Why is 'W' pronounced 'Double U' when in fact it looks like 'Double V'?

we have to control our thoughts or may end up thinking about what others might be thinking hence eliminating our own thoughts completely. huh!

Strange but true in my language (Tagalog), W is pronounce as Wa.  It does not even relate to double U or double V. Sorry speedysid I change your topic from English to Tagalog.

esper is right. "w" is pronouced double "v" in france. beside, "w" is read in german as "v". so mark weber is pronouced veber.

I think cherukkan's thought seems more reasonable.

It is from this ‹uu› digraph that the modern name "double U" derives.

(Check Wikipedia if you have doubt)

Seems so too.. but food for thought, isn't it?

Wonder whether we're actually writing the correct things!

Speedysid, When you are typing, it looks like double V but my guess is that it was written (hand writing) earlier like double U which gradually got the present look of double V.
