That sounded like an attack.

It wasn't meant to be.

I can't take it that one religous code can be right.

My babies and everyone elses don't know any books or codes when they are born.

They are the same as people who have lived to an adult age, dut have not seen the books or codes.

They can not therefore be judged by them.

That would be the as just as me kidnaping all of you on this site, locking you up together and saying I will torture anyone who goes against my code.

But not telling you what the code is.

If that is God, and I don't believe it is, then I am doomed.

Be good, we all know what that is.

What more can any god ask for?

Avid once again a grim observation. Should I say the women who are wearing miniskirts are only doing so because the sex crazy culture of the west dictates they show as much skin as possible. Are the men in their lives demanding the dress as sexy as possible so they can show them off? Is it because they were molested as children so they dress this way because the have low self esteem. Disclaimer "Sarcasm"

If you drink you drink, if you eat pork yes you can find your pork. I think a lot of Westerners who come here become very sensitive about such things when they move to the Middle East or Muslim Countries. The same as I have seen some Muslims react to moving to the US. They want to hold on to their culture or comfort things so much so that they become paranoid. They each attack the other culture with ferocity and disrespect without trying to accept that every culture has its good and bad parts.

Are the French people the ones who dictate fashion or is it the fashion industry which is made up of many corporations who answer to their shareholders not the everyday common man. The emperor has new clothes....

I would like to make a suggestion take a deep breathe before you hit the post button.

If you want to have loads of sheep er sorry followers you need a judgement day. You just don't attract the crowds without one. Religion as Marx said is the Opiate of the masses, in days gone by before science, a higher being was the explanation for everything, I image that Tsunami would have raised a few eyebrows 1000 years ago and no doubt that would have been used by which ever religion was quick enough to jump on it.

Nothing wrong with that at all what is quite clearly wrong is going to war over it or killing people becase of it.

In Noori's case as she is here, I agree with a poster above, I very much expect that her male dominated houshold makes her wear the Nikab, because as we all now know there is nothing laid down in the book to make people wear it. Dress with modesty is the pharse used.

Sadly back then fashion was still in its infancy and Paris was yet to discover the catwalk, it was mostly sack cloth and hessian.

Anyway had fashion been more advanced and saying that, society in general then the book could have been more specific. No mini skirts, or boob tubes. I don't mind you drawing pictures just get my right side. If you want to have sex before marriage great just don't tell anyone (hang on that already goes on) Burger King is OK McDonalds is out. H&M yes Benneton NO. Things like that.

But I return to the orginal point, no judgement day you just aint gonna get the numbers to justify the rent on the places of worship.

If they aint scared they aint gonna care.

Anyway I ramble

I have lived on and off in the ME for the past 8 years or I should say I have been living in countries where the majority of the people are Muslim to be more accurate. I don't see anything wrong with people or cultures as a whole changing over time. It is simply an inevitability. Every culture on Earth has changed, to include its dress code, over its existence. Many times in most cases. You cannot blame it only on external influences such as foreigners living in Doha. People have to want to change before they actually do. I hardly believe that Allah wishes to stunt a woman's mind and send her to hell, because she wear jeans and a t-shirt.

All this talk of going to hell and judgement day seems to me to be out of our lane since every holy book mentioned in this thread leaves Judgement to Yahweh/God/Allah. Besides, it isn't wise to cast your convictions on others and to pass judgement on people who do not share your belief system. This is how extremists are born and made and someone who is so extreme that they cannot accept or tolerate someone else's differences is just wrong.

Personally, most of the Arab women I have seen in Doha have changed very little in my observations since 2000. They also seem to adhere to their religious and cultural rules for the most part. There are the random groups that have elected for change, but even these women are hardly scantily dressed. I also would suggest not seeing the changes as a threat to your culture Noori. Your culture in Qatar is evolving, hopefully for the better. There will always be people who adhere to the old ways (there are still bedouins, afterall). Your clothing does not define your culture and the changes you describe hardly seem threatening.

