September tapes is a fictional account of a supposed journalist on the hunt for Bin Laden straight after 9/11, few twists to the tale but wont spoil it for you, definitly worth watching though.
Equilibrium, very much like the book 1984, where the people take a sense inhibitor drug, naturally there are those living outside of this environment etc, Christian Bale plays one of the enforcers very good film.

Just to list some few favorites:
1. The last of the Mohicans
2. Braveheart
3.The Wedding Planner
If you like action movies, look for Equilibrium starring Christian Bale, its a great action flick with special effects scenes similar to the Martix.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
The Princess Bride
man, i love those movies. i would have loved to have pulled a bueller in high school.
and the lines! my name is indigo montoya... :-)
and what about caddyshack? I love this part:
"So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice. "
Then you should also include
Gone with the wind - one of charmeds favourites
Anna and the king - again charmeds

I always tell the truth, even when I lie
Brotherhood of the Wolf;
French, fantastic, set in the days of three cornered hats, very stylish, maybe a bit of a boys film but with much more depth than the Hollywood drivel
Old Boy;
Korean, unbelievably good, very deep, very good story. With a very big OMG moment at the end.
Ran;
Akira Kurosowa [no appologies if I spelt that whong], medieval Japanese version of King Lear, about 4 hours long, breathtaking scenery and scenes.
Memento;
I could tell you the whole story and not spoil a thing, gut with an extremely short term memory due to an assault trying to find his wifes killer, he can only remember about the last 3 or so minutes. Incredible.
SDr you have opened up a floodgate on this....
Must admit my DVD collection has grown exponentially since moving out here, however most are what you have described as mainstream.
Favourite films probably the alien saga, lord of the rings trilogy. One of the latest ones we watched that isnt really mainstream is "September Tapes" worth a watch but you must keep telling yourself its not real as it comes across as exactly that.
Another favourite film has to be Brother Bear, purely for the comedic value...the two moose...not a bear hes a beaver hey!!! CLASSIC
We came we saw we were Qatarized
Although it has received more mainstream attention in the states in recent years, Boondock Saints was orininally a lesser known movie with a cult-like following. I suggest you check out the movie and the website. It has a crazy fanbase.
