Doha, Jun3 16 (QNA) - H.E. the Minister of Public Health and Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Health, Abdullah Bin Khalid Al Qahtani said Tuesday that the first two influenza A H1N1 cases had been diagnosed in Qatar.

The first was a two-year old child from New Zealand who arrived in Doha, with the company of two members of his family who are residing in Qatar, last Saturday on Emirates airlines flight no 843 coming from Dubai. He was diagnosed with H1N1 early Tuesday after symptoms of the flu appeared two days after his arrival in Doha and he was admitted to the local pediatric emergency center at Al Sadd in Doha. The minister said the child and his family were given antidodes and he was now recovering.

The second case was a two- and -a- half- year old US child of Bangladeshi origin coming from New York.He arrived on Sunday and was transiting in Doha ,accompanied by four family members. He was also diagnosed with H1N1 by Hamad Medical hospital after he suffered from related symptoms upon arrival and was seen by doctors at the airport clinic. The child and members of his family have received antidotes and have been isolated. He is now recovering, the minister explained.

A team from the ministry of health had been sent to ensure that all who had contacts with those diagnosed had not contracted the influenza.

The Supreme Council for Health urged that all those who arrived on Qatar Airways flight no 084 from New York on Sunday 14 June 2009 and those who arrived aboard the Emriates Airlines flight no 843 on Saturday 13 June 2009 from Dubai to rush to any health centre or to Hamad General Hospital if they felt symptoms of Influenza A or H1N1 such as high fever or any respiratory inflammation or coughing.

Having announced the discovery of the first two cases of the influenza in Qatar, the Supreme Council for Health confirmed that the health sector and the medical cadres in the country are fully pepared and that all procedures had been taken to diagnose and treat such cases if discovered.(QNA) M T Z

The Qatar Supreme Council for Health, as well as the World Health Organization and Center for Disease Control, USA are working together to identify the pattern of infection and to develop effective vaccines for the benefit of everyone’s health and well being. There are outbreaks of new variations in Australia and other Southern Hemisphere countries . See my previous post: http://www.qatarliving.com/node/580756. Fierce Biotech Newsletter, published yesterday, 29 June 2009. This is the first major flu pandemic since the Avian flu pandemic. With so much international travel, these viruses travel quickly also. “The rising volume of cases is likely to fuel the debate over the need for a national vaccination campaign this fall. Manufacturers and agencies (in the US) are readying 600 million doses of new vaccine in development--enough to protect the entire population. And the first 60 million doses may be available for use in September(2009).”

Believe me when I say the health authorities are working together for our good.

modo- The A(H1N1) virus is not airborne. It can only be transmitted by ‘droplet contact or a Respiratory Route’.

The flu virus must enter into the mucus membrane before one can be infected by the virus. That is why, we advise everyone to refrain from touching their eyes, nose and mouth with their hands.

Yes we have to take care, but not to scared.

Swine flu is like the normal flu that we get all the year.. but the problem is that in the beginning they didn't realise this, and that's why people got scared.

Calm down and be sure that what so ever allah planned to happen to us.. it will happen.. so don't be so scared.

May God be with us all.

Three swine flu cases in Qatar

Web posted at: 6/17/2009 4:11:31

Source ::: The PENINSULA / BY MOHAMMED IQBAL

DOHA: The Supreme Council of Health yesterday announced three confirmed cases of swine flu in Qatar, in the first incidence of the disease in the country.

The first case tested positive for the H1N1 virus was a two-year old boy from New Zealand who came to Doha from Melbourne in Australia last Saturday to join his parents here. The second victim was a two-and-a-half year old American boy of Bangladeshi origin who was transiting through Doha on a Qatar Airways flight on his way from New York to Bangladesh.

In the third incident, a 17-year old Iraqi university student based in Doha who returned from a trip to Washington last Saturday was tested positive for the virus.

All the three cases were officially confirmed by the Minister of Heath H E Abdullah bin Khalid Al Qahtani yesterday.

The boy in transit has been quarantined at the Hamad Medical City while the other two patients are being treated at their homes, senior Council officials disclosed at a press conference held on short notice yesterday afternoon. They confirmed that none of the cases was serious.

The Council, meanwhile, denied rumours circulating through SMS yesterday that an employee of an international restaurant group in Doha was diagnosed with swine flu. The Council said that rumours regarding the closure of the food outlet was also not true. “The Supreme Council of Health is the only body that is responsible for announcing the discovery of H1N1 infections in Qatar,” said the Council in a statement

issued yesterday.

It also urged the public not to believe in such rumours and seek the correct information from the right sources. Dr Abdul Wahab Al Musleh, Director of the Emergency Department at the Hamad Medical Corporation, said in all the three cases, the infection was confirmed after elaborate tests conducted at the airport clinic and various HMC facilities dedicated for the purpose. The boy in transit was tested at the airport clinic following high fever. THE PENINSULA
