Depression in the Middle East

Speedysid
By Speedysid

It has been established that depression is highly prevalent in Qatar. Quoting from one report in 2010,27% patients seek treatment for Depression and abt 3% required urgent treatment for the same. (http://www.thepeninsulaqatar.com/qatar/136239-prevalence-of-depression-a...)

Prevalence of depression in Qatar, as shown by a study is higher than the global rate (between 11-20 percent), but is lower compared to other GCC countries.(http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/qatar/depression-among-gulf-women-related-...)

Now, If we are to give reasons for the causes of depression, this post will extend into 1000 pages with all just quoting various reasons. Therefore, understanding the fact that reasons are subjective, what do you fellow QLers think is an appropriate way to tackle depression?

Also understand that QLers will answer 'professional help', but there is a strata of the society, whose medical insurance may not cover treatment of depression. There may be many who may also not be having a medical insurance! Add to that, the high costs of individual treatment may also contribute to the person getting more depressed...

We all have our forums on QL where we come and let loose our steam over fellow QLers, or some just divert their mind. But at the end of the day, we all have to sleep on the same bed, and be with our own selves. So we can't ignore this fact.

And yes, its not just Non-GCC residents who face the ire of depression. A report had stated that GCC citizens, too, are under depression for various reasons, ranging from gender bias to loneliness.

Depression, therefore, is a reality, and with us living in this mechanical world, it has become a norm. Let us hope that treatment for depression and related issues is improved not only in the GCC but throughout the world.

It would be really great if there are volunteer based Counselling centres which are professionally run. Volunteers or even paid medical interns can be assigned a few hours of duty at major hospitals, assigned to listen to people, and hear them out. If the case is too complicated, they may be referred to a professional psychiatrist.

Sometimes, people just want to be listened to. And many people may be too depressed just because they can't talk to someone abt it and share what's on their mind!

Qatar is developing into a world class nation indeed... and more power to all! But, It would be a shame if this development comes at the cost of people losing their minds over it. Today, we may not realise it, but come additional responsibilities and added work pressure, we just hope its not too late for an individual.

Through this article, I do not mean any disrespect or dishonour to any person or group or any entity. I am just highlighting something which affects all of us-directly & indirectly. If anyone has been offended, i offer my sincerest apologies.

Would love to hear from your, fellow QLers!

Well said... A healthy lifestyle needs to be cultivated amongst everyone... and its not just exercising madly, but in fact, doing everything in moderation.

People are here to work, and work takes up about 1/3rd of their life here... It is a serious issue to be addressed on how employers can reduce work stress amongst their employees, especially those who are away from their families for long periods.

By anonymous• 29 Feb 2012 22:10

Fundamentally, depression is a result of an abnormal lifestyle and thus unhealthy thoughts. For many locals, its no work and all play while for many expats its all work and no play..atleast the kind they are used to back home.

A healthy lifestyle will lead to a healthy mind and for that one needs to do a bit of everything..and most importantly have self worth.

I don't think psychologists can do some good to the depressed folks here.

Fortunately the oil (or LNG) is set to last along time. Meanwhile, we'll invest it to by up overseas businesses, sports teams, land, utilities, etc. That way those investments will continue to give profits long after the oil runs out. Or haven't you been paying attention?

HMC chief calls for new approach in tackling mental health issues

http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=489454&version=1&template_id=36&parent_id=16

.....Part of these preventative measures is having mental healthcare providers work with social groups, often supported by embassies, and voluntary associations that can interact with minority communities and those that would otherwise be hard for social organisations to reach such as labourers living in camps.

Dr al-Kuwari also highlighted the mental health daycare programmes and help-lines for parents trying to help children with mental health issues, among other venues for child protection. ....

Do something for other people, get out of "yourself" , and volunteer or do something for others less fortunate , If you can see yourself as a blessing to others then you will build self-worth , and not depression -

My post is not about a thesis or a book where everything is to be followed, These are my own views, and you have the right to agree or disagree, for your own reasons.

Maybe you have spoken out for some people who think along the same lines as you, and your candor must be appreciated.

Thank you for your views and comments on the topic.. To each, his own.

I agree with javer. Be happy with what you have.

"arabs have not achieved any greatness whatsoever". What a racist and false comment from alumnar.

Denial is often a sign of depression. There are many who are clearly depressed here.

It must rip many of you apart to hate and be jealous of Qatar so much but still have to live under our rules and live in this country by our leave. How sad for you. I would say leave if you don't like it, but obviously many of you cannot afford to. Very sad.

2020 - arabs have not achieved any greatness whatsoever. As you know the money comes from oil. No oil - poof! Imagine working (as in PROPER working) for a living?

Abuse, mistreatment, exploitation, loss of hope, lack of proper medical care, bad living conditions, malnutrition, homesickness and so many more factors lead to depression in most cases in the ME.

Now you tell me 2020 who can change that if not this wonderful and great Nation we are all soooo jealous of (NOT!!!)???

SpeedySid, I hope that Qatar will look in this matter soon, But I am not so confident about it, cuz to be realistic, every top management is always materialistic.. they won't care much about you.. If you are fulfilling their expectations, You can leave the job and go back to home land..

Many left, many are leaving every day, and process is going on...

Do you know...

World Richest person for more then 15 years was an American National...Current World's Richest is not an Arab...

Still the top 3 are not Arabs,

Owners of World Largest Companies are not Arab,

Maximum Inventions done in last 50 are not done by Arabs..

There is no Arab country who is Nuclear Power..

In every aspect of Life, in every field, you can't find any Arab on the top of the list..

So stop talking bullsh*t... We are discussing depression, its symptoms, precautions, and Solutions

The depression is from the jealousy so many have of Qatar--as seen on QL every day. It tears them apart that they come to Qatar and find a nation that is not inferior to theirs and that Arabs have achieved such greatness. So rather than embracing the opportunities Qatar gives them they complain and criticize. Such hating will always lead to depression.

That's why I've recommended that counselling centres be run by the authorities. This will make them accountable and everything will and should be in full confidence.

These steps will go a long way in establishing a positive outlook of people towards their life in Qatar, which will result in better productivity and better levels of happiness...

When you have problem, you just need a listener, and its better that he/she is not Ph.d, Let your mind recognize the problem and sort it out.. once you start discussing it, and get a relief, then you will be able to find a solution of your problem..

The only thing that stop you from telling your personal problems/things to others is that one is afraid that may be their secret reveal to the world, and they will make fun of him/her..

YES! I really believe so! If someone is willing just to listen, that person need not have a PHd in Psychology.. But just an open ear!

Its amazing what can happen to a person when they're just listened to!

I don't question ur doubt tho..Its very valid... But then, there are always ways to reach out to people.. If we have resources, we need the means... And again, it is always better if something like this was initiated by the Medical authorities, as it would lend credibility and proper accountability of this movement.

By Speedysid• 28 Feb 2012 19:06

I don't think so... Its all about our perception...

Qatar, if you must know a reason to be cheerful, has a very good control over its crime rate- something which many other countries don't have.. So Qatar ain't bad..Its all about your perception.

Was there any specific incident which made you behave so? If it is very sensitive, please just say it was(in order to avoid further discussions leading to an unhealthy posting spree)
