Pakistan Floods 'Worse than Tsunami'

FLOODS in Pakistan have affected more people than the combined total of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

Figures released by the United Nations yesterday reveal the tragedy has affected 13.8million people.

The number killed by the floods is 1,600 – fewer than the death toll for the worst three disasters this decade.

But two million more are suffering from hunger or homelessness.

Maurizio Giuliano, spokesman for the UN Office for the Co-Ordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said: “The magnitude of the tragedy is so immense it is hard to assess.” Rescue workers were yesterday struggling to reach more than a million people still cut off by landslides.

Victims are gathering in makeshift camps where the threat of disease is high.

One of them, Manzoor Ahmed, from the town of Shikarpur in Sindh province, said: “It would have been better if we had died in the floods as our life here is more painful.”

The Disasters Emergency Committee said yesterday that aid from its member charities had reached more than 500,000 people and the UK public had raised £6million.

Humans are indeed helpless against mother nature, but It is the role of government to mitigate these risks and help the people. This seems not to have happened.

The Almighty's wisdom in why such calamities befall. What we as people alive and in better positions than those affected can do is extend our help in whatever way we can..even by dua if nothing else. And bare in mind the saying of the Prophet " Know that if the Nation were to gather together to benefit you with anything, it would benefit you only with something that Allah had already prescribed for you, and that if they gather together to harm you with anything, they would harm you only with something Allah had already prescribed for you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried."

The words of Manzoor Ahmed is heart wrenching..I seek refuge in Allah from such calamities..Aameen!

No donations.

Hopefully this will flush out all the terrorists.

If you accept your position as the new axis of evil, and refuse to do anything about harbouring the least human lifeforms within your borders, then don't come crying for help.

Help this country get back on its feet so it can continue being the centre of all the terror?

No thanks.

federal gov. is inactive, but provincial govt. is doing well so far... its not only govt's duty to overcome the calamities/damages... personnal effort required to re-build the country...

Some difficulties are a part of the Law of Nature. Illness finds its way in... one way or the other... accidents do take place and the inevitable is bound to happen... man cannot escape them. Seek God's protection and help in such a situation...
