A message from Qatar Living

ahmad
By ahmad

Over the last few days it seems that instead of facilitating discussions and conversations, Qatar Living has become the conversation.

We just want to point out that Qatar Living is not for or against anyone. It is a website dedicated to helping people make the most out of living in Qatar. From finding the best restaurants to selling your car, from helping people volunteer to organizing social events, Qatar Living is designed to be a place where everyone can feel comfortable and welcome.

Of course, with over 150,000 members and 500,000 people visiting each month, there are bound to be disagreements. And unfortunately, like everywhere on the internet, there are bound to be a small number of people who make comments that are offensive. It is unfair for these comments to generalize and stereotype people.

In the same manner, the objectionable comments by a number of individuals should not be seen as indicative of most of the Qatari's and Expatriates who make up the Qatar Living community. We use our Community Guidelines to clearly indicate what is acceptable on our website. We do apologise if any users have fallen short of these guidelines - we aim to treat every member of this community with respect and dignity.

If you do believe that there has been violation of these guidelines, please use our contact form to report abuse. As any material posted is not endorsed, reviewed or approved by Qatar Living, we rely on you to flag community violations.

Dear Ingsu,

We have asked you politely to remove the posts as they are in violation of the community guidelines. We have offered to provide you with proof that the mother wishes these posts removed so that our out of court settlement may proceed. We understand your desire to be part of this situation, but please understand that is a private matter that was wrongly publicized in an effort to intimidate and harass us. That period has passed and now your posts are simply an obstacle to the mother being reunited. Please do the right thing.

Kind regards,

The bio father.

Apparently some of my posts have upset some people (ohhhhh really????) I wonder why if they just state the true! O.o

I have read the guidelines and I do not see the violation on blah blah blah. However one of my answers got repeated hundred times ... ok, I exagerate, but like about five times, for computer misterious manipulations.

I am not against any school / people. I just said what was happening. It is over now (In Qatar) but the children are still not reunited with their mother.

Please acept my apologies for disturbing the website and feel free to eliminate four of the five answers.

Best best wishes and keep the good work up, YOU ARE AMAZING GUYS and I would have killed myself if QL did not exist when I was living in Doha,

God bless!

Glad to see i'm not the only one who thinks the purpose of Online communities is to escape oppression and truly have a free platform for discussion; no matter how intense it may be. I mean seriously, ever since the Mohamed drawing by that dutch guy, freedom of speech has taken a toll. As a matter of fact, you remember the french guy who used to run Doha Freedom Center, well he resigned (willingly... maybe) few days after he sent invitation to that danish painter who made the drawing and that painter was actualy in Doha! Not kidding, they actually took pictures of him and published it in newspapers. Double standards make me sick!

anyway, a constant reminder will do the trick. And Mods are doing that! Everyone thinks before they post, but the problem lies on the condition of the poster at the time of posting. Is there anyone here who is always is good condition 100% 24/7?

Do we expect no mistakes or always "good and nice" posts all throughout the year? Just obey the "golden rule"!

All I can say is 'let's see'.

The argument that QL is 'too big' isn't an excuse in my opinion. Some members here have suggested some very good ideas to help QL become a better community.

The irony is that now people on QL are saying "We shouldn't be generalized" when that's what's been happening on QL towards Qataris for a while now...

My advice? Focus on being better people rather than caring what other people are doing and the world will be a better place. (I hope).

People like it when things go out of line. No one watches Jerry Springer to see a separated couple get back together, they wanna see 'em butt-naked beating each other with their own genitalia.

I say we quit this act of "Oh let's keep things clean, we don't wanna hurt people's feelings" and all the other bs. The only reason this site has survived this long is because of Traffic & user hits, generated by the same people you all claim to "hate" for being hurtful. Her posts makes sense. It didn't come up to the point that the majority of those who 'felt' offended and probably imbecile, because PM may be logically true, has won the day?

One controversial thread doesn't make up to the valid points she makes in almost all of her comments.

So we always have to make up for the major illogical people that 'sweeps' this website and give the QL guidelines or abuse form as a 'viable' reason to oust someone that has a voice to show the other reality of Qatar what plenty of us cannot speak out of fear of being kicked out in this country?

And you call yourselves 'being respected' when one's opinion of an eye-opener may probably prove (through your replies) that you easily think she 'generalizes' people? Your replies only makes it obvious that she was right...unless you know how you can tolerate or counteract intelligently (I admire Bleu on this one), and that makes one nice good apple among 10-15 other bad apples. This website needs a moderator that is online 24/7 or at least 2 that alternate, maybe the members should nominate someone that is a positive contributor and that can remain somewhat neutral at all times.

A lot of members misbehave and so the suggestion that we as adults should be able to 'moderate' our posts is thrown out of the window.