Noor, as someone said before, live and let live. Why does it bother you so much what others want to wear or the way they practise their religion. So much preaching for nothing, take a hard look at your self and judge YOUR actions only.

So noori, are you going to start another thread about how muslim men are forgetting their culture?

Aviduser I wasn't bashing anyones religion, I was simply saying that there is no point in telling me that I am going to burn in hell when I don't believe I will. I find it funny that people think just because they tell me that I'm going to change my beliefs! Religion is only as powerful as the belief people have in it, if nobody believes it has no power.

Islam didn’t ask you to cover your face! It’s the men in your life (father, brother, etc) who force you to do so. For them your face is no different then a sexual organ needs to be covered. If it’s a so called Qatari tradition, how come our first lady isn’t wearing it?

I am from the west. Even when I wasn't practising Islam, I thought it was madness. We grew up poor so to me fashion and McDonald's were not a big deal. All we cared about is if it the clothes were clean and if they fit. A homemade burger was just as good as Mcdonalds.

People didn't care about those things when I was growing up. The world has gotten crazy though in the last twenty years. For the Americans remember cutoff jean shorts do you see them anymore, ohh only rednecks still wear them. Even the West has lost its values to commercialism so don't give me that crap. A lot of younger people from the West can see because they don't remember building guns out of wood sticks and rubberbands. If it is not Nintendo, Sega or Ipod, Gucci, Prada we don't know. The same is happening here in Qatar and around the world.

The lament I think from Noori is not about expressing freedom but the lose of identity and culture. Do you go to Japan and see women in Kimono's anymore? Do you see the women in Africa wearing the pretty dresses with the wonderfully bright colors. Do you see the Arab men in their thobes or different head wraps or scarves depending on the region? If I go to Pakistan will I see people wearing Shalwar/ Qamees. Do the people have to abandon their dress and their culture to become modern?

Stop trying to flip the discussions.

Noori,

Welcome to the world. The media, movies, and television are mmaking everyone homogeneous. If you are modern you have to dress and look the part as stipulated by the people in control of your images.

You are no longer Chinese, Korean, Arab, African, Pakistani, or Indian. You are all Hollywood starlets who are a size two with long flowing hair, blue eyes( or blue contacts), blonde hair. You all speak engrish or english or engarish. You can be the darkest woman on the planet but you wear pasty white makeup and garishly red lipstick. If your hair is curly or nappy you have to straighten it.

The view of modernism is not to make you intelligent or independent but to make you depedent on the makeup, stylists, and all the wonderful products we have to sell you. This is the condition in Qatar and all over the world.... In order to succeed in business/life you have to have one blue suit, and a black one, be six feet tall and look like a cowboy. oh wait thats how we choose presidents and leaders.

Aghhh modern fashion makes no sense to me. Anyone who actually lives and works out in the sun knows that the more skin you expose to the sun the hotter you will be. Its called cover yourself with light airy cloth like cotton or linens not get buck naked. Italian cut suits/shirts and hip hugger jeans are not cute :-) they just make you walk funny.

We shouldnt bash their religion, we don't beleive in it and at the end of the day everyone is welcome to their own views. If that means that you never expose any part of their bodies well good for them, If they want to live their life like that for the hope of entering paradise well go ahead. I certainly hope there is one because imagine the disappointment if it didn't materialise. Man you are gonna be really annoyed.

As there is no proof of any of this heaven, hell paradise or judgement day then I am going to take my chances by drinking eating having sex before marriage and all the other amazing sins that were laid down over 1300 years ago.

After all we have one shot at this life with absoloutly NO guarantee of an afterlife so I'm going for it now just in case.

Now of course if there was any evidence of an afterlife even just a hint of proof then perhaps I could give it all up and make my girlfriend wear the Abaya, I might even wait till I am married to sleep with her again but until then I am sticking with what I know and what I can prove.

I respect religions that don't want to hurt people.

