Beware - Scam/fraud in Rental apartments in Qatar Living

Mate,

Just wanted to give you a heads-up about a Scam operating in Qatar Living in the Apartment Rental section. Beware and stay clear of it. Police action awaited against the scamsters. Best way to avoid as the QLiving guidelines say, always deal with local based people and never send any money by WESTERN UNION!! Anyone asking you to send money by WESTERN UNION or Moneygram is just scamming you!!

MODUS OPERANDI -

1. You receive an email from Fatima Al-Mohannadi ( [email protected]) with professional pictures of a so-called Doha Fully furnished apartment with a 3000 Riyal Rental in Umm Ghwailina. (The fully furnished rental for 3000 R itself should make you suscipicious)

2. Fatima tells you she is based in Benin on business, her lawyer from Dubai will come over during your apartment inspection visit. (Sounds like those Nigerian scamsters already!). The Benin phone number given is +229 6121 4600.

3. Fatima asks you to pay security deposit for a month (3000 Riyal) BY WESTERN UNION (!!!) to Benin before her lawyer can confirm the apartment visit and location/date. Red flags all around... Western Union? Are you kidding? Run from this sucker right away!!

4. Fatima even sends you some purported Residence ID and passport pictures to lend authenticity to this scam setup. I got hold of this mail from my friend who received this email. Attached with the post.

5. IF you make the mistake of EVEN sending 3000 Riyal like my friend has done (poor chap!! how could he?) then say bye bye to the 3000 Riyal. Fatima now starts asking (citing Qatar laws) for 2 months rental advance by WESTERN UNION (LOL again!!!). I had a big laugh seeing this email exchange with my friend. No pity for him though, why did he pay?

6. When you ask for the security deposit of 3000 R to be returned, they just scoot leaving dust in your face. There is no sign of your security deposit, that is the end of it. You have fallen for a Nigerian scam.

SO BEWARE!!! Spread the word!

She or He tries it again. I found an add on Olx . After co tacting him/her through the app they promised me to send an email with the details.... aaaand :

As soon as we settle down here I had a thought of selling the house but my husband advised against it, he said we may not be able to win the bidding next time, in other to keep our head when we return back so we have to keep the house.

I reasoned with him and accepted his advise, later we decided to have the house rented out. If you notice, you will discovered that the price we are offering the apartment is far below standard price, this is enough reason for you to know that we are not after the rental fee but the absolute care for our property.

We will be renting out the apartment for 3,000 QAR Including Utilities and a security deposit of 3,000 QAR ,friendly pet, cats or dogs 100 QAR for pet deposit.

And I need to inform you as well that money is not the major reason why we are renting this apartment out but want someone who can take care of it as if he/she owns it.

I know there is no way I can be sure that you are the right person to live in the apartment. But I just had a feeling that anyone who knows what it takes to put the kind of structure down should know that maintaining a building is mandatory, so if you believe you can take good care of the apartment and handle it like yours then I will be more than happy to let you rent the house.

Same thing happened with me. I found an amazing advertisement on Olx and sent a message on whatsapp on this number : +971501489078

She asked for my email and sent tbe exactly same story you mentioned below.

Same name, similar e-mail adress: [email protected]

She sent me her passport copy and qatari ID as well....

PLEAVE BE AWARE AND NEVER EVER TRANSFER MONEY PRIOR TO ANYONE!

So sad and disgusting, especially they do it with those people who try to get cheaper flats because they cant afford more expensive. Inshallah the police catch them soon !!!!

First of all Thanks a lot QL for this platform that helps the people to share their good and bad experiences which will pave a way for a lot of people to re-think before jumping into a decision.

I think this fraudster is well back in action and I am just managed to get the hell out of this trap. Out of my curiosity, I decided to check the name of the lady and eventually landed knowing this is a scammer and that too discussed 5 years back.

Anyway let me get into the point, she emailed and messaged me over the phone, I am extracting here email content below,

Seek opinions from friends/colleagues who are well aware of the procedures. Don't make any payment online until/unless you verify the identity. Hi guys, it's an old topic but that scammer is still alive, in Malaysia. Here is the mail she sent to me after I contacted her. She sent another email with copies of passport and Qatar ID card of that Qatari woman.

"Thanks for the interest that you have shown in renting the apartment and your kind promises of taking good care of it.

I , my husband and our lawyer will be coming over to KUALA LUMPUR on Saturday 23/11/2019 by 5:00 PM for you to view the apartment and likewise sign the contract.

Due to the distance that we shall undergo from SARAWAK to KUALA LUMPUR for the visit which is quite a long distance away.

Our Lawyer wants to be extremely sure that you are ready and capable of renting the apartment before we will engage ourselves in booking our flight down to KUALA LUMPUR for the visit and signing of the contract.

So our lawyer demands that the 1 month rent + security deposit (RM 2,100 ) and the deposit is refundable after termination of your contract, if nothing is damaged in the apartment.

The Total payment should be made as a REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT via ATM DEPOSIT or DIRECT BANK transfer into our lawyer`s account as a prove of your interest in renting the apartment.

Once the money is deposited , you will send a copy payment Teller to me in order to confirm to our lawyer regarding the visit and as well for the lawyer to prepare the contract on your name before proceeding further.

Immediately we receives a copy of the ATM/DEPOSIT PAYMENT Teller, We will contact you to confirm the visit appointment before we will book our flight down to KUALA LUMPUR.

But Eventually If you are not satisfied with our property (something I doubt a lot due to the condition of my apartment) we will REFUND you the deposited payment immediately before we will leave.

So there's nothing you will lose in the preparation of the transaction whether you like the apartment or on the contrary just that our want to be sure of your interest in renting the apartment before we will proceed for the visit.

During the visit and signing of the contract, below are the documents you'll provide:

They advertise a one bedroom apartment in Al Sadd for QR 3000.

I have stupidly paid QR 1000 via Western Union as I haven't read these forums previously... my bad, I learn from my mistake.

Any advise on what I can do? I guess I cant have my money back, but any way I can report it or protect my personal information, such as email address in the future? They keep emailing me to send them more money, I received the same email about 5 times already.