There are a lot of blatant negative posts all over the place, I was reading the guide to Qatari weddings and I found a lot of offensive remarks that make me wonder whether the moderators are overlooking them or simply failed to keep up with all the rubbish that is being posted.

(link found in Mr. Google's post above) notices the irony that in demanding the closure of QL because some expats have insulted and stereotyped Qataris in their posts, she is insulting and stereotyping ALL of us as being of the same mind as those few errant individuals.

She writes:

"Many of the expatriates on this website (not all of them but most of them) use bad language when talking about Qatari people."

"Most of them"? Really?

Hmmm...if QL has 150,000 members...

Pot. Kettle. Black.

But I digress...

Great suggestions by bleu above.

But when I see a thread whose title is "Shameful Qatari tradition.....", I do not understand how such a thread is still alive and kicking. Personally I find it a call to destroy the society, dis-obey the parents, and most important violating the religion.

More Moderators is the need of QL, also Admins can consider moving QL to a more userfriendly forums like IP Board or VBulletin that has more features.

This is just another one, many members have left QL because of few of the members who have not been moderated and allowed to spread hatred against Qataris and sometimes even against the state religion.

Either Admins/Moderators should moderate QL properly and keep track of its members to behave, respect and discuss constructively about Qatar, or shut the site down if they can't do it.

Qatar Living has become an institution in Qatar. All the people I know who come here to work soon learn about it, and in the 4 years I've been here I've used it to find information, try out restaurants, buy a phone and sell a couple of cars. The problem with a lot of people these days is that they see free sites like this on the internet as having no value - because they don't pay to use them - and so feel it's OK to abuse any rules set by the organisers. We, the users, have an equal responsibility to police the sites that we use and wouldn't want to see disappear, in the same way we have a right and responsibility to protect the neighbourhoods we live in. It's up to us as much as the moderators to identify abuse and do something about it. If we don't then we can say goodbye to all the good things that QL provides the Qatar community.

Maybe a need to start a new forum

'Rubbish Journalism'

Their written English is horrible and their reporting standards are slack.

Lesson 1

Opinion Vs Fact

Opinion - a view expressed by an individual

Fact - something that is proven

Quantify opinions which such adjectives as, minority, overwhelming etc to give perspective

In my opinion, the problem is not coming from members side. Rather it is coming from the way this site is moderated. It has been noticed that double standards are applied. Some members are escaping with major and criticial violations. While others are kicked out for silly reasons.

The result of such biased moderations is the current reputation of QL.

I am afraid everybody knows the guidelines. The issue is about moderating the threads in general and the comments in particular. I know it is a huge effort, but by kicking out the members who ignore the guidlines will have everybody or most of the members abide by the guidelines.

Good to state the guidelines and purpose of this website as a thread (2nd paragraph refers).

If the comments cannot be monitored by the MODS, which is quite understood, at least the post itself can be monitored and deleted if it does not fall under any of the above said criteria at once. While deleting just leave a comment for deleting so that the same may not get repeated, which will help reduce the work of the MODS over a period of time.

Great suggestions bleu.

If I may add;

To avoid the "fly by night" members, which malicously participate in the discussion. The QL can add to their community guidelines that new users can only participate or post a topic after 48 hours of membership.

Ahmad,

I have a few suggestions... Shouldn't be too hard to implement with drupal/php/mysql.

Suggestion 1: Add a "report abuse" link to all posts (near "reply"), it should automatically link to the post, and poster...

Suggestion 2: Add an admin feature to put some users (all new users for the first week, and and abusive users) "under moderation"... They would think that what they typed was posted, but they're the only ones to see them until a mod approves the post.

Suggestion 3: Allow some of the users to be moderators. You know your users and you would know who to choose. They would still be transparent moderators as they shouldn't divulge their identity while moderating.

"Of course, with over 150,000 members and 500,000 people visiting each month,... "

whew!!

if i may qoute QL G/L No. 2,

"Do not create topics or posts that criticise, bully or insult other Qatar Living members, and do not flame (e.g. provoke other Qatar Living member into arguments) or impersonate other people. If you wish to make a complaint against another Qatar Living member, please use the "Report Abuse" form on the Contact page."

... users who find posting/s offensives must report it to admin. is there active reporting happening lately?

and how many Mods does QL have?

OR is the MODs proportion to current QLers traffic getting out of bounds?

if no one reports, and Mods are not enough to police the threads 24/7...

where will that leads?

i think, a never ending bashing and trashing here and there. imagine someone even opening a thread to bash this or that at a scheduled day!!

what does the Mods Say??

Few rotten oranges can rotten the whole boat load. We were all labelled racists by the Local community today. QL needs to be moderated better.

thank you dear Ahmad.

I just hope you consider re-defining QL, it's getting more attention from the public media and some other online blog sites, not only for being informative, actually not at all for being informative, only for the opinions of the QLers.

Regards

Yalla!
