Pampered and Bored Expat Children ?

May he rest in peace, but are they pampered and bored in a sterile environment ?

Bored to death in Dubai: After a 15-year-old plunges to his death, how pampered expat children are rebelling against stultifyingly sterile lives with booze and gas-sniffing

Like many teenagers, 16-year-old Ben has hundreds of contacts listed in the directory of his smartphone.
As he scrolls through them, however, one particular entry stands out.

It reads ‘Milkman’, and is important enough to have been assigned its own speed-dial key.
The contact isn’t actually a milkman, though he does make regular bottled deliveries to the streets around the affluent, manicured communities favoured by the expatriates of Dubai, where Ben, a British schoolboy, has lived with his parents for the past five years.

He fell to his death this week after an alcohol-fuelled night. 'A lot of his friends are in shock but also really scared,' said Ben, who was in the same social circles
The contents of Milkman’s van are rather more potent than dairy products, however.
He provides bootleg alcohol to under-age drinkers, particularly on Thursdays and Fridays, the nights which constitute the Arab weekend.
‘That’s when the big parties happen and we need to stock up. We call this guy and he sells us cheap booze out of the back of his car,’ Ben says.

Very sad loss of a life.

The answer is severe punishment for this milkman and all deal these illegal drugs to children.

Then parents must take notice and take responsibility for their children. Had these parents been more involved, they might have noticed his behavior and taken action.

Very sad. Parents come for the money but there is little for the kids to do. Qatar to have a healthy society needs more families and more for children to do.

BE, I have heard such things about here too. Can't comment upon that gas thing, doubt they would have picked that up from their parents. Not enough for them to do here.

Nothing to do with being pampered...back home, going to the pub at 15 is a right of passage, and there are plenty of fights and incidents with unpampered kids...in this part of the world, they have to make the best and frankly, who can blame them. In London, the 'Milkman' would be delivering products FAR worse than alcohol!!!

What about the use of drugs to alleviate boredom. Is that common too? My kids grew up in the Gulf and didn't resort to such things.

Is it more common than we like to believe ?

Pampered maybe, bored almost certainly. Very common comment about Qatar too, dull place for teenagers
