Christain Saint Celebrated by Muslims

It's great to see all the shops really getting behind Valentines day. Do Muslims also get into this? And are they aware of its history?

I personally refuse to sacrifice anything but the freshest virgins, but that's me. Goats and white oxen will do when in a pinch.

As for Valentines Day being commercial, wasn't it actually started by Hallmark or Hershy or something?? Or am I thinking Diamond Engagement Rings and Santa Clauses red coca-cola suit.

The Hotel and The Restaurant's owner should protest to this A Qatari scholar "Sheikh Ahmed al-Buainain " according to Gulf-Times post today, they will be losing some business if people follow what this A Qatari scholar said. Because many people already booked the table for a nice dinner on the Valentine Day nite. And some restaurant even charged for 450riyals/person for dinner set menu. And I think the owner of this Hotel or Restaurants are local person???

Prefer the term Druid personally, with a mix of Buddhism...so as memory serves correct pagans actually performed ritualistic killings....so after the wild sex can I go and kill a goat or such like, or do I have to go and find a virgin for that honour and do I have to buy her a valentines card to boot?

Valentines day is a day of showing your love for someone however I do think it has become a commercial entity more over these days.

why not just ignore the article as his strict point of view and leave it at that instead of calling names.

people who want to celebrate will do so, shops who want to publicise using valentines day will do so...its business for shops after all. people know what they are doing. people are not that stupid.

I read the article to which Gypsy refers, pretty sure Valentine wasnt based on pagan beliefs, as pagans date back far to far in the distance of British history.

As for causing teenagers to indulge in wild sex er nope!!

The whole article is generalizing all westerners to be sex mad pagans mmmm now how can I generalize the sort of person that would make such comments oh yeah IDIOT!!!

Did you all check out todays Gulf Times LOL.

"A Qatari scholar has warned Muslim youth against celebrating the Valentine Day saying that it is an un-Islamic holiday which has nothing to do the with true meaning of love.

“Under Islam, any forms of celebration of the Valentine Day are prohibited. It is a pagan holiday when the Western youth give free rein to their sexual urges and indulge in promiscuous activities,” Sheikh Ahmed al-Buainain said at the Al-Wakrah mosque in his Friday sermon.

Al-Buainain has also criticised what he called the shopping spree and propaganda which he held responsible for creating such festive atmospheres accompanying the holiday. “It is the shopping spree of the Valentine items which promotes such holidays and make it more popular among people,” he said.

Al-Buainain also warned against being deceived by such fake festivals saying that Muslims have only two festivals, namely Eid al-Fitr and the Sacrifice Eid.

“Muslim dealers should not participate in such holidays which are always rife in adultery and promiscuous acts,” he said.

The scholar said that “There is no other religion which encourages people to love and be friendly with one another like Islam. But Muslims are prohibited to share with the infidels their holidays. This holiday is only meant for promoting profanity among Muslim youth,” he added."

To celebrate our love to our husband or wife, to our mother or father, to our sister or brother, to our friends or even neighbor. Not everyday we can say how much life is more meaning because of them. Now a days people don't celebrate Valentine day as for historical value but more to celebrate our loves to loved one. And everyone should doing it.

people should respect other nation's day....not necessary celebrate it.

each religion or nation have thier own celebrating days, we can't just keep celebrating coz the other are,

imagine to have a muslim christian jewish babershop :)

or maybe celebrating the independence day for the whole nations

i see that each group, religion, nation or whatever should celebrate their own days with a full respectation for others

May Allah make it easy for us that we could get chance to increase our love with our loved ones everyday. I don't celebrate valentine because of it historical value but I feel that day my wife and I feel out of the box of marriage life and we remember all those days and times when we met before marriage and how I proposed her blah blah.

