monthly salaries livein maids increased? Why?
Not sure guys but it seems a lot more than what I have been told by my friens who have maids who pay their maids anywhere from 800 to 1200 QR per month (Philippines and Indonesian)
I have enquired about two available maids and both happen to be Sri lanken but both coincidentally asking 2000 which I think is quite a bit of a diff from what all my friends and neighbours are paying their maids!
Have the salaries gone up for Sri Lankan maids
.
If so is it cos of the recent ban on phillipine maids?
Any thoughts?
Thanks guys

No country has a monopoly on mistreatment I guess. From what I've been told maids find HK alluring because its culturally nearer, and geographically nearer, to their own home.
And there remains the chance that maids, like other foreign workers, may eventually be granted permanent residency there, whereas there is no chance of that ever happening here.
1,800...Thursday evening and Fridays off....holidays when we holiday...flight home every year!!!!
gave me two reasons for leaving;
1) None of them got over $400
2) One of the RP stipulations are that they are NOT allowed to work for any one else EXCEPT the family that holds there visa.... yet many were lent out to other family members and friends illegally...
It would seem like the orient aren't too worried about human rights or labour laws either...
The monthly minimum wage for all foreign maids in Hong Kong, including obviously Filipinas, was raised on Sept 20 last year to 3920 Hong Kong Dollars per month.
If the employer does not provide food for the maid, then a food allowance of HK$875 is also applicable.
That's over $600 per month as far as I can tell. 1200 riyals works out to be about half that figure.
Maids get the same amount in Hong Kong as they should get here... about $400.
In the last 2 years I have interviewed over 300 filipinas for our companies cleaning division and all those that worked in Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore, UAE, Kuwait, Saudi, all say the same thing - approx $400 - infact one of the girls was only getting the equivalent of $130, and wasn't allowed out of the house alone or on her off day.
What people tend to forget, that QR1,400 may not be alot to you, but to a filipina maid, its about Ps15,000, which I might tell is you more than the teacher we recently hired for our Chairman was getting actually teaching in the Philipinnes - She had a Master's Degree in Mathematics. She was only earning Ps12,000.
Another thing to remember is what you are giving her that isn't taken into account.
An extra:
QR300 - accomodation (thats a smaller amount than if you actually worked it out according to how many people in the house and dividing it proportionatly.
QR50 - utilities
QR50 - internet (if she has permanent access to wireless, again according to the number of people in the house.
QR500 - Food (minimum)
Thats another QR850 on top of what she gets paid...
Some people pay clothing and toiletries too.
Knowing what things cost in the Philss, these girls families live good lives when their loved one comes over here, even if they are only earning about QR800 (Ps10,000).
One of our staff that used to work for us at the farm build 3 family homes back in Nepal on the salary we paid him here - when the houses were finished he decided to go back home - 5 years later, he went home relatively well off.
I don't even own a piece of land and battle to come out monthly on my salary!
BobbPenn, it will be considerably more expensive, as this person has to take care of her own accommodation, food and all other stuff.. Salaries of such babysitters are at very least QAR20-25 per hour, plus transportation to and from work. To pick up from school, she has to have a driver's license and a car, unless you have a private driver, or your school is across the street from your house..
Thanks for these posts guys
I honestly don't mind paying more
And I am not the kind who leaves the maid at home and would go out separately for a nice dinner or goes away for hols and has her sitting at home
I also feel if u want someone to look after your home as her home you need to treat as such
I just thought it was strange both Sri Lankan both asking the same and tcomelltly diff parts of town
So was looking for advice
Thanks again
with your maid is not a bad idea,u increased their salary because you think they deserved it,most of the filipina wants to work with europeans coz they pay well and treat their maid good.
gctodoha: 1800QR month, Friday and Saturdays off, one month's paid vacation and airfare per year scheduled when she wishes. Honestly.
Mandi
Can a maid be hired for half time, like pick the kids from school and be with them till the parents come home, maybe do some stuff in the house, for about 5-6 hours a day? Would it be considerably cheaper?
I'd say, reasonable salary for the maid is about 1200-1400. Keep in mind, you also provide her with the accommodation, food, transportation if required, and I am sure with all other basic - and not so basic - things.. I personally don't have live-in maid (I have a cleaning lady), but some of my friends also buy clothes to their maids, and give them some gifts, and also send a lot of gifts to their families, when the maids go back home for vacation.. So basically, cash that you pay every month goes directly to savings..
Thanks guys for being so amazingly judgemental...wondering exactly where each one of u is from but then I would be no diff in stereo typing you
U do not know how much I give every month
How much extra we give to the maintenance people and to the gardener s who tend our place ...not that we need to cos they earn thier meager slaries but we still do cos its not right the differnces in this country so every opportunty we get we do...
and NO we do not live in a fancy compund cos we do not get a huge salary
Ad I would never expect anyone to take care of my kids ...they are Gods gift to me and I love them to pieces
My kids respect people and we have thought them that from a very young age
But I have developed a back problem and was thinking of getting help
I never said that ithat amount is too much
I said it is very diff from what people who already have maids say - so just wanted to make sure in case I was being taken for a ride as we have only been here 5 months
Very disappointing to get these kinda responses when you are looking for advice
Now all u judgemental people I would like you to all respond with what you honestly pay your maid or know of someone who has a maid
Average wage in Sri Lanka for skilled factory workers and service workers is about $75.00 per month.
http://www.wageindicator.org/main/minimum-wages/sri-lanka
http://www.salary.lk/home/salary/minimum-wage
the maid salary is maximum 1200 QR
she works for 16 hours aday that means 60 days in 1 month
that means actual for her effort is 600 QR per month
600/30=20 QR per day... i think these poor maids are getting the lowest salaries in the world.
then we have somebody wondering why their salaries has increased.
c'mon...skip one of your monthly visit to a restaurant and pay this extra 100QR or whatever..
Maids are essential.
So are laundries, shops that deliver, tea boys, car washes, and barbers to give men a shave.
pay LEGAL wages. The law states you must pay Filipino's 400 USD. That's to start with, most experienced maids make more. Again, if you can't pay a DECENT wage, then don't get a maid. period.
QR800 per month for a live-in maid might aswell be called slavery. If you don't want to pay a fair and decent wage then why not try looking after your own kids and cleaning your own house? No - didn't think so.
having a maid is essential and just think about it they work in your house everyday,in my opinion salary increase will depends on experience and work performance and at least a starting salary of 300USD or QR.1200.
and also because the law states that Filipino maids must make 400 USD. Other nationalities are following suit. If you can't pay that much, then don't get a maid. ( deleted by mod)
Because maids can earn lots more in places like Hong Kong. The only way to get them to come to Qatar was to increase their salaries.
and how much is your salary ? :P
Maybe they have something more special then the other nationalities just like their guys but I for one am still wondering what it is that they have that makes them so different from the rest. For certain it is not their work or honesty
