Classical musical hit wows Doha audience
DOHA: ‘Last Night of the Proms’, regarded as one of the biggest classical musical hit of the world, was staged in Doha yesterday.
The classical music concert with jazz and folklore wowed the large number of audience at the Fine Arts Theatre, American School of Doha (ASD).
The concert had something for everyone, with well-known tunes to famous dances and offering a truly terrific and rhythmic musical experience.
Friends of the American School of Doha Chamber Music Series commenced with members of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. This first concert of the musical series was directed by British conductor Richard Davis.
The orchestra presented many all time favourites including Fanfare for the Common man, a 20th-century American classical music work by composer Aaron Copland.
The piece written for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra begins with an arresting call to attention through the soaring, heroic character of its opening trumpet theme.
Salvovic dance number 8, William Tell Gallop by Gioachino Antonio Rossini and George Gershwin’s Strike up the Band, I got Rhythm and summertime too received warm appreciation from the audience.
Summertime, is a popular and much recorded jazz standard, Gershwin’s highly evocative writing brilliantly mixes elements of jazz and the song styles of blacks in the southeast United States from the early twentieth century.
Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity, Mars, the Bringer of War by Gustav Theodore Holst were two other performances at the musical concert.
“We’re extremely happy to see this musical event turn from a series of concerts to a prominent calendar event that is eagerly awaited by the residents of Doha. We firmly believe that this year’s Music Series will be just as inspiring and successful,” said Dmitri Torchinsky, Artistic Director of the Series.
This third edition of the musical festival will bring an exceptional class of classical music to Doha with six concerts running from November this year to May 2011.
The six concerts will present both existing musical talents and major new sensations from all over the world. The series also now boasts a new website with details on forthcoming concerts on www.asdchambermusic.com.
IBQ is the official sponsor of the Friends of ASD Chamber Music Series for the second year running following last season’s great success.

Smoke,
I guess not.
I did arrive here long time ago, but it doesnt mean that I spend much time here ;)
Nic, I think you've been in Qatar long enough to know you never rely on newspapers here for actual NEWS. You want to see promos of banks, cars, lulu then u look at the papers.
Smoke
Sorry, my mistake in relying on the local newspapers!
Chocoloic,
I guess I don’t rely enough on QL!
Thanks choco for the links :)
Baldrick2dogs, Going by the name of the reviewer it appears to be a Girl not a guy? Just my observation?
Nic,
You are welcome anytime for my guidance :)
Let me make something clear to you first. I dont read newspapers, I'm always online and get most of news through ILQ or QL. Having said that, i have no clue WHERE this show was advertised besides seeing it in the Events section of ILQ and i think someone had posted it here as well.
You will have to ask Balddogs where he came to know about this event and how he got his tickets
Balddogs over to you :P

Smoke,
Thank you for the guidance.
So now, that you solved my problem, could you be kind enough to share with me (as according to you, the rest of Doha already knows) where in the local public media was this event announced? (The website doesn’t count as it was made public now and if you consult it, it doesn’t even tell you when this past event will (have) occur(red).
baldrick2dogs,
Ooops here goes my praise to the reviewers. I guess they are now in the same basket as the promoters, indeed Qatar!
Well Nic, i'm sure if they had a good audience then they must have promoted the show well enough...yours is a special case if you happened to miss the promos or adverts si?
chocoholic,
in cased you didn’t get it, when I called it promotion, I was being sarcastic for the lack of promotion!
I was at this event. The guy who wrote the piece obviously was NOT! They deviated from the advertised playlist and there is no mention of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance (Land of Hope and Glory) which they played at the end and also as an encore.
Smoke,
What I am trying to convey is that I often know about the events after they occurred.
Somehow it seems that the reviews of past events reach far more audience than the announcements of future ones. This is due to the fact that those who had the chance to participate in the event volunteer to publish reviews, being more efficient and useful than the promoters/organizers.
I am not surprised any more, this is indeed Qatar!
NIC what is strange about this now? Are you saying you were not aware of this event? Or are you saying this is some sort of promotion to a event that's already done :P
Its a copy and post from the Peninsula?
But a good reveiw!
It's not a promotion, it's a review.
Sounds like a good show, thanks for posting.
with Nic 100%
I find it strange the way events are promoted in Doha.
Often the verbs appear in the past tense:
"…was staged in Doha yesterday."
