Hong Kong

I need helpful travel tips. I'm taking my son to Hong Kong on his 7th Birthday in January and I have a few questions.

I have a reservation at Meridien Cyberport, how far is the Cyberport to Disneyland? Is there a bus or train from Cyberport to Disneyland Resort? How much do i need for transportation? Is it advisable or better to buy tickets online?

Aside from Disneyland, what are the pretty amazing places that my son will surely enjoy? Do not include malls since we're not interested with shopping.

How is Hong Kong treating tourist? I have been to Shanghai and some Chinese won't even bother talking to you if you ask for directions.

How is the weather if we do beaches? Thanks!

Cheers,
Paul

thank you very much. i grinned when i heard pandas and dolphins. I think watching pandas eat bamboo all day is not a problem. I'm sure my kid will adore them. I used to watch a snake crawl under a rock for 2 hours in Discovery Channel. I'm a fan, you know? Thanks for the restaurant tips. But I'm not sure I'm visiting the vegetarian restaurant. And yeah, admiring restrooms is interesting! I remember the restroom at Ritz Doha beside Al Wosail Hall. And believe me, its really amazing! lol! I'll sure visit Peninsula and try their food. Anyway, i guess i won't do much shopping since my kid gets easily irritated walking in malls. Thanks again! ;o)

arien, where is Doha Travel? they sell tickets for disney?

cheers,

paul

Trains are the best mode.. they r quick and cheap. There is no direct trains, you have to change once. Just google it.

Disney u can buy online or contact Doha Travel , they are the sales agent in Doha

Some list about things to do in Hongkong :)

1/ The Peak - go up there on a clear day during day time, and another time at night. Have dinner at one of the restaurants up there. Try taking the tram up and bus down, or vice versa, for different experiences.

2/ Lantau Island - visit the Big Budha and the Po Lin Temple, enjoy a delicious vegetarian lunch (always get the deluxe lunch because the food is better and it's air-conditioned and less crowded). Then take the bus/taxi to Tai O to see the fishing village. And lastly take bus or taxi to Tung Chung, and from there the MTR back to the city or wherever you're staying. At Tung Chung if you have the time and energy, find a display unit of the new apartments which are for sale and see how much space the locals live in.

3/ Lamma Island - have seafood lunch there and walk from one pier to another (Yung Su Wan to Sok Gu Wan, or vice versa, about 2 hours) to catch the ferry back to Central. This is guaranteed to be one of the most relaxing day.

4/ Ocean Park - a must if you have children. The pandas are fun/boring to watch depending on who you are - they just sit there and eat bamboo all day - I find them cute. The dolphin and seal show is fabulous. And don't miss the aquarium and the shark tank if you like marine life.

5/ Stanley Market - shops are sometimes tourist traps but they are still great fun to visit. Have a lovely pizza at Firenza, and a pint of your favourite draught beer at the waterfront. The bus ride to and from Stanley Market is unforgettable. Try one trip via the Aberdeen tunnel and another going the longer route.

6/ Repulse Bay - go there on a week day and enjoy a good swim. Have a meal at the former Repulse Bay Hotel restaurant. Can't remember the name now though. Again exciting bus trip to and from there.

7/ Temple Street at night to see the stalls and Cantonese operas on the street.

8/ Ladies Street - I'm not a huge fan but it's still worth a visit if you've never been before.

9/ Ap Liu Street - if you are a real geek - this is great for all the electronic components. Fascinating to look even if you're not buying. Lots of the radio equipments are illegal locally but can be exported.

9/ Have a drink/dinner at Felix at the top of the Penisula Hotel in Tsimshatsui, looking over the harbour. Admire their restrooms while you're there whether or not you need to go. You won't regret it. The men's room apparently is more interesting than the ladies'.

10/ Have another drink/dinner at the Island Shangri-La, looking over the harbour.

11/ If you have extra time, hop over to Macau for a day or two. Have a great Portugese meal at Fernando's - their sea bass and prawns are a must if you like seafood. They also make wonderful bread rolls. Visit a casino or two and perhaps win back all your spending. On a second thought you might want to visit Macau first and make some money for all your shopping trips in HK?! HK dollars are widely accepted in Macau, as are credit cards.

12/ Wong Tai Sin temple - a popular place for the locals for all the Chinese festival. I'm not a big fan of crowded and smokey places but this temple is one of the most important ones in HK. Again, you can go there at the start of your stay and ask the fortune teller whether or not it's worth the hassle going to Macau, apart from having a meal at Fernando's.

13/ Antique stores on Hollywood Road - very interesting place if you like old stuff - old furniture, chinaware, paintings, etc.

14/ If you want a suit made, visit one of them in Tsimshatsui. They can custom-make suits and shirts in 3-7 days. The more time you have the better so that you can go in for at least one fitting before picking the suit up or having it delivered to your hotel. Another thing you should do at the start of the trip if you want it done. You can get a suit made for as little as $2000 or as much as twenty times depending on the fabric and the shop. Shirts usually start from about $150 and up. This is not just for men, but for ladies as well.

i experience the same thing when i went to china... shanghai is a nice place but the people are not as warm as other nationalities...

same thing in Hong Kong... i got lost and it took a while before i had someone talk to me and help me find my way back to the hotel... it's not the language barrier... they're just not used to the "hey! how is it goin?" atmosphere... that is with the chinese from mainland, but some people in HK know how to mingle, thanks to the british empire...

i still love hong kong though,

anyway, go to ocean park, victoria peak, avenue of the stars where you can have a good view of HK buildings and a statue of jacky chan...

wish i can go with u, enjoy!

Dont miss the shark's reef at Ocean Park ! Simply amazing :)

Have a nice holiday in Hongkong, be ready with small foldable umbrella or raincoat ... you will need that in this time of the month.

The weather will be quite cool in January, too cool for the beach I think.

But there are loads of other things to see and do.

Disneyland is on Lantau Island, not sure if there is a direct rail link but for sure there will be buses or maybe even a ferry to get you there.

Public transport is very good but taxis can be a bit expensive. Hong Kongers are quite OK but remember not everybody speaks English, if they won't speak to you that is probably the reason.

As in other big cities beware of rip off merchants!

Take the Peak Railway up to Victoria Peak for tremendous views of the harbour and the city.

Try the Planetarium in Tsim Sha Tui, they have scheduled shows simulating a trip into outer space.

Ocean Park is worth a look, it's an amusement park and I think they have a zoo as well. Spend a day at Stanley Market, a great place to buy souvenirs.

Take the ferry (The 'Turbocat') to Macau and spend a day there. When you are done you can go for some real fish & chips at Harry Ramsdens in Wan Chai!
