I use to have a Doberman, I had him school train and it was a wonderful animal. Good guardian, loyal and obedient. I will never forget him. Lots of fun, excellent playful companion. He died after 16 years of service. I did cry like a baby. Never again will have another pet. He was part of the family and he went everywhere we went.

Trust me, if you get a cat or a dog you will never forget about feeding them: They will constantly remind you, loudly! Dogs seem to be always hungry...

It's not a big deal, it takes two minutes to feed a pet: open can, pour contents into feeding bowl, halas...! I get lazy when it comes to comb their hair and bath them...but hey, there is no gain without a little pain.

I watched it on tv...Couldn't go to see it live, and boy do I regret it now! But it's not so easy, you know, with a small baby...

I loved it, I thougth it was looking pretty amazing on TV.

By the way, I've started to work already...I'm loving it, but Heidi is having a hard time adjusting to nursery! I don't know how to make it easier for her...any ideas?

hmm makes sense.i dont know if i can love a pet in that way...maybe bcos i have had the chance to do so...but then i can be a lazy person...i cant take care of my plants.........i forget...can u believe it...i just forget i am supposed to water them and its not nice....my dad's taken responsibilty for the plants....so its cool.when on vacation he has to remind me to water them......i am that bad.i guess its individual passions.

Nothing compares to the joy of having children, not even having a pet. It's just a different kind of love...for your children you would do anything, you would die for them, you would sacrifice your time and your money for them, your children become your priority over everything else in life... Of course that's not the case with pets, that doesn't mean that you don't love them or that having one is not a joy, it's just...well you cannot compare having a child with having a pet!

I guess some people prefer pets to kids just becuase they don't want kids in the first place, or the life-lasting responsability that comes with that child...so a pet becomes "the baby that they don't want to have" without the "hassle"

The only thing that matches the joy of having a pet is the joy of having a child. Still, it's a different kind of joy. I've had my dog for a year and a half and coming to Doha without him wasn't even an option. My dog can be a pain--especially when he chews my baby's bottle nipples and pacifiers, or when he wants to play with our socks--but he makes me laugh all the time. This morning when I opened the patio door, he charged outside, only to be bounced back by the screen door that wasn't quite open. The befuddled look on his face was priceless! Our dog sleeps with us and sometimes we'll wake up with him sleeping on his back, with all four paws in the air. So cute!

thats so sweet what you put! your dog sounds amazing!! Han i have two male dogs out here and i cannot describe the joy they give me!!! Can you imagine how amazing it is everytime you come home and theres two babies with huge waggy tails so happy to see you!! They make me laugh so much they have the most amazing personality and the cutest habits! My white dog for instance likes to get mouthfulls of mud and spit it all over the floors especially when its just been cleaned! he so sweet when he lifts his leg and asks for a belly run! My collie just follows his mummy everywhere hes so intelligent he knows my daily routine so well hes just so clever! As soon as they wake up there licking us and wagging there tails! There amazing! i think any home without some form of pets is a shame! pets bring such joy and happiness to your life ( and yes sadness and anger too). The only sad things is for every dog/cat which has a safe and loving home theres probably about a hundred which desperalty need/want a home.

Hi han,

I have had pets all my life…well cats and dogs only. I can’t see myself loving a fish! Pets make wonderful companions, but before having one you have to make sure that his/her personality matches yours!

Right now I have no dog and feel like something is missing in my life, that’s how attached you become to having a pet…I gave my mother my dog called Talkien because here in Doha he would suffer so much and back at my mum’s he has lots of forest to run. I can tell you why I love him and that’s because he is very loyal to me and my mother and have such a willingness to please. Last summer I spent four months in Spain and Talkien was really good looking after my baby as well! For some reason he kept an eye on her All the time, really protective, sleeping in her bedroom when she was sleeping and looking for me the minute she would wake up and cry and at that time Heidi was taking her first steps and he would become very anxious when she was wandering too far from me in the garden and would push her back to me, it was really funny to watch! He would also play really gently with her, it was so sweet, because when he plays with me he’s such a brut!

I think that’s what makes pets so special, they are just part of the family.

:( I feeling sad now, Talkien I miss you sooooo much…!!!!

Talkien is a schnauzer, these breed are characterised for being very alert and intelligent

Han19,

I should also say that if you decide to become a pet owner be prepared to have your heart broken. I cannot tell you how much enjoyment and comfort having pets has given me. On the other hand I cannot tell you how utterly devestated I was when faced with having to have my cat put down.

As part of the family they are there day in and day out and when they are not there they leave a gapping whole.

As with everything in life you need to tale the sour with the sweet.

i always wanted to have those small aquariums(is that whats its called...fish tanks with fish)....but i am scared i will kill the fish by forgetting to feed it.

i have had only one experiecne with a kitten in india a few years ago, that some crows were trying to take away...a new born kitten.....i got it into my home tried to feed it...since i was clueless about what to do...the next day it died.it was week and cold so i did the best by wrapping it in a blanket...but it wud not eat or drink. the only good thing we did was give it a nice burial the next day and for some reason my mom and us sisters got emotionally attached to it in 24hours.it was really sad.after that incident if i see any such tiny babies...i give it someone who know what to do with them.

If you have never had pets I suspect that it is difficult to understand the obsession of others.

As a child and as an adult I have always had cats and in my home they rule the roost. They can be messy, noisy, can destroy the leather sofa in a matter of days yet I would not want to be without them.

They are company and as strange as it may sound they are very tuned in to how you are feeling. The most unsociable cat with not leave your side when you are ill and will give you a much needed cuddle when you are blue.

They fill the house with laughter when they inevitably fall in the bath, as my kitten did the other day while I was having a shower, or when they loose purchase and slide across the tiled floor while chasing a ball.

You get a warm fuzzy feeling when you see them stretched out living a life to be envied by humans. To some dogs are a mans best friend, to other it may be a cat, to a child a goldfish won at the carnival. No matter what animal or at what stage in your life and animal is a friend and a part of the family.

I would agree that a visit to QAWS may help. You will see that people give time, energy and money to help support animals that have been abandoned by us, humans. If you cannot commit to look after one animal lomg term perhaps you can find another way to help!
