Education nowadays!!

Unfortunately very true....

Obviously the teacher has to be able to teach effectively for a child to thrive. It's when some children do not get the mark their parent had hoped for, long gone are the days they question their own child. Blame is generally more directed at the teachers. Sometimes, children just do not have the ability and parents tend to compare their child to their siblings or worse, other children in the class. Luckily I have not had this problem this year!

The image is a bit of a simplification but I do believe the teacher needs to be up to a minimum standard if the student is to thrive.

it is a surprise how the 'bad' teachers remain in the good books of the management and the good ones get in "bad" books of the management.

The fact is that there are good teachers, but also some very bad ones. It is these bad ones who are not only hard to remove, but give the whole profession a bad name.

Look at it this way. We all expect our doctors to be the best that we can be.

But everywhere we look we see obese children and obese parents. Do we blame the doctors?

Noble professions expects respectable treatment; should not be carried away by commercial interests and materialistic goals.

With the increase in spending by Parents on children educations; the expectations from teachers are tend to increase about quality of education and discipline.

Parents responsibilities is to imbibe family values, religion and good morals in children.

LP....what is professional in Qatar? I agree :)

I have no idea if you are a decent teacher, but you are easy to wind up with a little sarcasm. (although the stuff on the declining quality of the teaching profession is serious)

Im talking about teachers in general Bachus...and my school is well resourced but can always be improved if the money was put into it. Some teachers do not have the best quantity or quality of resources and so we do our best with what we have got (those teachers who care enough about their job and see it as a vocation rather than a salary).

Of course I must be one of the exceptions to your apparent trend.

But I thought your school was so great and well resourced MT?

A bigger problem is the declining quality of people who go into teaching. The profession has declined in salary and prestige in comparison to other professions over the last generation, as so the best and brightest are going elsewhere.

There are exceptions to the trend, but the trend is undeniable.

Move abroad for better salary? That'll be the tax system and benefit scroungers coming in to play. Hate paying for the useless fecks that are destroying the country. The welfare state kills this country...

Anyways, why are there 2 parents??? Not too common nowadays!

Teachers are sometimes limited due to funds not being spent properly on resources to further education or make it as advanced as parents expect. We do the very best with what we have got.

You have a similar situation at the American School of Doha, brit. Teachers are from the US, parents are heavily involved! Unfortunately it's expensive. But that's the weird anglo-saxon system. Private schools are a no-go in other European countries. They are considered minor to the public schools which offer the more difficult curriculum. Hence, Einstein went to a PUBLIC school!

Regarding quality of teachers in GCC. The best operation I have seen was the German School, Riyadh. There, the teachers were brought over from Germany on 2 year secondments. This meant that they were not only professionals, but also familar with the curriculum and latest teaching methods.

The education should be free, that's number one. Secondly, parents must fill the other half of the day with the children. Dropping them off at a school and then going to work is the fatal mentality. What is needed are professional teachers AND professional parents. But what is professional in Qatar?

I hope parents don't think that the more they pay to the school, the less work they have to do as parents.

Children need to be read to, spoken to, played with, and taught by parents. Parents who don't sit and help their kids with their homework have only themselves to blame if the child has poor grades.

In the old days, Teaching was a vocation, pretty much like nursing. Now , not so much.

Having said that , in my days Teachers were respected and listened to. Nowdays, teachers have to respect the students.

Whilst I agree that there are many many good teachers here in the Gulf, there are also many many bad ones, who are only hired for their background, looks or salary.

Teaching used to be a noble profession until some 23-1/2 years back....after that it became mostly commercial. Hard to find a good teacher, with the character, the profession demands, these days.

Blame it on the teachers. If they don't have the natural authority towards the students AND the parents, they are in the wrong profession!

Ability and skills are natural phenomenon; could be improved with extra efforts.

While efforts and achievements are based on the hard work put by student/teachers. Regular assessments and periodical reports are the best indicators to work more on poor performing children.

Yes. It is the bitter truth...and we do sadly have to accept the fact that some parents expect their children to take less responsiblities for their own learning and put more responsiblity on the teacher when they do not achieve the marks they had expected. When their child is not putting in the effort or simply does not have the same ability level as others in his/her class.

If teachers only wanted better salaries they would quit teaching altogether and become engineers.

Parent should be grateful that anyone is willing to try and teach their kids for a reasonable salary.