After 5 years of marriage my wife and I decided to go on a date at Salt-n-paper restaurent on last valentines day when we were in Pakistan, I borrowed the bike of my brother-in-law and left the kids at home. I stopped at the gas station to refill the fuel tank. I was unable to open the tank with the key because it was stuck. The person at gas station was observing us and he stepped forward and open the tank by himself and said to me don't get nervous (obviously he was not aware of that I'm with me wife :D).

ofcourse we can ivanhoe.to me everyday is a new blessing.masha'allah.

if people wish to believe in this day and make it special, then they should celebrate.if people wish to make everyday a valentines day then they should do it too.

all that really matters is that the special person in your life knows how much you love him/her.

neo, i know how you felt, because while i was working, there was a time in our life, subhan'allah, when i used to arrive home at 340pm and my hubby would leave at 345pm. if i was late even by a few minutes, i would miss seeing him and i would only meet him after past9pm, he would be totally poofed out. today masha'allah he has different timing, allah malik, like yours, so i know that feeling, and how much it matters to have that one special day when you specifically keep time aside to do things for your loved one and it matters so much to do it right.

time changes priorities for some, which is why i believe a bit different today. to me, i need to try to make everyday a special day, insha'allah.

Sure, Hallmark may have made it a great advertising event, but if it is one day that you do something different then it is to be cherished. I am sure that if you feel this close to your loved one then, when they are gone, will you regret not making this effort.

My point is, can we not cherish the origins of this event and for what it means. Surely this is a sign of the times when the history and meaning of the day means less than the presents we do or do not give.

I remember in Saudi I had very tough working hours though the time was 7am to 4pm but my boss used to give me critical tasks around 3:30pm with instructions that it must be ready before tomorrow 7am. My family suffered a lot and I wished that I could get one day to enjoy with my family and it rearly happened.

Some people are obsessed in their job that even tough they do have time they don't share their lives with their families.

I'm Alhamdolillah on a very good job where my total office timings are 7am to 2:30pm, 5 days a week. I pray that Allah may give me the chance to make everyday full of love for my wife and kids Aameen!

I do understand what you are saying.

what i mean is that too much of importance is given to a single day to celebrate love, whereas we must try to celebrate love everyday, of course its not always possible because everyday is not the same.the problem arises when we take everyday for granted in our busy life and wait for that special day to emphasise our emotions and once done, we just go back to the usual grind.

People fast during ramadan and then there is one day they celebrate their Eid and eat and enjoy. Similarly there are days in our lives that we focus specifically when they approach specially the wedding anniversery, birthdays, valentines day (my wife is my valentine :)), I try to pay more attention on those days because in our busy lives we don't get chance to make everyday alike. Life is variable, with pits and falls, happy and sad moments, we have 4 seasons in Pakistan, days and nights, changes add value to life.

Just my viewpoint... :)

valentine's day in most places has become a means of earning good money by playing on the emotions of young people in love. ofcourse add to this the number of people who genuinely celebrate it for the spirit of the day.

i dont celebrate it anymore, because to me now, everyday should be a valentine's day, a celebration of love and every other happy feeling.one such day doesnt hold any significance.

but to whoever celebrating it, have fun.

History is there and nobody denies that. Some people luckly or unluckly get the same day as their birthday like me. Me and my wife enjoy both days in one, She celebrates my birthday and I celebrate the valentines and we both enjoy.

I think as long as there is no perticular conflict among religions we should not discourage people to celebrate events. Atleast you get sometime to get together.

So sorry that you feel this way. Maybe Valentines day will mean something to you one day Aisha.

Shame that these things happen. Christmas, Christian festival, Halloween, not an American invention, and Valentines Day, a day for lovers. But he is a Christian Martyr from a long time before many of today's religions existed.

History.com

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

I think the valentine Day is merely commercial amongst non-Christians. No religious significance attached.

The majority of the people who celebrate valentine's day don't know anything about Saint Valentine!

It became a custom and people celebrate their love and it has nothing to do with Saint valentine anymore

Majority of them does not celebrate these kind of festivals. YOu can may be find the secular people or who those who tend to ape the westerners in all things they do, celebrate this.
