Danish products off co-op shelves

DUBAI - The Union Co-operative Society in Dubai has withdrawn all Danish products from its shelves as a mark of protest against the resurfacing of the blasphemous cartoon controversy.

Representatives of the various branches of the Union Co-operative Society in the emirate said the products had been removed from the stores last week.

Khaleej Times visited the society’s Safa Park branch where the staff said that the products had been removed until further information. The recent republication of the 2005 offensive cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by several Danish newspapers has sparked a series of protests and anger among Muslims around the world.  ‘We have been directed to remove the Danish goods, mostly consisting of dairy products from the shelves. The directive came to us last week from our higher-ups and we acted accordingly. We cannot comment much as it is an order from the office holders. But right now, there are no Danish products on the shelves in all the Union Co-operative Society branches in Dubai,’ said an official at the Safa Park branch. Staff at the Karama branch also admitted that the Danish products were off the shelves until any further information. Senior officials of the Union Co-operative Society,, however refused to comment.Sources in the Sharjah Co-operative Society said that though they have not removed the Danish goods from their shelves at the moment, fresh stocks would not be entertained

The last Doha Debates was about Islamic Extremism it can be downloaded at Dohadebates.com   what I found interesting is one of the speakers remarked as a Muslim he wished Muslims would show as much enthusiasm in protesting against the violence toward Muslims, like the Palestinian issue and the Iraqi issue, than with cartoons.  He commented it gives the world the wrong impression of Islam.  Plus, as they pointed out you can't point your finger at racism from others when newspapers in Muslims countries always make fun of other religions.  Its time for the world to unite and stop fighting.

]]UAE protests to Denmark over cartoon

(Wam)

18 March 2008

ABU DHABI - The UAE yesterday summoned Danish ambassador and lodged a protest against the Danish government’s stance on reprinting of cartoons by the Danish Press which defame Islam and personality of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Summoning non-resident Danish ambassador to UAE Hans Klingenbeg to his office, Foreign Affairs State Minister Dr Anwar Mohammed Al Gargash delivered the protest memo to him, decrying the stance of the Danish government on reprinting of the outrageous cartoons.

‘The UAE has been keen to bolster and sustain relations with many countries worldwide, including the kingdom of Denmark, indicating that the UAE respects religious freedom and tolerance among world people,’ Al Gargash said at the meeting. ‘It condemns unwise position of the Danish government for not preventing the reprinting of the cartoons, defaming Islam and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by the Danish Press’. He reiterated the stance of UAE clearly ‘on non-mixing up the Press freedom and ridiculing Islam. This will definitely cast shadow on the bilateral relations’.Al Gargash noted that the Danish government could do more to stop the deformation of Islam, which is apparently seen through the infamous Danish cartoons, adding that the UAE would remain vocal and tolerant, and build foreign relations, but would not tolerate attacks on ‘our Islamic heritage’.He added that the UAE rejects the attempt to exploit the Press freedom as a cover for defaming ‘our religion and the Prophet’.Present at the meeting was ambassador Dr Tariq Ahmed Al Haydan, Assistant Under-Secretary of the Ministry for Political Affairs.

Oh no! What will happen of the Qatar - Bahrain friendship bridge - the biggest and most expensive Danish product in the whole of Middle East. Hope they don't shelve it. I was looking forward to more frequent and cheaper Bahrain weekend trips.
