The Peninsula relaunched

This morning's Peninsula has been redesigned. The business section is syndicated from the Financial Times, and there's a new supplement called Oasis.

My favourite bit is the TV guide, which I helped with. Last year, I got very annoyed with the poor quality of newspaper's TV guide, and I think the Peninsula's guide is now pretty close to fabulous.

What do you all think about the new Peninsula?

Honestly the new Peninsula frontpage looks awful, but the inside pages look better. Still, Gulf Times and Tribune look way better and comfortable to read.

The Peninsula also did some tweaking of the source. Here are the two stories:

Peninsula

AFP

Peninsula: "She did not give details on their legal status in Qatar, but Bin Laden’s son, who holds a Saudi passport, should normally have the right to live in any of the six Gulf Cooperation Council states, being a citizen of a member state."

AFP: "Bin Laden's son Omar -- who holds a Saudi passport -- should normally have the right to live in any of the six Gulf Cooperation Council states, being a citizen of a member state."

Five more paragraphs were cut from the end, but I could believe that was to fit the article into the page:

Omar is the fourth child from Osama bin Laden's first marriage. His 52-year-old wife -- whom he married in 2007 -- is a British citizen who changed her name from Jane Felix-Browne.

Omar says he has not spoken to his father since 2000, when he decided to leave a training camp in Afghanistan with Osama bin Laden's consent.

The couple, who met while horse riding, set up the "Al-Mirage" horse ranch just outside Cairo after Britain in April rejected a residence application because his presence might cause "considerable public concern."

Zaina hopes they will be able to travel to Britain in early 2009.

"Our British visa should be through in two month and a half," she said.

Interesting WB. The way I see it, when you source something I think it's as bad to not include all the information (or at least not acknowledge that some has been excluded) as it is to not cite your source.

Both Peninsula and Gulf Times covered the story. I honestly thought at least one of them wouldn't, but I was wrong.

I also like the game of comparing the agency source to the local story. You can often get a good idea of what journalists deem too sensitive to write by seeing which bits have gone missing from Reuters or AP stories.

Compare these:

Gulf Times

Reuters

Three paragraphs have been cut:

"Airport sources in Egypt said Omar bin Laden, who has not seen the al Qaeda leader for many years and says he does not support violence, had asked to go to Qatar, where as a Saudi citizen he would have right of entry."

"The British authorities have denied Omar bin Laden a visa and the Spanish interior ministry rejected his asylum plea on the grounds that it did not consider he was in danger in Egypt."

"Omar bin Laden has lodged another request for a British visa, but this will not be considered until February 2009, his wife said. (Writing by Jonathan Wright; additional reporting by Firouz Sedarat in Dubai; editing by Elizabeth Piper)"

Fair play, the story's in both papers.

Kudos to Gulf Times for not using the word 'deported', but their story was a bit light compared to the Penisula's version. It basically looks like someone watched Al Jazeera's report and just jotted down the details!

Hey, perhaps we can start a new game - each day we pick a story which should appear in the following day's papers and then decide whose report on it is the best, Gulf Times or Peninsula (I'm not including Tribune since they still don't have a website - now that's 1980s!).

Great minds WB! I was thinking exactly the same re: Omar Bin Laden and the Qatar newspapers.

The local papers certainly need to be redesigned, but lets not forget what they're for: reporting the news.

Tomorrow morning, let's see which of the local newspapers have covered Omar Bin Laden being deported to Qatar. It's on all the wires, and it's well before any of their deadlines. There's no excuse for not covering the story.

Of course, it'll be even more embarrassing if Jazeera doesn't cover the story, as they decided his Spanish asylum attempt was worthy of two stories. Of course, nothing is guaranteed at Jazeera nowadays.

the Peninsula new look is a lot different from the usual newspaper design that we have in Qatar. makes it stand out from the rest of the crowd.

definately fresher although I need to feel the dead tree in my hand before I pass final judgement.

The one thing I'm not to keen on is the font - I'm more of a Helvetica kinda guy.
