Minister of Public Health and Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Health HE Abdullah bin Khalid al-Qahtani yesterday announced more five cases of swine flu in Qatar, taking the number of confirmed cases to 10.
The minister told Qatar News Agency that the first case announced yesterday was a Qatar-based Egyptian youth aged 17, who returned from Washington on board the Qatar Airways flight QR052, the same flight in which the two Iraqi and Jordanian youths travelled, who tested positive with the flu.
The second case is a Qatar-based Filipino aged 29, the wife the Filipino man who arrived from Washington yesterday on Qatar Airways flight QR052 and confirmed with the flu, the minister said.
He added the other cases were three Australian brothers including twins aged 12 and third aged 8, who arrived from Australian city of Melbourne, on board Emirates Airways flight EK843, via Dubai, to visit a Qatar-based relative.
All the infected people were provided with anti-virus medicine and they are in good health and recovering at their homes, he said.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Council of Health (SCH) has called on passengers who recently travelled on five specific flights to go to the nearest medical centre for check-up “if they have symptoms of fever, cough, sore throat or runny nose.”
The flights are: Qatar Airways - QR052 (Washington-Doha) on June 12, Qatar Airways - QR052 (Washington-Doha) on June 13, Emirates – 843EK (Dubai-Doha) on June 13, Qatar Airways – QR084 (from the US) on June 14 and Qatar Airways – QR154 (from Bahrain) on June 15.
Two cases were confirmed on Wednesday after three cases (two toddlers and a teenager) were tested positive on Tuesday.
The first of the cases is a Jordanian resident of Doha, aged 17, who recently returned from Washington accompanied by an Iraqi youth.
The second case is a Filipino, 31, who arrived in Doha also from Washington on Qatar Airways.
Both patients are receiving treatment and are in stable health condition, according to the Health Minister.
Members of their families were also given anti-viral medication as a “preventive measure”.
To obtain or give information about swine flu, the public may call the SCH on designated hotline 6740951 and HMC on 4430438

It seems that most cases of swine flu come from America.

It is really becoming alarming, we should be careful and take proper steps dealing with this pandemic disease.

before that we talked about bird flu and today swine flu.

so what medicine and big research labs do today?

well the best remedy for flu is alcohol for those who can. not necessarily drinking it: drinking alcohol has a very short time benefit but huge reverse long time effect on slowing the chemiotactism (the immune system). do inhale alcohol from the nose.beside alcohol reduce humidity of the throat in big quatinty by deshydrating it.

otherwise water water water is the best solution. the flu virus is killed by humidity.

yes HUMIDITY is his worse nightmare and that's why we have running nose when we catch flu.

the body raising the humidity to kill the virus.

in dry countries like desertic countries the flu is free to roam. doha although humid is dry because of the ACs who take out the humidity from the air in the houses.

In the last 3 years every time I have flown to London I have had to put up with at least one throat clearer/spitter on my row. I am flying mid July and am going to summon up the courage to complain if this happens again. I once had to sit in a car driven by a coughing, sneezing, spitting man and I swear I could actually feel myself catching it and I was ill for weeks. No more Mrs Nice, this time I will complain!

Zaen - no need to turn to insults. It does you argument no good. Please read up about swine flu to try and get a better understanding of exactly what it is and what it does, as the facts you're quoting so far are false.

running around shutting down travel isn't going to help anything. As its been said before..its just a strain of the flu. Common health practices will help stop the spread of the disease and if you DO happen to get ill, go to the doctor, get the antiviral and STAY HOME and get well!

As far as Mikaylasmom post...the swine flu has been around MUCH longer than one year..I remember getting the vaccine for it when I was a freshman in college and that was back in 1975...stone ages ago..Her numbers are from the time they gave that particular strain a name. Its probably been around longer than that, they just hadn't isolated it yet. Panicking isn't going to help anything. Common sense will.

Like any contagious disease, those are the most risk are the elderly, the very young and those with weakened immune and/or respiratory systems.

If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you; that is the main difference between a dog and man.

no point in stopping flights. it is already here. People get a grip---its the flu, not ebola.

The regular flu has killed way more people than the swine flu. The regular flu kills 1/4 to 1/2 million people a YEAR. The swine flu has only killed in the 10's of thousands.

Zaen, every year some of my friends or family get the flu. It's not that bad.

It's flu. It's curable. Qatar has twice as much of the necessary medicine than the amount recommended by the WHO, and they have requested more.

Just use your common sense! Normal precautions should be enough. Unfortunately no other countries have followed the good example of Mexico of shutting down schools and even transport for a while... so we have to put up with being just careful and use the normal preventive ways not to get sick.

Good luck and enjoy life, the mind is the more powerful tool we have and it has been proved, the stronger your mind is, the stronger you get affected or healed! it all depends on YOU!

as none of your family or friend suffer this pig flu. I believe you'll change once you saw once of your love infected. See how it spread in Mex, US n Aussie. It is better to avoid it to enter rather than fight it here. Thing about the cost, the medicine, health & economical effect if gov should fight it here. Travel ban will not shut the economy, it'll limit inessential travel, like vacation, study visit, shopping, leisure, etc. While for business actually the communication & commercial system was so advance, even for a big can be made without direct meeting (face to face)

Sorry, it is way too drastic, and it wouldn't do anything but trouble. IT IS JUST A FLU!!

Plus, I think we all know someone or maybe ourselves, that you fly and you catch a cold in the plane? It's just the bad publicity about swine flu that panics everyone!

relax and take care, that's it!

As someone mentioned earlier, ginger is good.I think we should increase our immunity by eating more citrics. In the mean time stay away of the enclosed places(apart from your house)unless you really have to do otherwise.

God help us

Zaen - stopping flights or travel banning effectively shuts down the country and would cause all sorts of issues for the economy among other things. It's the flu. It spreads like any other flu. It can be cured. No need for drastic measures.

cursed flu came here is clear, from a flight from highly infected countries. So why not stop these flights in a moment?

Now, I believe that a lot more people in this flight were infected along several hours stay-together with the infected persons on board, perhaps also the cabin crews.

And how many others infected when all of them arrived here and interact with other?

If the reported case is 10, possibly the real number is 10 times.

Stopping the flights or travel banning can be the solutions. It is better than let this disease spread in this country.

Since it is unlikely that people will stay home, people will be out and about mingling with the masses. Consequently, WASHING your hands several times during the day is one easy thing to do to help prevent contracting this flu.
