New Irish bar in Sheraton

Tsardoz
By Tsardoz

I met a Kiwi guy at the airport whose job was to install bars around the world but mainly the Middle East. He was in Doha setting up a new Irish Bar in the Sheraton basement. He said it would be opening just after Ramadan. He also thought that there would be many more bars opening here in the next few years as the population takes off.

As for Amigos my good sources tell me that the hotels here ganged up on it as they were losing a lot of trade and money to the new place. So pressure was put on the sponsor to shut it down under the guise of lots of unislamic practises were occuring. Well apart from drinking alcohol I didn't see much there and as usual it comes down to money. Forced out of busines for taking too much business from other people....

Cause it was the best bar by far and got closed for being to successful and allowing expats a good time. It was pleasantly between the Cube and the pearl (one bing expensive and full of fat blokes, the other being cheaper than a students union and full of skinny types) - yes i am rather fickle. You could even take your mother there!!!!

I wasnt referring to its patrons but the manager. see my git explanation above and use of its context "poor git". i.e., didnt see that one coming

WHat story about it closing is true

1) Somebody was raped

2) Guns were found and shotting nearby

3) Somebody was stabbed inside

4) There was a knocking shop upstairs

5) There werent planning to build the Al-Dana hotel so the bar license got scrapped

Any other rumours

I think I shall now GIT back to work on packing as I have done nothing except lie in the pool this morning avoiding all the stuff left to pack in boxes...nothing like avoidance..

Yep doggie is a cow or cattle..

I think I need an "English" lesson...

Tsdaroz...I went to Oz by myself a few years back cause I wanted to travel overseas alone and figured at least they speak english there..hmm..didn't take long to figure out I needed a translator at times...lol Most of the folks were having one heck of a good time with my misunderstandings..and looks of confusion with the slang you guys use....but I had one heck of a great time! Oz ROCKS!!!

Git is British slang for a stupid or unpleasant person.

But a doggy is a cow?

(I always wondered why li'l doggies had to git along)

But why should us gits remember amigos?

A "git" is another UK term that you dont know like the "yob"..... a git is bascially a rather unpleasant character that one doesnt like for whatever reason - typically they are tight, unreasonable or have crossed you in the past. However in my context i wasn't using anu of these but referring to a person who unwittingly got done over by the powers at be.

How about "plonker" do you kow that one? i think that describes our mutual friend form friday quire well who dragged you through the dirt with our glourish yob culutre we have back home.

Back to work....

a "git" As far as I know it we only use it to mean move on...such as Git along little doggie...(doggie being a cow)

Rydges is owned by Sheikh Faisal (Uncle of the Emir). He also owns City Center and a lot of other property in Doha. If you go to Rydges Plaza Offices (entrance on the other side of the building from the main hotel entrance) you will see the new development model.

I know what I have written above is true because I have done business with Faisal Holdings who own Rydges and have seen the new plans for the Ministry of the Interior building. Like it or not, its going to happen so enjoy Rydges while it lasts.

That assumes the guys from the ministries are not the ones who also like to drink!!!!!! I was in the chinese atr the Oasis recently and it was full of locals/Saudis getting full of lager.....

Ridges rumor has been around for years. i hearsd from the GM about 1.5 years ago no such thing was happening but TIQ.....

I wonder what could be the reason for closure of the Hotel altogether. Just cos the Ministry of Interior building is being re-built isn't a good enough reason to move into a well to do Hotel. Who owns the Rydges any idea?

If they are deliberately moving for the reason that I had stated as above, then it means that the guys from the Ministries are allowed to overlook into the Emir's office but not guys like to drink and party! LOL

Also losing the rugby club in a year's time.

I was told when it was built it was on the edge of town?

Now it is prime building land so they have to relocate.

They are worried they will lose their licence. Also swimming pool etc.

Rydges hotel and bar will close and the building will be occupied as offices by the Ministry of Interior for about two years until their new building on the Corniche is completed. At that time, the whole Rydges building will be razed to the ground and a new office complex will be built.

I am not sure when Rydges will close but I believe it will be in the next few months.

FWIW Kiwi fruit = "New Zealand fruit" based on same use of Kiwi = New Zealand. The bird is their national symbol.

Sorry about my slang Scarlett!

Losing Rydges? Oh no! What's the story?!

Never really been a fan of Irish bars myself but it is sounding pretty good to me now! Pity I won't be here for the opening ... (be in Australia for a month or so after Ramadan).

Thanks for the insider info Tsardoz!

Scarlett : Kiwi is pretty normal to understand for any person who's into Cricket (or other sports too). I believe its more to do with Kiwi the bird not the fruit.

Richard : Whats with Rydges, any further info on why Rydges is gonna close down? I've been hearing forever that the top two floors of Rydges would be closed down as they directly look into the Emir's office.

Having an Irish bar will put Doha officially on the world map. I knew Russia had arrived when I arrived at the airport in Moscow in 1993 and the first thing I saw was an Irish bar.

I think your Kiwi pal is right, there are a lot of new bars opening here over the next year. Life in Doha is getting better even though we are goint to lose Rydges. Boo Hoo!
