Friends and family in the UK and the Gulf have been mourning the death of British expatriate Layla Lloyd, who lost her life in a tragic car accident in Doha earlier this month. Layla, 29, had only arrived in Qatar some three months earlier, having relocated from Kuwait, where her former colleagues and friends recently organised a fundraising event following her death on July 17. The hairstylist worked at the Glow American Salon in Qatar, and was already a popular member of staff despite having been here for such a short length of time. Gulf Times spoke to her colleagues here, who expressed their shock at the passing of a friend they described as “lovely,” “sweet,” and “beautiful.” “She was so friendly and would prepare food for all of us to bring into work,” said one colleague, adding “she was good fun and such a beautiful girl.” Colleagues expressed their shock at being informed about Layla’s death in the early hours of the morning, and said they simply could not believe the tragic passing of their friend. Inspired by the fundraising event in Kuwait, friends and family in Newport, where Lloyd was born, have also arranged a charity walk from Cardiff to her place of birth, to take place on Sunday. UK-based Dionne Johnson, who is helping to organise the fundraiser, told Gulf Times that Layla was a well-loved friend, who will be sorely missed by people all over the world. “Layla was truly, a beautiful person, inside and out,” she said, noting “she will be missed by many people from all countries and continents.” “We hope our fundraiser will help ease the strain on her family at such a tragic time,” she added. Her former colleagues at the Strands Salon and Nail Bar in Kuwait also posted a tribute online, saying: “Layla, may you DAZZLE and DANCE amongst the stars above. You will be missed but never forgotten.”
if cannot find any other means of getting home then yes you shouldn't drink and drive. even if you feel "fine" you judgement can still be somewhat impaired. i watching oprah one time where they had these people have a few drinks and they said they felt fine. but when they had them do a few task (like holding their arms out and walking the line) they were slow doing it. it wasn't as impaired as being fully drunk but it was impaired some. drunk driving is a serious issue and thousands of people get killed by drink driving every year.people drive crazy enough in this country. we do not need alcohol added to that.about a week or so ago this woman drove into the mini store at woqod gas station. and guess what? she had been drinking.
Jacktheripper I don't care what nationality he is. If he was British my comments would be no different. His arrogant indifference to the law and safety of others, combined with his bullish self belief in his driving abilities, caused the loss of a beautiful young life, and ruined so many others.
Easy it is to point at others knowing that we all are prone to accidents. On many occasions, i almost hit roundabouts although i don't have bad vision. The lack of lights and the way roundabouts are constructed is what the blame should be on. Why is the nationality of the guy the spot of the interest to some? Is that what contributed to the accident? or Did he really do it on purpose?Theory 1, people should not drink and drive. OK, living here single, when you can not even access the beach on a weekend, suggests that you do not go for few drinks to calm down your frustrations? oh you can wait 7 hours for a public transportation or a taxi..Theory 2, People made it to the moon hundred years ago, Qatar is not a poor country and can surely afford a set of 300 $ lights above each stupid roundabout i think?
i am not referring only to the establishment itself. kindly, understand my statement... that is why i said that those who wants to have a "NIGHT LIFE" they need to think of others lives and to act responsibly....
I'm hoping the British Embassy will NOT let this be swept under the carpet. Imagine if something like this happened in UK that person would certainly still be in jail with murder charges and certainly not still gainfully employed.
@xena, my deepest sympathies to everyone involved with the exception of the driver who managed to survive with all limbs and life.
@xedesmarie, the responsibility is on the person drinking NOT the establishment. If one is not fit to drive, one should call a taxi, costs you 50qr and it might have saved a life that night
I have to disagree with you... it has nothing to do with the establishments selling alcohol.
It is the responsibility of the person driving to say they are over the limit and even the passenger/s to not get into the car with one over the limit.
You can take a horse to water but you cannot make him drink - people will do what people will do!
The police must have to take a strong action against establishments who are selling alcoholic drinks and to those who like to have a night life to take into consideration the life of others. act responsibly......
my deepest condolences to the family of this lady....
deepest sympathies to this young ladies family and most distressing to know that the individual who was behind the wheel is already out of jail and back to work.....in Doha, still. There is no justice.
Devestating situation for her family and friends and your heart goes out to them. You never get a full report on these kind of events here, but I hear she was actually in the car that 'turtled', a BMW convertible and possibly had no seat belt on. This all happened upon leaving Seven at La Cigale, and though it's not been said, I have no doubt the lebanese driver had had a few drinks. What's worse is that 'apparently' he dropped his phone and was reaching on the floor to get it when he hit the roundabout.Tragic whichever way this happened, and the doha rumour mill is so strong. Drink driving is an enourmous problem here, which never seems to be properly addressed by the police.
The consequences of one mans driving ego are the senseless loss of a beautiful young girls life, and the wrecking of the lives of friends and family across multiple countries. What punishment will this man receive? I hope its severe, and I hope he looses sleep for the rest of his life when remembers the horror of what his arogant, bullish, stupidity caused.
I saw the original story to this one. She was taken out by a Lebanese guy whose car "Turned turtle" at a roundabout and hit hers. He must have been going at some speed to do that.RIP Layla

That's why I am angry he is not in prison.
And is not in jail?
