First Aid
Today in City Centre a man collapsed outside Carrefour. By the time I walked over there was a crowd of about 15 people around him , including a security guy .
I am a First Aider and have been for about 20 years. Lomg story short. Nobody knew first aid except me so I had to go into auto pilot and did the basic ABC.
All turned out well I am glad to say. However I just want to suggest to everybody , Please please try to do a first aid course. Even the most basic one day courses with a recognised provider is worth it.
In 20 years I have had to use my training only about 7 or 8 times , but I know that on at least a couple of occasions I have actually helped to save lives.
Whether you are trained or not, in Qatar this is not relevant. It is not legal to administer first aid, if the person dies you will have to take responsibility. You can be the highest trained, cleverest, better than anyone else first aider in the world. You are still breaking the law in Qatar.
If a person you tried to help died because it is really his time to die then you will be blamed for his death by his relatives even though you have good intentions because your the last one to touch the person before he died. The big problem is, you will be asked on who's authority you got to touch a dying man, only the police or personnel from EMS can. So i will not hold unto that statement of yours that " A trained first aider wont mess up"
"Masunod nawa ang iyong kalooban!"
Where can one go to learn the First Aid Course.
Well done, Keith; I would have done the same. A trained first aider wont mess up, and as I'm sure you know, a first aider asks the person if he or she is conscious if they want help. If they say yes, you help. If unconscious - its a judgment call.
By the way, my point is to congratulate you on doing what you thought best. I'm also wondering whether St John Ambulance has any presence here in Qatar. I found their training to be superb when I did Level III in South Africa.
Best regards,
Lance
and who told you this joke
wonderful statistics, nior :x
---Life is Fragile, Handle with Prayer---
Before you do ABC, chk the Nationality, if EGY... Noway... 40% of there people are HEPATITIS...
everything is possible
first aid is still good to know, if anything would ever happen to your family or friends. it could mean the difference between life and death while you wait for the ambulance.
respect your choice SN. who knows, i might change my mind and stand and gawp w/ you too:-)
you're right, Vegas but still i'll take the risks of being sued. we're talking about human life here. it's also God's will if they will sue me or not:-)
nope, not me I'm no superhero! I get paid to save lives but thats work time, out of work I'm not a qualified first aider so I'll just stand and gawp!
supernurse...i'm crushed:-(....and i thought we have a superhero in the midst of QL:-P
Hmm... Maybe Keith and the rest of the guys out there who wanted to administer first aid has the guts to face the odds of being sued after. I might say calling 999 will be best and safe of getting into trouble... ;D
They prob will still sue you...
As they wanted his life insurance...
You can't teach experience...
well done keith brown! like you, i wouldn't hesitate to help the man. i am a nurse and have seen too many lives wasted because nobody cared enough to help. when it comes to a person's life, every second counts and you just cannot wait for the EMT's to arrive. the thing is, you must do it right the first time and it's kinda intimidating to some.
good job but dont try to do it agine??
simply if any thing happend to this guy thay well say ( who told you to moved him,,, he die becouse of your worong actions,,,) and you will be in big trouble, just dail 999 and thay will be there soon.

That said, when faced with that situation it isn't always that easy. Back home i once saved the life of someone who was choking to death and was losing consciousness. After she had walked away just fine, I heard someone mutter that I could have broken one of her ribs. I wouldn't have done what I did if i had not had experience and qualifications to back it up and it was on a beach in the middle of nowhere with no mobile signal. It's idiots like him that make people decide not to get involved.
Thats good advice jasmine and relly worth knowing. Thnx
There is no Good Samaritan law here, you are not supposed to administer first aid to a stranger. I would also keep walking. I checked when I arrived here because
I am a registered nurse from ED background, they said that all you can legally do is call the emergency services.
Actually .. I was stucked in similar situation
and i was thinking why i don't know the ABC of first AID ..
On a friday day suddenly my boss called me to go to work .. and there was the store keeper doing some arranging .. when he cut his finger ..
Thank GOD when i got my car they gave my first Aid case in it .. BUT for the bad luck :( i didn't know how to use it .
and it ends up with me driving on 180 kms per hour cuz he was bleeding a fountain of blood .. and i can't do anything ..
instead of saving him i was about to kill both of us .. thank god we reached the hospital safely ..
But i thought for a while .. if i knew ABC basic of first aid i wouldn't drive like that ..
Is there a place that we shud go to learn the basic of first aid ? We all need it .. we can save a life .. or we can be the reason of death with our ignorance .

Hammad International Training Center( HITC) if you want to be updated in CPR. It is located beside the EMS office(you can see many ambulances parked there) near Hammad Hospital.
"Masunod nawa ang iyong kalooban!"
before you gave first aid to the guy? Its a protocol to any trained first aider to call for help first before administering First aid. Especially with this condition of loss of consciousness. First aid per se is a tool used to extend a persons life till qualified personnel( Paramedics/ EMT's)arrive at the scene.
Masunod nawa ang iyong kalooban!"
I haven't updated my CPR training for a few years. Does anyone know where courses are available?
btw Keith, good job.
Thankyou.I will remember that next time.X
Duh ,,,,, obviously not got my clever head on today.:-&
nah, the name is extremely misleading......
Dunno , you tell me , or is it a secret.?
Keith Brown....a professional what lol?!1
Works at home more than anywhere,,,,,
"Common sense is a particularly UNCOMMON sense"
well done Keith, my certificate is expired since one year I need refresh asap.
Very important training, especially at home!
"Those who are not with us are against us"
Hey Super , I was hoping for your input especially as you are a professional.
Thnx.
Yes he is fine as far as I know. First Aid training does not in any way give you medical qualifications or the knowledge to diagnose. However I did advise him that he had been unconscious for at least 45 seconds and must seek medical advice.
I first did an extensive first aid course because I am a qualified sports coach. Two weeks after i finished I was actually witness to an awful accident involving one fatality. Nothing to do with work , it was on a road , but , yes I agree with you , presence of mind , follow up in your training is essential . I did annual refresher courses with exams .
The legal perspective is.....if you claim to be competent in first aid and you mess up big style you are accountable......
Its best, in my opinion to keep on walking or don't say a thing, leave it to the professionals. People will sue even the most genuine do gooder if you stuff up!
Bravo to you. Thanks for being fearless and kind.
alexa's right., one has to be cautious with such act.
heard about this " The Good Samaritan Law"? i believe they have this in US, do they have this in Sharia?
good one, keith.,

sometimes people have done this training but in real situation they forget everything, that why refresh and exersises are required.
Keith, did that guy survived?
"Those who are not with us are against us"
Thnx Alexa , that was actually going to be my next question .
How is the legal perspective here.?
I just couldnt help but step up but had it in my mind all the time that maybe that was why nobody else stepped up. I cant blame them if that was the case.
I accept the consequencies of my actions regardless , right is right .
Good point Cutey, I agree 110%.
