In no particular order and excluding a ton I don't recall at the time;
-The outlaw Josey Wales
-The 5th Element
-Two Mules for Sister Sarah
-Lock, Stock, etc.,
-Where Eagles Dare
-The Great Escape
-Rio Bravo
-Invincibles
-Cars
-Dirty Dozen
-Kill Bill 1 & 2
-Kelly's Heroes
Good lists, guys...keep it up. This thread is a great idea for sharing. There are tons of movies on other folks lists that I love but have forgotten about.
They way these guys plan & sword-fights in braveheart was of a much higher standard, and of course the dialouges.
The casting was not realistic especially the persian king & the Black Messenger!!! They looked more like from a heavy-metal band. Also if there was so much arrows shot so as to darken the sun then the spartans should have been sorrounded by arrows. But this is not reflected & how they over come it.
The action secquence I liked was the slow-motion fight. And the jump to cut off that guys hand. The only line I liked in 300 was - "my hand"..."its not yours now..is it?" or something to that effect.
In 300 they have used Luster Colour-grading to give the film a comic book tone. They have used 3D extensively. The wolf was 3D, so also the Girl swaying (as if in water) in the transparent costume was also 3D creaed mostly by Maya, also much of the landscape was also computer generated.
For those of you that like "Lock, Stock..." and "Snatch," I strongly reccommend a movie called "Boondock Saints." It is one of my favorite movies of all time.
"300" was good, watch it for Hollywood value though, not historical value. "Braveheart" and "Gladiator" were also amazing movies if you like the violent epic-type films.
For crime/action, I recommend "Seven," "Scarface," "Heat," or "Pulp Fiction."

C4 993 Driver - Thanks for ur brief reviews. Quite insightful and on target. I hope you continue posting since it seems like you're quite informed on the subject! I'm an active member of the Screen Actor's Guild, so next time I get my ballot, I'll have to ask your feedback before voting ;)
"300" was absolutely brilliant - not your common Hollywood fare, which is always good. The wonderful thing about it was the way it had that look of a comic book - loved the little details, like how they inserted the shots of the characters' shadows in the middle of a scene. It always amazes me that Big Studios still put out a bit of creative innovation every now and then ;o)
Shavonne!!! Thank you for the list! It would read almost exactly like mine, except that I might also add "Snatch", "Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels", and "The Professional".
sl - another fantastic biopic....interesting how there were two this year that really stood out...Both The Queen and The Last King of Scotland (two "royalty" films too) were unusually good, well acted and tight with the story. Both Mirren and Whitaker morphed into their characters.
I actually think Mirren had the more difficult job, as she was doing a story on a living person...in her own country. A very risky move on all involved with the movie.
If you like sci-fi/suspense movies, I just saw an entertaining one...Deju Vu, starring Denzel Washington and Jim Caviesel (who played Jesus in The Passion of the Christ), et al. It was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, who is normally associated with action movie schlock, but, this movie actually came together rather nicely. I was ready to turn it off after 30 mins because I thought it was getting a bit too cheesy...but I thought I'd hang on due to the actors. I'm glad I did. Definitely a good popcorn and soda movie (and actually a good "date movie" too)
Yes, sl you're correct...thanks for the clarification on the regional codes!
Last King of Scotland was absolutely brilliant. Forrest Whitaker has done such a wonderful job with his career and his acting. I can first remember him as the (almost) hapless Jeep Driver in Good Morning Vietnam. I think his most impacting role (or at least the most impressionable) prior to LKoS, was his role in The Crying Game.
Concur with Shavonne...I absolutely howled at Little Miss Sunshine. My first mistake was watching it on an international flight. Thankfully, I could excuse myself and laugh out loud in a remote part of the plane!
Although it's an extremely funny, the heart of the movie is actually a tragedy (in the classical sense). I found the script and the story extremely tight, the acting brilliant and consistent, the character development sound, the denouement perfect. Again, another example of astute agents and actors supporting an indie film.
Although Babel was an Oscar nominee, the movie just tried way too hard. It didn't have the subtleties and intrigue of another movie in which Brad Pitt starred (a Robert Redford acted and directed movie) called Spy Games. It received critical acclaim, but not necessarily popular support because it's edgy, complex, and less obvious. In fact, up until Mr & Mrs Smith, Brad Pitt (and his agent) had done an excellent job of seeking out obscure scripts and making them almost cult followings (Fight Club, anyone?).
Babel was entirely too obvious, stereotypical and too reminiscent of something Steven Soderburg would have done ten years ago. I found it OK, but only OK.
certian DVD payers can be adjested to Multi Region.you can play any of different regions with these player. Mine has been adjusted by the slaes person of the show room.
watch Last King of Scotland. good movie about Idi Amin days.
DVD/Movie sharing is a good idea. Something to keep in mind is that most DVDs have region codes, which can't be played on certain DVDs. For example, a DVD purchased in the US cannot be played on a DVD player purchased in the Middle East.
My 2 QRs re: 300...artistic, excellent and, although artistic license was used for character embellishment, the story was true to the original Battle of Thermopoli. Yes, it was violent, but it was in the appropriate context. It wasn't gratuitous, it clearly shows the passion and disciplines of the Spartans (true to history) and the excesses of Xerxes (again, true to history)....NOT for children.
Alexander, although mildly entertaining due to the scenery and costumes, had all the intrigue of Kevin Costner in Robin Hood.
But, isn't that what's so great about movies? One person's Dr Zhivago is another person's South Park: Team America!
Yes it is available. But I no longer rent DVD's. I give list of what I want for a particular guy and he gives me a copy next day for me to keep forever. cost same as the rental rate a day.
If u want I can make a copy of 300 for u. This is violence at its best.

Computers have lots of memory but no imagination.
One of the things I liked about 300 was that it wasn't really trying to be a historical documentary. It was a stylized account. I liked the style.
I liked Braveheart as well but it falls down in that, while it looked more authentic, it was just as flawed historically.
Shavonne...awesome list. Very eclectic tastes.
In action I would put Braveheart before 300.
They way these guys plan & sword-fights in braveheart was of a much higher standard, and of course the dialouges.
