( for expatriates and all) Some thoughts on fasting and the diet and life style of prophet Mohammad
Just a few random thoughts that come to mind in ramadan ...
Possiblly things that most dont know, so i though i d share em with u ...
1) The newest trend in healthy dieting these days is protien shakes..
Nutrisionists advise us to Eat or drink something every 3 hours , and came up with protien shake as the perfect way to feed ourselves between the 3 main meals ( or substitute a meal)..
More than 1400 years ago, Prophet Mohammad used to do the following every few hours..
He used to dissolve some honey into a glass of water and drink it...
The main ingredient in honey is ...
u guessed it,Protien..
in addition to that, honey is full of a wide range of vitamins and minerals, making what the prophet was doing more tnan 1400 years ago possiblly the best protien shake on earth!!!
2) The most common food the prophet used to ( chew on) all day is dates...
Scientific research has shown that dates ( other than including an increadible array of vitamins and minerals not available anywhere else in nature), come equipped with a whopping 20 ESSENTIAL amino acids...
Also research has concluded that the DNA composition of a palm tree is astonshinglly simillar to the Human DNA!!!
3) Fasting has taken several shapes and forms with jews, christians and muslims...
I havent tried the jewish and christian fast , but from my experience, Fasting ( whether in ramadan or anyother time) in the muslim way is an INCREADIBLE ENERGY BOOSTER ( against all odds)...
4) From several readings about healthy life styles , scientific research in the west suggests that the following elemnts are most conducive to a healthy living
a) Sleeping before 11 pm
b) waking up before sunrise
c)limiting food intake during the morning , and eating ur last meal before 7 pm
d) Taking a small nap around mid day
Observing how a muslim would typically live in ramdan ( which was the way the prophet lived his entire year) , u would observe the following..
a) To be able to catch alfajr prayer and eat something before it ( as it marks the start of the fast), u would need to wake up at around 3:30/3:45 am( before sun rise )
b) to sustain him/herself during the day, a muslim would usually eat something very ligh at that time ( yougart or something like that), consistent with the findings above mentioned..
c) to be able to wake up for fajr, u would need to sleep no later than 11 am to get a good nigh sleep.
d) having slept about 5 hours during the night, most muslims ( especially in ramadan) are tired by mid day , and usually nap between the Dohr and A'sr prayers ( mid day)...
I just found it facinating that a life style lead by a man 1400 years ago, and that is somehow a neccesity for any muslim to comply to during ramadan to be able to keep up with prayers and the food intake limitations of the fast, is exactlly what modern science preaches today after hundreds of years of research...
What do u ppl think?:)
cheers u all.

Actually the main ingredient in honey is sugar.
I am simply with you. I am ashamed myself of the general practice. Some tend to glorify this Month and fasting to bring the attention of Non-Muslims and make them appreciate this month to harmonize the sphere with warm feeling.
I believe good percentage of those fellows have very good intentions, no harm is meant.
Sorry, if by any chance I sounded harsh in tone in my previous communication. I did not mean it at all.
Salam friend.
Hi Happy,
Don't take it as a personal comment. There are many people who work hard during Ramadan and I have 2 such friends I always admire. Now I can add one more to the list. But most people display this attitude and I am also generally told that nothing works in Ramadan etc. But I think it is agreeable that when we fast everyday for a month, we tend to become tired. It's only natural.
My take is, there is no need to glorify with scientific explanations etc. Just take it to heart, be devout, and chug along.
I am a Muslim, observe Ramadan, work 8 hours straight 08:00 am- 04:00 pm, and still working now as we speak in this late hour. Ramadan has nothing to do with being fat lazy slacking (non) worker.
Exactly like Christmas in its Holy beautiful spirit, none of the over-commercialized practices, from gifts, intensive shopping to very large food tables, has anything to do with this sacred event.
So, when I visit a church on a Sunday and find it half empty, I do not doubt Christianity, I may doubt people.
I use my brain and judge religion/ rituals by the Book not by the common practice. You and anyone can do that same. It’s a very easy thinking process.
Salam
Hi Hussamf,
I like the composition. Fasting is good, I agree. We do it all the time in India but though not as long as here in Ramadan.
But tell me one thing. If fasting is an incredible energy booster, why do everyone fasting during Ramadan look like they are going to die any minute. Just visit any office and try scheduling a meeting or talking to someone. Do it after another week has passed.
