my husband has been offered a job in qatar with qatar petroleum. we have a chocolate labrador we are very attached to. the qp website says to bring pets to qatar but is this realistic given the heat? has anyone got any comments on that? also, would we be likely to get accommodation that has some sort of enclosed outdoor area (eg small yard or courtyard?) qp provide accommodation to us.

thks in advance for any info you can offer.

So long as your paperwork is in order, you shouldn't have a problem. Some airlines will not carry animals at certain times of year or certain breeds - check with the airline.

Some breeds are "banned" here (i.e. pit bulls) but people have been able to get special permission.

One company that assists in importing/exporting pets for people and helping with the paperwork is qatarpetrelocators.com

Hi, we'd like to bring our dog to Qatar from the US, and in 5 years or so be able to bring him back to the US when our work is done. Does anyone have any experience with that process recently? I am especially curious about the return trip. Thanks!

activity most dogs get up to in a day. Almost zero. They lie and sleep all day and only surface when something or someone interesting comes along.

Next time, in 50 degree heat, well leave you outside with a tube blowing cold air and a bath filled with water to cool off in... do tell me, do you use your cold tap in your shower in summer for cold water?

"if you don't like the heat... get out of the kitchen... but stop trying to fan the flames before you leave... it will burn you on the a** as you go through the doorway...." ME

maybe for a small toy dog..not big dogs...big dos love outside and play run..act... no room inside then no fun for them...

here dogs got used to heat.....

I ALWAYS HAD DOGS OUTSIDE. IT IS JUST YOU HAVE TO KEEP LOTS OF WATER FOR HIM AND A PLACE WHERE HE/SHE CAN HIDE FROM THE SUN LIKE A BIG TREE OR A GARAGE ,SPRAY SOME WATER FOR HIM TO COOL OFF IN THE NOON TIMES. OR JUST KEEP A SMALL BATHTUB WITH SOME WATER OUTSIDE FOR HIM TO COOL OFF WHEN EVER HE NEEDS. ANOTHER SOLUTION IS TO KEEP A TUBE FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE TO WHERE HE SLEEPS TO BLOW A COLD AIR FOR HIM.YOU CAN CLOSE THAT TUBE WITH A WIRED NET TO PROTECT THE HOUSE FROM UNWATED CROWLING INSECTS.

THIS WAY YOUR DOG WILL MAKE EVEN IF IT IS 50C OUTSIDE.

ALL MY DOGS DID NO PROBLEM..JUST MAKE SURE NO CHAIN TO KEEP HIM FREE TO FIND THE BEST PLACE TO HIDE.

WISH A GOOD LUCK

It's true, some people here are not fans of dogs. Not all villas will let you keep a dog, and some neighbours may not like you keeping one.

As for weather, during the summer here it averages around the mid to high 40s, sometimes peaking at 50 degC, and the humidity gets very, very high.

Hi All,

I check some informations and so far I can see, Qatar people will not like my big dog. Did you think that I´ll have problems with Villas places, or neighbord ?

About the wather, he can leave very well at Brazil and I don´t have any idea abouth the hot summer here compared wit Qatar.

I had three dogs, a Toy Poodle, a Shitzu and a Mixed breed.

Two stayed in but I'd take them for walks (not on the very hot days), the other was outside, but stayed in the garage area. Loved to run around in the garden.

If you're looking to bring in a pet, I recommend Qatar Pet Travel.

souihma: This post is two years old, so don't know that Buburro can help you, but if you are looking to adopt a puppy you should contact QAWS (www.qaws.org) and see if any of them would be a good match for you.

It gets very hot here in Summer. A dog that size will not be able to stay outside.

Hi People,

I will move to Qatar on September with my familly that include Cats and a New Foundland (Big, Black and wit 77Kg). I think that it´s impossible to leave him insidethe house all the time (very big).

He is OK here at Brazil, but I really want to know that it´s possible to move with him without problems to him and to us (find a place with a canil at backyard).

Thank you in advance !

For those animal lovers already here, with or without dogs...

QAWS (of which Warren is a founder) is having a dog walk tomorrow (Friday) at their farm, 9am. Check their website for a map.

Kiwisarah,

Do bring your dog. What Barburro said is true. I had my two in Bahrain for 5 years, at now they are in Russia.............

after -35C with two Bahraini Dogs, I became a true believer that dogs will adapt to anything!

The key is not to bring him out during the peak hot times of the day. The rest of the time he'll be indoors anyway. I saw Labs in Bahrain jogging with their owner once; so you're definately not the first. :)

Good Luck!

Hi Sarah

I will hopefully be relocating in August and will be bringing my German Shepherd Dog with me.... I have been doing my homework regarding bringing Anex with me and have found a company in Qatar that do all the paperwork for you so that you can bring your baby in without any hassles.

I have a small problem in that GSD's are on the control entry list, so i have a bit more spade work to do, so just confirm that your breed is on the free entry list.

Don't think you should have a problem, Smartiepants, a lady on this site had three labs that she took into Qatar, so you should be fine.

You can mail "[email protected]" for more info on their services. Warren is extremely helpful.

For advise on accomodation, you can chat to Safwany, Qatar Living's resident Estate Agent.... he is brilliant with accommodation solutions.

Maybe once I am there, we can get together with the dogs and let them play.... also a brilliant way to meet new people. I am not sure if there is a dog club in Doha, but if not, I will see if I can start one for all the dog lovers in the city. Excellent socialising opportunities, lol.....

Hope this info helps a bit.

Sarah Do bring your dog. Most of the living situations do have small enclosed yards, but we keep our dog inside most of the time. And she is a native dog. The heat and sun are just too much.

We got our dog once we got over here. We were surprised to find out that ticks are the problem here not fleas. Good Luck
