposit for a month (3000 Riyal) BY WESTERN UNION (!!!) to Benin before her lawyer can confirm the apartment visit and location/date. Red flags all around... Western Union? Are you kidding? Run from this sucker right away!!
4. Fatima even sends you some purported Residence ID and passport pictures to lend authenticity to this scam setup. I got hold of this mail from my friend who received this email. Attached with the post.
5. IF you make the mistake of EVEN sending 3000 Riyal like my friend has done (poor chap!! how could he?) then say bye bye to the 3000 Riyal. Fatima now starts asking (citing Qatar laws) for 2 months rental advance by WESTERN UNION (LOL again!!!). I had a big laugh seeing this email exchange with my friend. No pity for him though, why did he pay?
6. When you ask for the security deposit of 3000 R to be returned, they just scoot leaving dust in your face. There is no sign of your security deposit, that is the end of it. You have fallen for a Nigerian scam.
SO BEWARE!!! Spread the word!

I know there is no way I can be sure that you are the right person to live in the apartment. But I just had a feeling that anyone who knows what it takes to put the kind of structure down should know that maintaining a building is mandatory, so if you believe you can take good care of the apartment and handle it like yours then I will be more than happy to let you rent the house.

PLEAVE BE AWARE AND NEVER EVER TRANSFER MONEY PRIOR TO ANYONE!
So sad and disgusting, especially they do it with those people who try to get cheaper flats because they cant afford more expensive. Inshallah the police catch them soon !!!!

I think this fraudster is well back in action and I am just managed to get the hell out of this trap. Out of my curiosity, I decided to check the name of the lady and eventually landed knowing this is a scammer and that too discussed 5 years back.

Hi guys, it's an old topic but that scammer is still alive, in Malaysia. Here is the mail she sent to me after I contacted her. She sent another email with copies of passport and Qatar ID card of that Qatari woman.
"Thanks for the interest that you have shown in renting the apartment and your kind promises of taking good care of it.
I , my husband and our lawyer will be coming over to KUALA LUMPUR on Saturday 23/11/2019 by 5:00 PM for you to view the apartment and likewise sign the contract.
Due to the distance that we shall undergo from SARAWAK to KUALA LUMPUR for the visit which is quite a long distance away.
Our Lawyer wants to be extremely sure that you are ready and capable of renting the apartment before we will engage ourselves in booking our flight down to KUALA LUMPUR for the visit and signing of the contract.
So our lawyer demands that the 1 month rent + security deposit (RM 2,100 ) and the deposit is refundable after termination of your contract, if nothing is damaged in the apartment.
The Total payment should be made as a REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT via ATM DEPOSIT or DIRECT BANK transfer into our lawyer`s account as a prove of your interest in renting the apartment.

I have stupidly paid QR 1000 via Western Union as I haven't read these forums previously... my bad, I learn from my mistake.
Any advise on what I can do? I guess I cant have my money back, but any way I can report it or protect my personal information, such as email address in the future? They keep emailing me to send them more money, I received the same email about 5 times already.

Same is happening now in UAE Dubai
2 days ago saw an advt of a 1 bedroom standalone villa in Dubai Dubizzle for AED 36000 per year, fully IKEA furnished, n tel number, only email option available.
Yesterday I got a reply as below

Thanks for the email. The apartment is still available, it`s appear the same as shown on the pictures and we will only be given it out to the right individuals that will take very good care of the place and the facilities.
Well I must let you know that the apartment has a lot of facilities like laundry facilities, air condition, internet and telephone access and a covered car park and other necessary facilities.
We have really decided to give out the apartment as a result of our transfer to BENIN REPUBLIC in our place of work, I came over here with my husband and my daughter, we both bought the house when we got married.
As soon as we settle down here I had a thought of selling the house but later my husband advised against it, he said we may not be able to win the bidding next time, in other to keep our head when we return back that we have to keep the house.
I reasoned with him and accepted his advise, later we decided to have the house rented out. If you notice, you will discovered that the price we are offering is far below standard price, this is enough for you to know that we are not after the rental fee but the absolute care for our property.
We will be renting out the apartment for 3000 AED Including Utilities and a security deposit of 3000 AED, I`m pet friendly for cats and dogs so 100 AED for pet deposit.
And I need to inform you as well that money is not the major reason why we are renting this apartment out but want someone who can take care of it as if he/she owns it.
I know there is no way I can be sure that you are the right person to live in the apartment because we won't be able to meet in physical before sending you the keys and the documents to occupy the house.
But I just had a feeling that anyone who knows what it takes to put the kind of structure down should know that maintaining a building is mandatory, so if you believe you can take good care of the apartment and handle it like yours then i will be more than happy to let you rent the apartment.

Today i receive the same email.
Today I received the same mail from the same lady. I had posted in Qatar Living for want of an apartment on rent. In response to that ad, this got the same mail. The mail goes as below,
ASSALAMALIKU,
I took note of your email. This is a 100 m² apartment 2 units Bedroom apartment near shops in the heart of Doha and all amenities. As you can see on the pictures, the apartment is very clean like on the pictures.
And the apartment is already furnished but if you wish it can be emptied, it will be as you wish but the price still remains the same.
The apartment for rent is located at Suhaim Bin Hamad Street, Al Saad, Doha close to Arabica Coffee House.
The amount for the rent is 5,000 Riyal including utilities (water, electricity, heating,pool,gym,etc....) I also want to tell you that you'll have to make a 1 month rent guarantee for the apartment.
And the 1 month guarantee will be refundable if nothing is damage in the apartment after completing your contract.
And am not presently in Qatar now, am out of town on a business trip to BENIN which will take me 2 years before my return.

Dear viewers, I have been looking for apartments for 2 weeks now. All those who are ready to rent out the apartment, would be available locally. So never agree to pay money online.

I have actually encountered one like that for a 2 bedroom flat (5400 qar) in al saad when I was searching for one. He was like .. he is a doctor and he bought the apartment for his son who was at that time studying here in Doha..and that the apartment is being managed by an international real state company blah blah blah... too good to be true..

Paying someone a security deposit just for confirmation for apartment viewing, OMG, how should I rate your friend? No offence meant, but this was so stupid.

True.. Thanks for taking out time and putting this here for all people. I appreciate it. I heard of those scams in other nationals. but here in Qatar, its quite surprising for me. Anyways cheaters are cheaters they can be anywhere.
