Sorry folks..I do confess to hijacking/sideswiping a thread or two (perhaps three?) but I'm used to posting on another website that does allow that and we get into some really great discussions that way. Didn't know it upset some folks, so I'll conduct myself more to the guidelines of the site here. I do apologize (excuse being I'm new....)

Gypsy, I love reading your posts. You really make me laugh and your debate skills are admirable. Don't worry what people think. People looking for answers will find them.

Why do you feel like a goof off Azzy. See this is the problem, these people who make us feel bad for having fun and making jokes. Saying that this isn't a chat room or what we have to say doesn't help anyone? Well it helps us. Relieves boredom, we make friends. Whats so wrong with going off topic, or cracking jokes. You shouldn't feel guilty Azzy, nor should you hide in the Filipino expats thread, don't let a few people who troll through these pages waiting for someone to say something stupid scare you away.

Just wafted over them like I was invisible and they continued without comment.

prettier (and no sillies, I'm not gay either! lol) I will give you a compliment, and that is for such a young person, you have a wonderfully bright brain in that head of yours. It goes quite well with your personality..which is totally a crack up! I enjoyed getting to know you also, thank you. I look forward to many more get togethers with you and everyone so I can learn more about them as well.

I love getting on forums to share thoughts and jokes and razz whoever I think can take it..but like you, I don't want to offend anyone and I just might, without intending to..so like Gypsy, please let me know privately and I will discuss and if wrong, I will apologize. I'm not into hurting people at all.

Most people give and receive respect on here. However, there are some that can't get past their own importance and therefore have to force their personal issues on others. That's a shame because I'm sure they have a very valid point in there somewhere but everyone will shut down when they start spouting their hatred. They just don't realize that we are all one BIG world and if we all got along and accepted each other as we are, then perhaps all the leaders would too, eventually...(I know, I sound like a Miss America contestant!!! I think... :)) Ohh geez, now even my smilie has a double chin!

Anyway...its very good to have you back to "normal". I was wondering if you had become a Stepford wife...you were scaring me.

By Gypsy• 25 Jun 2007 10:15

Hey Scarlett, can I just say it was a pleasure to meet you on Friday, you're certainly one classy lady. :D

As for hijacking topics, don't worry about it, despite the small number of people who currently have their (please excuse my crass language) "panties in a bunch" over thread hijacking and arguments and such, most of us come here to have a chat and a laugh and enjoy our working hours, and generally relieve the boredom that is Doha.

(Ironically, you'll notice some of the biggest complainers only ever post in the controversial topics and seem to disappear anytime things cool down a little, seems despite all their assertions that they don't like the language and crude humor that sometimes happens on QL they really love it and lurk waiting for someone to make a joke that they don't approve of, or hijack a thread so they can make snide self righteous comments about it.)

We can't please everyone in life, that's just a fact. I was watching a really popular television program from Canada last night, and was in tears laughing so much. The show was really quite crude, lots of swearing and sex jokes, and such, but I found it such a relief after the conservatism I face here on a daily basis. Sometimes it's just nice to say poopoo or make jokes about our private parts, especially when such things are so frowned on in this country, yet a daily part of life and general comedy from back home.

Sometimes we forget, especially when we get comfortable with a certain group of like minded people, that we aren't in our own living rooms laughing with friends over a couple of pints. That we are in fact on a website with over 12,000 people. We make inside and crude jokes that may offend some. There's nothing wrong with this. In fact I take it as a tribute to Qatari that he has made such a comfortable website that people feel relaxed enough to be themselves. Some people with a different sense of humor may call this "trolling" but everyone, and every culture has a different sense of whats funny. (I personally don't find slapping women very funny, but this seems to be a big part of Arabic comedy shows, go figure).

I think the most important thing to do when we get caught out on this is to apologize and move on. Not to dwell and argue and point fingers "He said this, they did that, she said this" is playground behavior, as is crying to Qatari every time someone says something you don't like.

I for one would please like to ask anyone who has a problem with what I say to please PM me. Sometimes I do not realize what I type could be offensive, as I'm having a good time. If you PM me we can get in a rational, mature discussion about my behavior and hopefully not turn into enemies on the site just because I made a joke about flashing my breasts that you did not approve of. Surely this course of action is much better then making a public display in a vain effort to embarrass me. Also I really do not believe that this site is a place to air personal grudges you might hold against certain members. If you don't like someone fine, ignore them, do not pick apart every single one of their posts, it's really quite immature and annoying and will lead to these personal attacks that everyone dislikes so much.

I personally want to apologize to Aisha for my sarcastic remarks, As always I was trying to make a joke and lighten everyones day. Sometimes I fail miserably at this, but hey I'll be the first person to admit that I'm not perfect. This is a family site, one big disfunctional family site.

Cheers, everyone.

for this behavior. Hijacking threads is not acceptable. I am ashamed that a countryman of mine could do this. Has anyone found my finger yet?

LOL I'm like that too! I can't hide my expressions! My friends can totally know what I'm thinking by the look on my face...we need to practise on our innocent look...think happy innocent thoughts...hmmm...bunnies...rainbows...butterflies...flowers...pink pixies...drunken orgies...damnit this isn't working! haha

Have a nice day :-)

to keep that look off your face? doesn't work though...I can NEVER lie as its written all over my face...literally! My mom used to take one look at me and ground me immediately and she wouldn't even know what I'd done! lol I think I spent most of my teen years in solitary confinement....sighhhhhhhh

Good Morning Scarlett! Oh I can pull off an innocent look when I want to...but the mischevious smile gives it away damnit...I'm practising I promise! hehe

All my friends laugh at me because when we talk, they can never remember what the original conversation was about because I go off on so many tangents! Ohh and by the way..I drive just like I talk so be aware if you see me on the streets!