There are people in remote parts of the world who have no knowlege of our religions.

They are also good people who do their best for others and live by codes that are just and good.

Are these people going to hell?

And I’m against NIQAB. It’s not Islamic & unnatural. Name it what you want. It’s a lousy excuse for men to have dominance over women & its complete oppression. It’s not a Qatari tradition (and limited to Qataris from Bedouin/tribal heritage). The Qatari women tradition dress is known for decades to be the ‘abaya ‘& ‘shayla’, elder wear goshwa & batoola to cover their faces.

You should have some more respect many Qatari girls adhere to their religion and are proud to do so. Im a new convert here in Qatar. I wear hijab which I dont do before, though I got beautiful hair as they say ;) I wear long skirt which I wasnt comfortable before... and so on and so on.

My point is it is conviction of the heart and respect for other people's right. You are in an Islamic Country, respect their cultures, and that doesnt mean wearing Hijabs and long skirt, but dress and act properly. If you cant, you have also choices, do and wear everything you want inside your home or live in a place or a country where people will not even bother if you are walking in two- piece.

Changes are happening not only in Qatar, it is everywhere. Bottom line is... respect for yourself and for others.

Peace! :)

At least you didn't disagree that niqab prevents women from being active members of society iwael. I was really referring to ditching the shackles of the culture here, rather than hijab itself. It's a womans choice and if less women are wearing it, then that is good because it means their excercising their freedom of choice.

Just wana say..Arabs have lost there CULTURE...

Most people ask that why GOD send MUHAMMAD(P.B.U.M) as a LAST PROPHET in ARABS...

The reason is clear that.THEY ARE BLIND FROM HEATS.

Westerns introduce there culture and Arabs accept it..do Arabs ever think that Westrens dont even bother about Islamic Culture

I really don't think there is anything shameful about the human body.

So she decided to wear a mini skirt. Big deal. It hardly merits being arrested and challenged by other members of the public.

If everybody started wearing mini skirts its not going to end civilisation as we know it.

How is it shameful to wear a mini-skirt. A girl should be proud of her body, not shamed by it.

Dear Gypsy,

I really appreciate your input to the threads in QL, you surely enrich any discussion BUT I don't agree with you this time.

Hijab doesn't, didn't, and won't stop gorls from particiapting in life nor development. I can see all around me women in Hijab and doing great job. They are great mothers, amazing employees, bright managers, and many other things.

All they are doing by wearing the hijab, is obeying Allah's commands and protecting theirselves from ...... (won't name them).

Their minds are open, educated, and in many times they beat the men in different feilds.

Go girls WITH HIJAB and keep the good work.

I lived in Middle East for 12 years and I think I will miss it.

It looks unique to me and it makes a difference seeing different type of people. if I don't see Arab woman in hijab or Abaya (as we call in Saudi), then were no longer in Middle East! I think that's sad if they change completely. How am I supposed to show my future grandchildren how they dress if they are all into modern dress? just by photos? not enough. something should be preserve. being modern is one thing but to completely change is another thing. Some old things like antiques still looks nice and adorable.

Just keep dancing, it will do you good!

The Last Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.M) said

"When there is no shame in the society. And no one like to stop the bad things. Then there will be a bad time for sure"

one i went to SANA Shoping center with my family.i dont remember which year..but was b4 1998...as we finished shopping..we went to the counter...there i saw an asian girl wearing mini skirt...everyone feel shame to see her in that dress...one arab guy warned her to go from there or change her dress..she didnt even bother about what man was saying...that guy call a police..and police came there and arrest the girl...

so there is so much differene in that time and now...i dont like to call this country a ISLAMIC country now....

impressive well you know technology is getting advanced life is getting advanced every thing. Simpy say this is the ear of Modernisation. you are asking why only females changed no males also changed. Be it East or West its all over the world now. Boys trying to look prettier cute so the girls get impressed with and girls trying to get more more prettier and slim to look perfect.there is alot about it.
