Woman owes Dh201,140 in Dubai traffic fines

Dubai: A woman in Dubai has got a record number of 257 traffic fines amounting to Dh201,140 within three months.

According to police, the Bangladeshi woman got most of the fines due to speeding.

Traffic statistics revealed on Sunday by the General Directorate of Traffic at Dubai Police for the second quarter of 2012, showed that a Syrian woman was ranked second with 288 various traffic fines totalling Dh186,900, while an Egyptian motorist came in third with Dh169,420 in fines and an Indian motorist came in fourth place with Dh137,400. An Iraqi man ranked fifth on the list had fines totalling Dh135,100.

Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of General Traffic Department of Dubai Police, pointed out that the department will show leniency with offending motorists as long as they cooperate with police.

A lot of Qatar residents would break those records if traffic law enforcement was as strict as UAE here.

Having resided in the Emirates and having a couple of locals as friends, I believe it's safe to assume that Emiratis break speed restrictions and stop light more. But they generally do less driving so individual fines will probably be low, and when the fines arrive it's generally viewed as a minor nuisance and paid off quickly.

Another way of throwing money.

See last line of the article linked in the OP. 5 Emiratis between them owe half a million. OK they're not in the top 5 but no doubt working on that. :-)

No Emiratis in the top 5? (Or do they commit the offences and then be somehow purged from the statistics?)

I know what I suspect and I spent 2 years commuting on Sheikh Zayed Rd, DXB-AUH-DXB every working day. It is the Range Rover Sports and other expensive sporty cars driven by those with distinctive head-dresses who commit by far the majority of speeding offences. Not immigrants.

Source - Radio 2 Dubai News this morning - serious traffic offenders with excessive fines will be prevented from leaving the country until they at least make some arrangements for settlement. That's sensible.

67k per month

2 k per day = 4 500 dirhams speeding

thus i came to the conclusion that the woman works 2 shifts going back and forth 2 times a day under the same speed radar

:D

OK.. I'm a little confused.

Is she going to pay the fines or will she be let off - "Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of General Traffic Department of Dubai Police, pointed out that the department will show leniency with offending motorists as long as they cooperate with police."
