Emir's response to Gaza attack

Reason #278 why I love this man. The Emir has rightly pointed out that this is an Israeli AND Egyptian blockade, not just an Israeli blockade.

Bit hard to condemn Israel unilaterally as an Arab League when one of your own nations is cooperating in the blockade.

I love small talk politicians, they are just full of it!

essentially H.H Sh.Hamad is telling the Arab world that they must have a united front & be collectively supportive of Palestine before condemning Israel's actions when one of their own is doing the same...well put Sh.Hamad!...

Virtually all of Israel's oil comes from Egypt, Iraq and a pipeline from the Caspian Sea that runs through Turkey. If the Muslim world really wanted to stand by the Palestinians, these countries could shut down the Israeli economy and war machine in a matter of months. KSA and other countries could make the export of their oil and liquid natural gas dependent upon the buyer not re-exporting to Israel. It would mean some economic hardship for these countries but not even a fraction of a fraction of what people in Gaza endure on a daily basis. Before you say it will never happen, I admit that I know it won't.

I do not think violence against Israel is the answer, because launching rockets at it only allows Israel to play victim and gives it an excuse to use its military. Actions such as the humanitarian flotilla and other forms of peaceful civil disobedience show what thugs the Israeli government are, and do more to turn world opinion against its policies towards the Palestinians. Even in the US the mood is changing, as the traditionally pro-Israel media like CNN is giving more coverage to sufferings of people in Gaza, and I think this is helping to push the US government to SLOWLY rethink its position (the US will never abandon Israel, but there are a wide range of levels of support). Traditional moderate allies of the US and Europe like Turkey speaking out against Israel is also helping. Even within Israel this will aid the minority of people who oppose their government's policies towards Gaza. That is until extremists like Ahmadinejad starting spouting off to the media about wiping Israel off the map.

Israel is strong bços of Arab disunity. Palestinians are treated as 2nd rate by their brothers bços of the same disunity. Wonder what it will take for the Arabs to get together, and solve this once and for all.

I also agree with linc on that same statement part, Justbecause.

Nic said "I think the finger must also be pointed at other nations who keep the Palestinians permanently in camps or in the status of "foreign visitors" rather than allowing them to fully integrate into the countries to which they have fled (something of which ALL the Arab league are guilty)."

Spot on buddy. The Arabs dont give a crap about the Palestinians, inside or outside of the country. This is why they continue to suffer and no one does anything thing about it.

the leaders they've all condemned and said their words on this attack and the killing.

but have you and me done or is doing?

Israel has no problem unless until his economy is strong and its you and me who makes his economy strong by consuming everything in the market, from cigaratte, to cosmetics, to food products, diapers, etc etc etc....

Egypt won't lift the blockade in any meaningful way--at least beyond a gesture to allow humanitarian aid here and there. Egypt receives almost as much foreign aid money from the US as Israel (Israel is #2 and Egypt is #3); in fact, Egypt's aid money is pegged on Israel's.

I think the finger must also be pointed at other nations who keep the Palestinians permanently in camps or in the status of "foreign visitors" rather than allowing them to fully integrate into the countries to which they have fled (something of which ALL the Arab league are guilty). When refugees fled Cuba, Bosnia, Poland, etc. the European and countries of the Americas did not keep them in refugee camps for generations. Even the US allows Palestinians to become citizens once they have lived there for a certain period.

and thats the reason I made the above comment. This region needs a new leadership.

It doesn't seem something to be applaused ! Infact I would have been surprised if he didn't say this. There have been lot of lows in the Qatar-Egypt relationship in the past and the statement that Emir made is as much a reflection of those past 'hiccups' as it is of the present crises.

By Olive• 2 Jun 2010 14:16

So? He's calling out an obvious wrong being done by Egypt. Frankly the "hiccups" with Egypt are well deserved.

Hats Off to him for his straight forward statement. Egypt should lift the blockade permanently.

I can say it's a pleasant surprise that the Emir has made this bold statement. I really didn't see this coming.

He's made some bold statements like this in the past. The man's not afraid to speak his mind. One of the reasons I like him.

It's a start. But until the Arab "league" can start working on the same page the people of Gaza will continue to suffer.

Egypt has opened it's boarders for a limited amount of time following the attack (and subsequent condemnation)

Wise guy and rightly pointed out by him. Both the countries should be forced to lift the blockades.
