Kuwait police accused of torturing man to death

KUWAIT CITY - Kuwait's interior ministry said on Monday an internal probe has found that six policemen were involved in torturing a man to death at a police station and referred them to a judicial inquiry.

"Three more policemen have been referred to the public prosecution besides the three who had already been referred," said the interior ministry.

The man, Mohammed Ghazzai al-Mutairi, died on January 11 on arrival at hospital from a police station with his legs and hands tied and bruises all over his body, opposition MPs said.

A medical report showed he had died of torture.

Parliament last Wednesday formed an investigation committee to probe the case following a stormy debate at which several MPs called on the interior minister to resign.

Interior Minister Sheikh Jaber Khaled al-Sabah, a member of the ruling family, submitted his resignation the next day after the ministry said there was criminal suspicion behind the death.

But the cabinet asked him to stay on in his post to follow up with the investigation, a move which angered opposition MPs who have vowed to file to question him in parliament unless he steps down.

Hundreds of Kuwaitis staged a gathering on Monday to press the government to accept the minister's resignation.

Meanwhile, two lawyers from a legal team defending the policemen said they have withdrawn after the policemen had confessed to torturing the man to death without any reason.

Initially, the interior ministry had said Mutairi was an alcohol smuggler arrested red-handed with 24 bottles of whisky, but the ministry acknowledged on Monday that the claims were false.

Joe,

They have already passed through that stage. During the invasion some of them did disguise like Indians or Bangladeshis, stood in a mile long que to buy dry Kubus ( bread) and lived a life worse their servants.

Now Abuse of maids is back in full force, you visit any asian embassy and will find hundreds of maids taking shelter and in hiding each one with a horrible story fit for a novel.

Do they still do that after the bad experience they had been through after the visit from their neighbours. Will they never learn that all this abuses, maltreatment of workers, etc will come back to haunt them someday and this time around nobody might be willing to listen to their sob stories

Not at all surprising.

The country is still in stone age, and torture and deaths of maids if published will hit the Guinness book of records.
