Hi Everybody

I have been reading the posts here and I find it very resourceful.

I just got the news that my Visa has been approved and I would be in Qatar hopefully by January.

All the pictures are of me, including the one of the sand-yacht. I no longer have the whiskers. I don't have a problem with pork as living in Turkey the neighbours hunt wild boar.

I'm sure there are pictures of me on this site.

Have just checked and there are pics. Maybe I should remove them

oh asangab cant help you there.

i had posted a message before, it got timed out.sorry

you will have to scout around for places once you are here.

you can check with the real estates and take a look at furnished studio flats. wait out for some time for rents to come down before you get your family here.if your wife is working back home let her continue....because this place is not getting any cheaper.get a feel for this place after you are here and take the next step.

I see how desparate you are. Have you tried body painting the pig as a dog and passing through the customs?

Han19, How many Charactors does Dweller have. I have seen his posts and each with different face. Have you tried bringing this man to his genuine identity.

Sorry............bringing a pig has already been tried.

Customs didn't believe it was a dog even though it had a dog collar.

The whole pig means spare ribs, pork chops, bacon, ham.......lots of meals

Hmmm- which personality is coming out today?

I see that you miss bacon a lot. What if I bring a Pig instead.

Bring bacon, lots and lots of bacon to share with all.

No do not do this unless you are an experienced smuggler. Just being self serving.

Thanks a lot Dweller, Han19 and JJMB

You seem to be having lot of experiance.

I've been used to be waiting with the smile and its quite similar here as well.

I've been looking at the clasifieds here and I see that there are people who are willing to sell their Laptops for a reasonable price. I thought that I could buy such a one when I am there.

Han19, My rent allowance is only 3,500 (I regret that I couldn't join this forum before agreeing to the offer in last April). What I'm thinking is that to rent a flat and share it with someone till my family arrives. So I think I can go up to about 4,500 - 5,000. Do you think I can find a place for that amount closer to Grand Hamad Street.

I'd recommend that you bring your own laptop and anything else you think you'll need. When you get here, you'll be dealing with a new culture, new place, etc. It sounds like you also need to find a place to live and a used car to buy. The last thing you'd want to do is to go shopping for a laptop, or anything else for that matter.

I also wish I'd brought more winter clothes. It's been raining quite a bit and the weather has gotten quite chilly. Check out http://www.thepeninsulaqatar.com/ to obtain weather forecast and plan appropriately.

how much are they paying you for rent?

getting a place is diffcult here........very expensive.

you will have to look around....check the local dailies.figures go upto 5000-7000qrs for a 2bhk.

are you looking for a big car or small one. toyota has got an excellant resale here.....most go for toyota corolla..i think its around 55-65k.anyone have other figures please correct.

second hand cars are also advertised in the dailies so it wont be a problem for you.

I will be arriving Doha during the first week of January.

My office would be at Grand Hamad Street. What are the areas that you recommand me to hunt for accommodation. ( I would be provided with accommodation for about two weeks by the employer and then I have find of my own).

Again, can any one help me with the car Prices please.

Thanks

hey asangab,

glad u are feeling relieved.

when are u coming here?

regarding the car.......my knowledge is limited but once you are here.......if u pass on your email id...i will try to help you the best way i can.

second hand cars are also good........but i wud suggest take a new one.........no hassles with repairs and services.

once u are comfortable here u can get your family here......not necessary that she may have a job in hand at the time.......bcos its better to be here while trying for a job.

also most employers prefer the candidate to have their visas in order(residence permit) to give the job....so she needs to be here......get her visa formalities sorted out and then getting a job is no pain.........although the market is getting competitive.some places will employ while on visit visa but its a temp job most of the time and only if the visa is a family visa will they consider employing permanent.

drive safe cos someone is waiting for u at home

I am relieved now.

I am thinking of coming alone and bring my family later on (say in about an year or so) when I can find a Job for my wife.

In the mean time, I wish to buy a small car for my personal use. Can you recommand any Make/ Model and the Price of such a car (I understand that the value of a brand new car depriciate by about 15% a year). I don't mind buying a second hand car so that I can buy a new one when my family arrives.

Also, please educate me on what to consider when buying a used car (Insurance, Road permit etc.)

at customs they normally dont stop anyone.

if at all they do, have a prescription handy at all times.......if they suspect the contents of the package they will take it from you, get it checkd and return whatever is left of it back to you after a few days.they will only stop u if u what u have looks suspicious.

normally this does not happen..........so no sweat.people get their meds from back home without any problem. if its any consolation i got a couple of herbal stuff for my personal use last month.

paracetamol and brufen kind of drugs are available over the counter........no hassles.

The last time I visited Qatar (in March) I did not have a Visa attached to my Passport (There is no Embassy of Qatar here) and the Visa was stamped at the Air Port. I think this time also the procedure would be the same.

I understand that there is no need for me to bring a Laptop.

As for Medicine, I was refering to things like Paracitamol, Piriton etc which we can buy here without a precription. Do you have any restrictions at the airport for such items?

If I bring in any Herbal Medicine, how can I convince the Customs people as to the genuineness of such things if they confront me? Are they capable of identifying such things?

We brought out laptop from the states no problem. You can get the electrical adaptors here.(ours was built for international travel) If you are a reader bring Books, lotsa books.

How can I say this delicately ;Gulf Country Citizens tend to be less forgiving towards people of the sub-continent, SO BE PREPARED at the airport.

Bring your Passport with a VISA attach to it. Don't forget your smile in front of Customs agent and Immigration officials.

Bring an umbrella(for the rain) and some kind of special tool to get the sand out of places where you never thought you had places!!!!

oh, and a crash helmet to drive in.

I use skype here and laptops are not expensive you should get one around the price you quote, besides that you can get everything here, remember 85% expat, hence 95% imports.

hello dear asangab.

i see u are coming from sri lanka.

get your personal items that can last u a month, like work clothes and stuff.

rest u can always buy it from here...no sweat.

medicines: if u are on herbal or alternate medications..get them with you....get the prescriptions for allopathic meds also...bcos the same drug may not be avaiable here so u may need to use the prescription to get a fresh pres. from any doctor to give u a similar refill. ther are no homeopaths.ayurveds here..........so anything u use traditionally have it with you when u come here.

i dont know about the laptop....but u do have a good range here to select from.if i get to know anything i shall inform u.

happy heart

I will be using skype for calling home. Do you think that I should bring a Laptop with me ( Costs about US$ 700/- here) or would it be possible for me to buy one for a lesser price
