Facebook users beware

Before people complain that this did not transpire in Qatar, keep in mind two things:
1. We are all using online chat sites (if not Facebook than QL)
2. Arguments can get rather heated and personal on QL

Thank goodness for anonymity on QL, I say. Those who call for open IDs should think twice.

Dutch boy sentenced in "Facebook Murder"

A 15-year-old Dutch boy was sentenced to a year in juvenile detention on Monday for stabbing to death a girl whose Facebook posts reportedly led to a contract for her killing.

The case, known in the Netherlands as the "Facebook murder", caused widespread debate about the role of social media in violent crime.

The court said the boy did not know the victim and had murdered her "at the request or instructions of others".

Dutch media reported that the 15-year-old victim, named in court documents as Winsie, had argued for weeks with two friends on the social networking site before they allegedly asked the defendant, who was 14 at the time, to kill her.

He was offered a 1,000 euro payment, the media reported.

"I am not happy with one year for my daughter's life," her father said outside the courthouse. "But that's what the law book says. We were powerless and so were the authorities."

What is this world coming to ? Absolutely ridiculous. How can someone get one year for killing someone or playing their part in a murder? I though the sentencing in the UK was bad but this is a DISGRACE. COME On people of this world surely a life is not worth more than money. People get bigger sentences for fraud. i for one know that there is no amount of money on this planet worth more than my life. my heart goes out to that childs parents and family.

I've been been "on" QL for a while myself. Never gotten any threats, probably coz I'm using it for its intended purpose.

Or some just want to hoard attention and be "known".

Point taken, after 20 years or more of "internet", only an idiot would share information in an online public forum.

It's by virtue of having been on QL for a while and commenting on threads that deal with politics and local culture.

Having said that, I'm pretty sure LP has received far more than me.

My point is that anonymity and controls to protect it are important and people should be careful about sharing personal information.

How horrible. Were the two friends not tried and sentenced too?

Only a handful gets threat online. Most serious ones are personal. To say that you're receiving "multiple threats" either means you're of relevance or utterly annoying

Are you still going on about this? The Qatar Living Lounge is about conversations online.

More important: why don't you post your name, address and phone number?

I don't after receiving multiple threats--like many QLers. This story goes to the heart of the case for anonymity on discussion boards.

"We are all using online chat sites (if not Facebook than QL)."

First of all, I am NOT using FaceBook, and secondly, QL is NOT a chat side. You got it all wrong, man. Irrelevant thread.
