By irf77

Dear all, i need tips and advise on doing MBA in Qatar? Anyone of you doing or have info, bearing in mind i am working and looking for either weekend classes or worst case evenings, really do not want to do online or distance learing and it does not hold the best value, so what is the best option? I am thinking about MBA related to Finance as I am the Finance and Admin Manager. Also share with me univ and costs etc and ranking of university, thanks in advance. Regards, Irf

EDIT: You can look into the Postgraduate degree offerings by Qatar University or HEC Paris in Qatar.

of all the comments it makes some people confused but not for me. Well, as they say its always better to learned more than to be stupid at all.

From my experience I did continue my study while working abroad and did took a learning distance education if you heard about Thompson Education Direct Pennsylvania USA, it didnt get me into higher position from the company Im working with but enough for a living. Now that I'm started to get bored with my work i just wish i can bring back time and finish masteral these days it was really a sky rocket price to get MBA!!!

Anyway, still hoping to continue my study and take some courses evening class works fine for me too...Hope someone can be of assistance giving further information

Have a nice day to all......

MB have read your and both Jeses latest post few times no doubt, all agree, if time and money permit, people would opt for ideal university environment, they word being time as well, since majority of folks here are full time working with families to support.

As far ACCA, CMA etc, these are undoubtedly valuable but a CV with MBA and CMA e.g. would be far better than professional qualification alone.

Also you are missing the point that MBA is not only for finance people with your idea of being able to do CPA e.g. vs MBA, we have people in marketing, general manamgnet, purchasing, logistics, even in techinal positions who benefit from MBA

Why don't you share with us the details of good learning options while living in Doha, that generally benefit all.

irf77, I have asked to read Jesus’s post a few times, not just read, but understand.

There is one thing which you guys keep on missing and that is to understand what MBA is. Jesus posed some questions as to why you want do an MBA.. why MBA? I don’t think you spent anytime thinking about it.

I hate repeating myself but for the benefit of people I do. MBA is a management and leadership course where you learn from your MBA experience. You learn from your professors, your fellow students and all around you in the university. MBA is not designed to make you a specialist in any area. Yet, the objective of MBA is to give you basic knowledge of wide verity of subject areas and develop your analytical, communication, leadership and managerial skills. All this is possible only when you sit in the classroom and interact with others and learn from it. This classroom environment will be your platform to develop your soft skills, which you will not otherwise. Just an example, do you think you can become a good orator by reading a thousand books on public speaking without rehearsing and actually doing it? Maybe you think ‘yes’, but the answer is ‘no’.

Understandably, full-time MBA is not an option for everyone. Do what better suits you. What about ACCA, CPA, CFA etc. One does not have to go anywhere to gain these premier qualifications. They are 10 times more recognized and respected than most of the MBAs.

How many of you have sat for GMAT? I may sound rude, but GMAT is a filter and if you do not score well in GMAT, you would not get into a good MBA. If it is just a degree that matters, there are diploma mills as well as accreditation mills. If it is about learning and obtaining a good qualification, there are many options available to the people living in Doha while working full-time.

MB Jeses post is prefer from ideal world point of view, which 90% of us working class cannot afford, i.e. leave job for full time MBA and spend fair amount of money for an excellent MBA.

So these 90% have few options

a) delay studies and wait for the right time, when they can afford to leave job for 2 years and have sufficient cash flow to meet both schooling and general expenses.

or complete the MBA either part time in Qatar or via distance learning, in a 2 years average turn around.

I would opt for latter than delaying plan for years and year.

Hi

Please advise me through which education center is your wife studying. It would appear as if there is really nothing in Qatar and one has to choose one of the UK based universities.

I would appreciate you providing me with more information on this.

Thank you kindly

I'm not sure how much impact an MBA would make to a teachers career prospects, but feel free to PM me or post here if you want any more info.

PS. best not to talk about Welsh rugby internationals at the moment :-(

Good to collide with you again:)..

Thanks for that info. I may have to badger you and your wife about it a bit more once I'm out there if that's ok? Mind you, at that amount of money, I think I'll be researching whether it can pay its way once it's been studied!!

Does a Masters make a massive difference to salary grades (for a teacher, I mean?) I suppose if you wanted to go into Senior Management it would help..

