Demolition of Doha’s ‘business centre’ to start soon
By Sarmad Qazi
DOHA’S landscape will be changed forever when the delayed demolition of the capital’s ‘business centre’ located in the heart of the city begins next month.
According to Land Services officials at the Urban Planning and Development Authority (UPDA), the phased-demolition of the Mohammad bin Jassim Area, popularly known as Mushaireb, will begin in January, after the earlier date in September was missed.
The area includes the thriving shopping centre of Doha located on such legendary streets as Shara’a Kaharba, Shara’a Asmakh and Shara’a Abdulla bin Thani among many other interior roads that have housed hundreds of shops and thousands of residents.
“Work was supposed to start in 2006. But the area is so densely-populated, it’s been very difficult to execute the plan,” the UPDA official said.
Enterprises and residents in the area first received the demolition notices some two years ago, linking the move to the Doha Asian Games. However, because of the magnitude of the project and its humanitarian aspect it was delayed giving way to speculations.
According to official sources, in the first phase, demolition will begin from the Al Diwan Signals and it is expected to be completed in April 2010, when the last brick will be cleared. Between next month and 2010, more areas surrounding the Qtel-signal and Arab Bank roundabout will be demolished in phases.
Currently, the shopkeepers in the area who have not found a suitable place elsewhere, have started liquidating their stocks. These shops sell everything from electronics to textiles to hardware.
“Every one has been duly compensated by the government. Every single one,” the official said.
According to him, the demolition will lead to adding of a new chapter to the city’s history “as the land will be given to Qatar Foundation, an institution that has attracted global attention for its educational and other equally important projects.”
The changeover, according to another UPDA official, “is difficult but because it’s for the better, it is good.”
When thickly populated areas such as Al Bidda, Rumailah and Umm Gaulina were demolished to give the city a new look some four years ago, residents of these areas had to look for alternative accommodation which often proved beyond the reach of many. Following this, many expatriates had sent their families home. Many still find the rentals of the newly-built residential complexes unaffordable.
An official map, showing the phased demolition of the ‘city centre’ was not made available to Gulf Times citing ‘legal reasons’.
Thts the word used when dey need 2 bring down a place in Qatar. Seriously, is there actually any need of copying wot Dubai is doin??? I mean, doesnt anyone in Qatar hav der own ideas??? She eeah... These places were the heart and soul of Qatar and now, instead of gettin the Qatar-West bay skyline better... dey r hitting on the places much used by the middle glass & certainly upper class (I have personally seen alot of upper class people doin der round of shoppin in these very streets). Anywayz, there is no point sayin all this... it only goes 2 the deaf ears...
No one will be homeless, everybody just rent so they can move somewhere else. It's really sad (because it includes our main office to be demolished), but that's the price of progress. Urban planning is needed!

has nyone thought how many ppl are going to lose their livelihoods. ther source of income ? its not only homes , its businesses also.
QF has been given the land so that they can make commercial flats ad offices and rent them out. They have already formed a real estate company fr this purpose. they are going to rent these buildins out and the income from tht will provide funds for QF for their businesses. i thought they were non- profit, but tey form companies to make profit for themselves.
Wondering how many people will become homeless as a result of this action
I don't fetch, I BITE
any clues about the shops on Musherib Road ?
tall structures, long highways and such signifies progress of one country so as to keep up globally. It happens in other parts of the world too. So that later on, we can only see pictures of old images of these places like souqs in the museum.
...on the said area, the developments to be handled by QF.
the present 2nos underground parking being constructed
besides the DIWAN can accomodate the parking requirements.
this is part of the major lansdcape facelift along the DIWAN peripherals....which started with Souq Waqif.
As of date, as far as i can remember... major landmark brought down to ground includes HSBC Bank along corniche and the KIA car showroom, what else??
Our old office building, the one nearest DIWAN was the first to fall down, late 2005.
Oh, i just read.. you refer to the street.. *toink!*

Hey! My office is in Kahraba Street! The Musherib area is fine! What's the need to demolish the classic area? And what's with all buildings in Doha being demolished every year or so?

What will QF do with even more land. They hundreds of acres already that are untouched in Rayyan, and now people will lose their homes and businesses so that QF can get even more land?
This is all just a way to marginalize and deport Asians without forcibly removing them.
This demolition drive may be a factor for increasing the rents of commercial and residential units. Any comments.
I am residing near Arab Bank but we did not receive any notice and the authorities din't provide any Map to Gulf Times, therefore can't predict about the residential areas near Musherib Road.
Tats So Sad ...:(
Shara’a Kaharba, Shara’a Asmakh and Shara’a Abdulla bin Thani....all these areas are the main breeding n mating places for tat poor street CATS ....:(
Arab Bank R/A is just behind Souq Al Waqif, they are going to demolsh the whole old area to make it more 'older' like Souq Waqif.
The heart of the City will be given to Qatar Foundation