I will be totally honest...You are one of the reasons that I started posting on QL...You, Gypsy, DaRuDe, jauntie, Azzie and all the others that are just full of fun. I have to thank you all for keeping me sane (?) during this past week. Y'all caught my attention with all your razzing each other and it made me want to join in and become part of the QL group. Yeah there are arguments, but what family doesn't have tiffs??

Now, we need to deal with your crying while laughing..I can send you box of tissues, but consider this..at least you didn't wee yourself..but if you do, I'll personally go get you some Depends.

and on that note..I better go to bed as I get really strange when I'm tired..

hijacking is a bit harsh - conversations go off at tangents.. thats normal...

who wants perscriptive interaction???? I don't even want that in a conversation class.

scarlett you are a charm and spontaneous input is great

jauntie's quips crack me up

sl's dry humour just makes me laugh - loved his hate list

i cried myself laughing today... check for the thread

You got it girl. I will let you know when I get back to Doha. Hopefully it will be soon. Kind of miss my hubby and I so enjoyed my time in Doha. I love the expat life so much.

I hired a driver when I was there. No way was I even going to attempt to try and find my way around. The driver is better to have, especially in the evening so you don't have to worry about who is driving home :D.

I almost had a mint julep last weekend at Pat O'Briens but decided on a hurricane instead - well two hurricanes actually. Spent the weekend with friends from Houston in the French Quarter. If you get back to the states before I get to Doha and you are in the area contact me. I will let you know my plans as soon as I know them.

Take care. Off to do errands now. I have been lazy enough for one day. The rain just stopped here - typical summertime thunder storm just blew through.

You better get in touch with me when you get here...I'll show you around..or to be honest with you, we can get lost together because my sense of direction is really bad..hubby calls me directionally challenged.

Pure coon-a** girl here. Lived in the Houston and Beaumont area for quite a while. I will be back there after Doha. I can't wait!! In Louisiana now - LSU country. It's been fun to be back near home - born and raised in New Orleans, but ready to head back to Texas.

PM me anytime. I was going to PM you as well but I thought you might think the same about me. After all we are "southern ladies", and I do use that term lightly!! LOL.

back here this summer! I was just about to PM you, but thought you'd think I was trying to hit on you..hehehe...and ask when you'd be in Doha full time. Let's get a fishing trip up sometime this fall if you are here...I bet we'd have some takers and could get a good sized boat together....

So..are you from Texas or just lived there? Me, born and raised there..but I keep traveling just so I really enjoy going back.

Since you already hijacked your own thread (ha,ha). Fishing is one of my favorite pastimes as well. When I visited Doha recently my husband took me out to the Al Wakra area and we just fished off the shore. If you get the Qatar Marhaba book there is information in there for fishing as well. You can book a fishing charter.

I am trying to get back to Doha some time this summer and hope to do a little deep sea fishing this time. DaRude may be right though, it may be too hot. Oh well, I would give a shot anyway. I could always come home with a story about the one that got away.

awful about hijacking posts (actually I've never heard this term before..like everything else in Qatar, its new to me!). I was just having a good time running my mouth as usual.

Wish I had been here for the Dhow trip..that one sounded like such a good time! Please tell me y'all will do that again!(but not until after Oct 11, please!!!!)

I hope you don't mind my asking, where the hell do you get ginger beer? Looked all over for it! My feelings are similar to yours but if we had to post a new subject evertime we wanted to pop in a quick querie, the topic list would be full of really boring stuff like where do you get ginger beer. I too looked at QL from the UK, I don't remember all the bickering, perhaps I brought it with me from the discontented land..........

I admit I've been a loose cannon lately and lost my cool reserve these past few days. Hijacking threads have been rampant but mostly for fun, sort of an invisible bond between faceless people in the net.

No worries, Scarlett...you can hijack our group's (Filipino Expats) threads anytime, you're more than welcome.

Jauntie, my buddy...sorry i missed your company twice in a row. The dhow trip, I was sick and Mr. Paul's do...I won't miss the next one...cheers!!!

Don't worry Scarlett, you are not the first and will not be the last. It seem to happen in the Qatar Living forum more then any of the others.

Jauntie is right. I found QL by googling Qatar schools and I found this sight. If all I had found was bickering and guys trying to pick up women - I don't think I would have come back to it. It has been a big help. I have read so many of the threads and come back all the time to read more - informative and very entertaining. I hope to get there soon so I can join the Social Group. There are some very interesting people here that I would love to meet in person. I love meeting people from different places, cultures, etc. We have been expats on and off for many, many years.

Nice to see another "Southern Bell" on the sight. I am not in Doha yet. My husband is there and I will get there eventually.

Take care and enjoy your time in Doha.

Is that I can't see a problem with going off topic if the thread is a light one, such as Paul arranging a social get-together or someone putting up a joke for everyone to have a go at or add to etc.

I think the problem is if someone has started a serious thread, which requires a discussion or even an answer to a query they have (if it doesn't fit in the more serious forums), then by hijacking it kind of kills the thread and serves no purpose.

Speaking as someone who found this site when in the UK, before coming over to Doha, I typed into google a question about, say, sports clubs in Doha and found a thread in QL. It was informative, but I wonder what I would have thought of the site had the thread suddenly disintegrated in people gossiping and heresay and bickering? For a start I would never had seen some of the REAL info I was looking for and given up, as probably would have the person who posted the question in the first place expecting some knowledge to be imparted!

OK - am going to have a ciggie and down a ginger beer now lol

Me too do this at times. Not a big deal...don't feel bad... at least this thread we can hijack without feeling guilty.