DaRude,... Novi pointed Tallg in the direction of a question I had. It was about where to watch Welsh rugby internationals..:)

The cost is different for each University. Most of the better ones come in at more the £10k and some are a lot, lot more than that - London Business School is around the £70k mark!!!

Does CHN really offer MBA classes? I had called them few months ago but I didn't get any such information. Do you have a number or person I can contact at CHN? So there are 2 semesters a year and one would have to pay 16 K per semester that would be 32 K per year which would be like 2.5 a month. It is not as bad as I had expected considering they are giving evening classes. Most of the distance MBA degrees from UK cost just as much or more and obviously without classes.

irf77,

Before going about this, why do you want to do an MBA? What are you aiming to Achieve? Have you done your GMAT? have you scored well in it? Do you hold any degree and/or certification (ACCA/CIPFA/CIMA/CPA)? What's your budget?

The reason i'm asking is that you want to accomplish something online which is best done through a group. MBA is not an just a learning session where you read a book and do exams. You learn more from interacting with others , exchange tacit knowledge and pick up lots of ideas and ways to see things. I would suggest that you seriously think of doing this on a full time basis or away from the desk. Also if you have enough experience and want to pick up on your management and leadership skills, marketing, communication etc on a short period of time, check out http://www.london.edu/executiveeducation/generalmanagement.html

and their extended finance programs too. Remember MBA is a brand thing so the more reputable school you go to the more money you'll make, get good networks and feel "polished".

How you doing,

Well I would surely agree to what you have mentioned, but then again, just a quick thought, keeping in view today's Fast Paced Life and Economy, Degrees are tough to achieve...

But yes from a good university, you are right on, we cant buy them, we would have to EARN them and thats like the right way to do stuff...

Howdy fella! Yes, I agree that it's pretty easy these days to 'buy' a degree or masters from a so called distance learning university, but to generalise and say that there's "Not too much value in Distant or OFf campus learnign crap..." is a bit narrow minded.

All degree courses or masters carry more weight if they are awarded by a university that is recognised for excellence in that particular field, and any potential employer is aware of that.

Speaking about MBAs in the UK, the majority of the well established and respected universities offer some form of distance learning MBA course. And with the amount of study they require and the prices they charge it's certainly not the cheap and easy way to get an MBA!!!

By ksarat16• 11 Jun 2008 09:08
ksarat16

Well for that question, its something like this, nowadays Distance learning has depreciated in value because of the various hoax and frauds that are going on in the Education Industry however a Distance LEarning does have it due credit if its taken from a really top grade college and that college is rather serious about the Students that graduate from their Uni...fair enough???

By tallg• 11 Jun 2008 08:55

@da - we've collided before!

@kasarat - why do you think there's not much value in distance learning?

I would place my money on Qatar University, cos the last time I found out about that, it sounded pretty good, the subjects were nice enough, and their teaching I have heard is decent enough,

Having said all this, people need to understand a quick thing that, in a place of this sort where the Education System is still picking up, the best solution is either to head for Qatar University cos the job placements I heard is quite nice after completing the MBA course...or wait till one of those American Univs, offer an MBA Programme...as simple as that...

Not too much value in Distant or OFf campus learnign crap...

@FranElizabeth - re: distance learning

My wife has just started a distance learning MBA with a university in the UK and they said that you will need to do approximately 12 hours of study per week, so this should be manageable even if you are working full time. (My wife works 55 hours a week and is fitting in study on the bus to/from site and at home in the evenings/weekends.)

I have been doing research on this MBA thing in Doha for the last one year or more but so far I have found nothing worthwhile. The only options available were at Qatar university but I am not sure about its credentials and the second option was National education center somewhere near Lulu. They offer MBA evening classes couple of times a week and the degree we get is from Allagappa university of Madras. The third option is Doha Training Center, they had an ad in the papers a few weeks ago. They too are offering MBA thu some American university or atleast that is what they claimed but when I went there to check it out, it turned out to be some American university based in the Phillipines. Even the degree that we would get after completing it would say Phillipines on it. So I decided that it is better to do some distance MBA from my own country Pakistan than to go for that..

If any of you find out some good and recognized MBA degree being offered in Qatar, please let me know.

Thanks

This was also my plan too- but Distance Learning- Anyone out there who has done Masters? Is it possible with a full time teaching commitment?

I asked a friend of mine who is a Chef in London, but he was part time on a Research qualification and had to attend his seminars.

New ground to me, but would love to hear from people who have done it?
