We feel sorry for you mate, its all about attitude and behaviorism.Aggressive driving came in as the second main perceived cause of motor vehicle collisions, following driver inattention. Stress continues to be cited as the main reason people drive aggressively.Play you part and be a safer driver to all.

When we read such headlines in the paper, we feel sorry for those who lost a loved one and criticize our system. Little do we realize that to change any system, all of us have to make a contribution. The responsibility is collective and we all have to do our bit to make roads safer to drive and for pedestrians. Here are some of the ways I feel can bring positive changes and lessen the number of accidents on Qatari roads -lets speak with one voice for Road Safety for all and save lives.

It's painful to see parents who drive with their children and allow them to not use seat belts. One accident, and they will go straight through the windshield. In Europe and the US they have very strict laws about car seats and boosters for children.

First, get the Qataris to drive like gentlemen, then you'll notice a huge drop in the percentage of road accident related fatalities....

In yesterday's Gulf Times, you will see the picture of a toppled police car that was hammered by a reckless Qatari driver from behind... Assessing the damage on the police car, one can imagine at what speed he was driving...

with increasing population, number of cars on the roads and more road construction work; which subsequently increasing the accident risk. Again with the summer heat, we become more impatient.

I had 3 accidents in a span of 1 month in 2006 and none was my fault. A Qatari young boy was driving a brand new car laughing after he smashed 4 cars in a row at the traffic signal, confirming that this was his second accident in a week with same car.

We all should resolve today and SHOULD drive at the speed of 80 and less to be safe rather feels sorry.

".... was hit by a car from the rear near the Industrial Area petrol station. Both the vehicles overturned by the impact of the collision and the motorists in them were killed on the spot."

They must have been driving too fast. Either one of them, so, they deserve death.

The local who slammed into the police car, was an idiot, probably text-messaging.

This morning a land cruiser passed 5-6 trucks on the emergency lane; the middle and left lane were empty; so why drive on the emergency lane ? What if there was a car on the emergency with a technical problem ?

Then I saw wreck; the left-over of another accident that must have happened overnight.

I have seen only one traffic police car during my commute.

Other than that, another 'normal' drive to work.

Having been hit by a L/C two weeks ago while stationry, I have realized it doesn't mater how well you drive, here you are going to get shunted anyway. I consider myself a good driver. I have nearly 30 years experience and undertook training with the UK traffic police for advanced driving skills. Yet in my 3 years here I have had to file 4 accident reports and that is even with my extra training looking out for potential dangers.

While trying to figure out what is the difference between driving here and back home in the UK is, I am starting to believe that apart from licenses being issued for a very low standard of driving here, the main danger can be attributed to one thing 'AROGANCE'.

Oh and did anyone else read that after this horrendous accident, the emergency services got smashed into while they were attending it.

Two expatriate men were killed and a Qatari injured in two road accidents at the same spot yesterday morning. The first accident took place when a car heading from Salwa Road to the Industrial Area was hit by a car from the rear near the Industrial Area petrol station. Both the vehicles overturned by the impact of the collision and the motorists in them were killed on the spot. As the Traffic Police patrol was investigating the accident, a car driven by a local crashed into the police vehicle. The motorist, who was injured, was taken to the Hamad Hospital. Both the vehicles were damaged.

Dear Marcos thanks for bringing up such n important issue; I would like to add that though we can't change the behavior of all these reckless drivers what we can do is to practice defensive driving (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defensive_driving) and pray to god before starting our journey,,,

by the way karwa has a course in defensive driving techniques...-:)

Yes..Audubillah. I know what kinda people you mean. And inevitably even when such folks meet with accidents that they brought upon themselves, the fault is always assumed to be of the motorists.

I always say it's a recipe for disaster: a country overrun by both reckless, daredevil drivers and careless pedestrians!

This could be some pedestrians trying to cross the road in traffic. I almost had an accident trying to save a stupid family who were literally standing on the fastest lane just after the signal crossing.

The signal was green and I crossed it well under 80km/h and saw this family standing in the first lane..had to dangerously steer right to save them. I am glad that Allah saved them and myself from any accident but Allah forbid if there was an accident then I am sure someone on QL would have created a thread "lunatic mercedes driver killed an innocent family" with gruesome pictures.

Somebody seriously need to educate slow drivers and pedestrians about traffic rules and the dangers of blocking fast lane.

As to those who speed, yet try to master all the radar spots, they kinda remind me of what we tell lil kids. "Even if mom and dad can't see ya God still can" just substitute radars and cops for mom and dad! Sooner or later they may have to pay a high price for their folly and foolish pride, yet sadly so will some innocents, God have mercy on us all!

Fathima/drsam, With all the mobile units placed on highways recently, expats like you and me would never dare to overspeed. Its only the people who have enough money with them to pay the fines or have a clout with the authorities to get away rubbing their noses, would overspeed.

I take the Salwa road to my office everyday and observe the trend these days. Its mostly the landcruisers and the mercs that race past me. You know whome am I talking about..

See, I think driving fast, generally, is not the problem. If you are on a proper highway, there is no traffic, and drivers are generally knowledgeable .

But, this is Qatar, most people have no idea how to drive, no idea about or interest in traffic rules, traffic is thick and heavy...so driving fast is lethal....for the driver and those around him.
