They installed the equipment in my house back in November. (I never arranged it, they just showed up) Then, they finally connected and activated their end just a couple weeks ago in mid-March.

I got 2 questions for you.

When did Qtel installed the fiber unit in your household, and how long did it take to be activated?

Just an update, I managed to hit 13.2MB/s download once this weekend on the 100Mb Fiber. I am guessing there is some overhead bandwidth availability.

While it is amazingly quick, I will probably downgrade the speed. Its just too expensive (650QAR / month) for what it is. I will probably go down to the 10Mb package.

Don't get hyped up with 4G. Our speeds are way below tfor the current 3g standards.

For those seeing slow YouTube speeds, I read somewhere that they throttle Torrents, YouTube streaming, and a couple other things during "peak traffic hours" to keep bandwidth available for everyone.

I am too lazy to go look it up again.

They are introducing a new product - a faster internet connection - so they have to do something to slow down your current one, otherwise no one will patronize the new product. Sah?

Anyone know when LTE (4G) is getting rolled out? I saw a press clip stating it will happen before end of 2011 but I dont think its live is it?

Terrible, I can't even get Youtube and I have the highest package. Qtel blames my modem, the employer (who is paying for it) blames Qtel.

Is this information on a website somewhere?

For online gaming, I connect to a server in Amsterdam. On the old 4Mb ADSL I would see latency around 350ms. With the new 100Mb Fiber I am seeing about 180ms.

For single point to point connectivity (SpeedTest.net) I do not see anywhere near the advertised speeds outside of Doha. Though using Torrent clients, you can get get pretty close to it because you are connecting to multiple clients.

Jhopp,

I am shocked that you can even download at such speeds. They are definitely making some progress. Have you played online games? Any thoughts on the ping response?

Most people are confused by internet speeds. Some think if they get a 4Mb (Mega-bit) line from their service provider, they should see 4MB (mega-byte) downloads which is not accurate at all. Keeping mindful there are 8 bits per byte, you can see the max download speed you should have on a 4Mb ADSL Q-tel line is about 0.5MB per second (500kB per second). This was the exact speed I had for the last couple years.

I recently was upgraded to Q-Tel Fiber Optic and am trying out the 100Mb package. Theoretical max download speed should be 12.5MB/s, but the best I have seen yet is around 9.5MB/s.
