Most westerners treat their maids justly with respect to the working hours and salary.

Experienced maids usually prefers American,Danish and would avoid British and rarely Canadian.

Arabs are the last option-Lebanese, Syrian and Qatari as they are required to serve their employers until wee hours, sometimes forced to work in relatives' house.

Yes - we do agree some locals r good. From my own experience, I think that Qataris and Emaratis r better compared to the Arabs of other states.(Ther may b exceptions - we shuld not deny that)

However - IT IS very HARD TO HEAR SOMEONE SAYING THAT HE WANT TO WORK WITH AN ARAB EMPLOYER IN ANY ARAB STATE (except 1 out of 100 or 1000!!).

We heard the stories of Nailing the maids,Forcing them to Swallow nails,Canning,Putting Cigerate butts to Genital parts etc etc..oh my gosh..

We can c all this only in Movies - that too kind of Bondage/BDSM movies.

May Almighty forgive all of us.

people all over the world and this is the problem with generalising.

Perhaps the maid who was not fed did not want that food! I doubt it but it MAY have been the case.

Not been here long but because of my job I know quite a few locals and they always 'seem' good to their maids/helpers.

Unfortunately I know a British woman who is a complete and utter *itch to her maid. Her maid is such a sweet lovely woman and I know would never come the 'sob story' that some can come out with.

Some maids do take the mickey and some don't.

Abuse of anybody is wrong. If the work is not done to your expectations; sack that person. Don't make their life hell.

There are lots of people here who are in jobs they can't do. They don't deserve abuse but neither do they deserve that job.

one_shot, we can not generalized as in every forest there are always different species :(..

i faced the same story , and it is really bad to see something like this.

but i can't generalize because yesterday in Hayyat Plaza.

i saw a mother with 3 cute kids, and the maid was sitting and eating with them.

and the mother was making the order not her maid.

of this employer/employee:

lastweek, myself and my family went for a dinner to Ponderosa. We seen 1 table with husband, wife, 3 children enjoying their meal, while the nanny was sitting

a little distance and no plate/food infront of her.

Oooohh our heart were crying to see her. i have many muslim friends but they are not like that. But that night, really, a muslim people beside our table, were not allowing their nanny to join the buffet.

They can not pay buffet charge for their nanny? then why they need to take her with them?

Where is the brain of the husband? where is the heart of the wife? :( :(...so sad to see scenes like these.

i want to hug u for your perfect words.

well said man , i can't add more.

there is no way to return back , i think.

and all the stories of the glory of arabs and their good manners seem like some kind of fiction when they look at the current us "arabs"

By cruzerboy7• 3 Jan 2011 14:05

Ancient Arabs knows for their hospitality and baton carrier of Islam.

But the Arabs of current world appears to be just morethan a savage beast.

Sometime - we feel ashamed to say tht we are Muslims when other non-Muslims talk about how the Arabs are treating human beings in their country.

ISLAM taught to pay the employee before his sweat dries and treat the employee above par.

But it is sad to see the things happening like this.

and you think that the abuses of one places like Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib, justify the horrors within your own cultures.

it's an observation of fact in these parts and has a lot more to do with prevailing attitudes towards class (and racist ARAB attitudes towards Asians) than elitism. BTW, you are the first Syrian I knew here in Qatar who feels he is elite. Most readily admit they are not, but have no other options with teh state Syria is in.

why when i hear about abusing i remember abo guraib and guantanamo

in your house, the rule is very simple and straight forward. You pay for the hours they work. If someone is taken advantage of in that situation, they are guilty of being an idiot. If I don't go to work, I don't get paid. This has NOTHING to do with the OP and the abuse of maids.

I dont know about which of these nationalities are the most abusive employer...

but 1 thing is sure...

those who abuse housemaids or fellow human beings are just B45T4RDS, PSYCH05, M3NT4L R3T4RDS and ANIMALS...a human being dont abuse other human beings no matter what...even if he/she is a prisoner.

By anonymous• 2 Jan 2011 22:55

No, never been beaten by a maid nor have my kids.

That is a bit extreme don't you think?

Of course there is abuse, never denied that.

There always will be abuse and always has been abuse of help/servants/maids in houses all over the world.

There has also been abuse by the maids/servants etc' even when they have been looked after.

In fact your point makes a very good point...why would any normal person beat a kid or an employee?

By anonymous• 2 Jan 2011 22:48

I think the problem we have is this; when we come over and employ a maid more often than not we are fed bulls*it and we feel sorry for them.

There is ALWAYS a story attached to why they want to come and work in your house etc.

We believe it; as we feel sorry for them, they are from a third world country and all that.

Then they start to work for you and all is well.

For me I paid them above the going rate, fed her and bought her stuff and then; they miss when they are supposed to come. Text you three hours after they were due and then they don't even bother with a text; they just don't turn up at all until is is pay day and then come hell or high water they are there!

I am NOT saying for one moment they should be abused at all. That is so wrong but come on help yourselves a bit.

Don't take on jobs you can't do and then expext to be paid.

We can sniff out lies eventually.

Raped? These are the kinds of abuses that go on fairly frequently here and no amount of defensiveness pointing out the occasional abuse of an employer's good will make up for it.

Saudis definitely on no1

Egyptians on no2

Qataries on no3

and the rest are not that important ...

I suppose all of them (including the ones you have selectively not mentioned) fall in the same category. Their wives should count themselves lucky as if the maids were not around then they would have been the ones at the receiving end of this abuses and maltreatment.

employees have been abused by their maids?

But I also read a lot of cases involving Lebanese and other Arabs. From personal experience it would seem that Qataris are not often abusive to their maids but that could just be personal experience. It speaks volumes that most maids want to be employed by Westerners.
