New Crime in Doha
Calling your family backhome is one of the worst crime in qatar. Just wanted to share this news with you all i just read it in Gulf-times.

TWO Bangladeshi friends are up in court after one of them called his relatives using an outlawed computer-to-telephone service.
One of the accused was arrested on February 26 after spending only a matter of days in Qatar.
The court heard that while he was staying at his friend's house he used a pre-paid card to phone his family.
However, according to the Communication Law 34/2006 the cheaper method of calling abroad is a 'misuse' of the country's exclusive communication services – and violators can face a one year jail term as well as a fine of up to QR50,000.
The second defendant, who works for the military, was arrested at his base. In the first week of the trial, the 31 year old denied having “sold” the service to his friend.
A number of shopkeepers have been deported following a crackdown on pre-paid international cards two months ago.
Sources told Gulf Times that a number of others arrested in the Musherib raids were now facing charges.
samaac.. callin home is not a crime.. calling using net to phone is a crime or rather banned here..
how do we find out for sure, all the ins and outs?

i know at least one person who uses a Skype at his office for his business, very respectful man, and very respectful office, at very respectful location.. I am sure he is just not aware of this ridiculous law!!...
I was typing when you posted your message. Surely, it can't be true ?! Even pc-to-pc is not allowed in Qatar?
In Saudi , they tried to get Skype and other IP users by trying to charge them. They could "interpret the packets" to see if IP Telephony was being used and then charge the customer a fixed fee.
Luckily, the government kicked out the idea..
I couldn't believe it first, so I went to the Gulf Times website, and there was the article. But on a serious note, I do actually intend to use Skype, albeit pc-to-pc communication. Hope very much I won't be detained and deported. Any Skype users around who managed to survive so far? I understand though if people will be cautious with their admissions :).

Phone service, labor laws, business laws ..... all are designed to protect Qatari business people ...... God forbid that a Qatari company should actually have to compete fairly in an open market
Supernurse, as far as I am aware, Skype is illegal in Qatar, but I don't believe that there has been any effort to track down users. Far easier to monitor the local shops where the lowest paid workers in the country go to contact their loved ones as they generally don't have access to a home PC. Pathetic, isn't it?

I have no one to call outside, but i can feel for those people who got nothing to communicate with their families but the phone lines. They want to stop that? Maybe they should consider the calls rate which is really very high compared with other Telecommunication Companies ...

That why my company restrict all this kind of services from our computers. simply they don't want to be responsible for us :(
skype - you are in a hot soup if they catch you
i think its illegal when the calls are from "pc to phone".
Skype can also be used to call pc to pc.
am not 100% sure of this, but the above article do stress that they made a "pc to phone" call.

i understand that calloing booths like bengalis have here are illegal but i am not sure whats the countrys law on calling cards like yahoo and msn phone services from messengers

i was once told that there's a department in Qtel where their function is to track down calls/numbers..specially illegal calls using programmed sim cards and phone cards..
so be inform..

Anyway, I think this law is stupid, howeer it'll fail once Vodafone is open because there can't be an exclusive communications law for Qtel :)

yes. but police warned all of them to stop this service 2 days before the raids. Obviously they didn't listen :(
