Gratuity for housemaid

What is the customary gratuity for a housemaid? We will be leaving Qatar after three years this summer and want to be very generous to our wonderful maid.

Hi Mandilulur,

I agree with Uranus1's suggestion regarding gratuity, 1 month's salary per year served seems to be a pretty well established norm across various large organizations also.

Also, sent you a PM regarding your maid.

Thanks

Mandi, what nationality is your maid? I have a visa to sponsor a sri lankan, but am having terrible trouble finding one. I am from the UK and expecting my first baby next week!

Good for you Mandilulur. She's a member of your family and deserves to be treated as such. I spent two months finding the right family to adopt my dog when we came here, the least I could do is the same for the human being that has taken such good care my home and family.

If you are still looking for a suitable family for her, if you PM me I know a recently arrived American family is search of a good maid with experience with a Western family.

Uranus, sounds good! She always does an incredibly outstanding job and I will miss her so much. Funny thing, it's been hard finding a family for her... I guess I have high standards.

If there's nothing written in the contract then 21 days salary per year she may be granted...

If she has worked for you the entire time, I would suggest the following:

1. If she wishes to stay, find a good, suitable family for her.

2. One month's salary for each year she has worked for you up to two years. This is typical severance for expats in higher end jobs, and I don't see why it should not be the case for your maid.

3. Tell her that you plan to provide her this on condition that she continues to perform her duties to your expectations until you leave.

4. If she does a great job after that, I'd through in an extra thousand as a gratuity.
